It's time to get away from the cloud subscription model for your security cameras so let's take a look the options out there for storing your recordings locally. Starting with the Reolink ecosystem in this video, I'll show you around the Reolink Argus 4 Pro that has been kindly supplied to me by Reolink for review. We'll also take a good look at the Reolink app and their vast array of other products.

Can't wait for Reolink's battery doorbell coming any week now. Ring's going straight in the bin

Yeah that’ll be interesting to see. I prefer hard wired doorbells personally but I know a lot of people who rely on battery powered ones.

Interesting video. I've literally just bought Eufy kit to replace my Ring and Blink cameras. Not cheap, but now it's all under my control and no nasty surprises with subscriptions. 😁

I have some Eufy kit too which I'll be reviewing later in the year. Not impressed with the app usability though with Eufy as my first impressions.

thanks for the open and honest review, this looks to be a good capable camera. I have my doubts about the home hub though as it stores the images on micro/SD cards. These are not ideal for high read/write volume systems. Probably lower update volume than in say a HA server, but there’s been plenty of people that have been bitten by their Raspberry Pi SD card failing.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
You can get more hard wearing SD cards, and I imagine these are only event based recordings anyway. I would expect the life span of the cards to be more than one used in a dash cam anyway and I’ve only ever had one of those fail in a decade or so of owning them. The cameras tend to store on SD cards too so at least it’s no worse than that. The Eufy hub stores on 2.5” drives and I’ll be reviewing that this year too. Not convinced on Eufy’s app yet though!

Ring is Amazon and Amazon are not your friend. I have blink cameras but the original not the subscription model. It’s only a matter of time before they drop support for it at which time it goes in the bin. Amazon cut support for the Alexa to landline box entirely and bricked it. No compensation, just a warning and then poof it’s gone. It wasn’t a subscription it was an out right purchase.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech

I'd never even heard of that landline box!

Have just started my switch from Ring to Reolink for same reasons! Reolink wifi doorbell and E1 zoom are in, next up is Floodlight. You didn't mention the HA Reolink integration, how come?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 24 дня назад
I don't currently have a wired Reolink camera to test the HA integration with - the default integration doesn't work with the battery cameras (certainly not the new Argus 4 Pro anyway). I did make reference to using Neolink to bridge the gap, but it's a bad idea because it drains the battery in hours. Hopefully I'll have some more kit to try out soon and I can report on the functionality that I currently can't use.

Eufy are excellent no sub needed , comes with its own storage which is huge , easy to add all sorts on at any time .

How do you find the app interface for scrolling through events? I find it really awkward to get to the one I'm after because there's no quick preview of them.
@pmbpmb5416
@pmbpmb5416 26 дней назад
I’m assuming the presentation is the same for all their devices , I get thumbnails for each day , timed and can see events quickly , it defines human or otherwise ,they are small but sufficient. The one issue I have on a single device for some reason the notification, which is instant on my other devices , comes up slightly delayed , not got to the bottom of why that is .

What's the difference in video encoding between the two? I would imagine that Ring would be lower bps given that their default option is to store it in the cloud?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
Just had a look at a few clips from both cameras for you. The Ring Spotlight clips are 1920x1080 24fps at an average of about 1.2Mbps. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is 5120x1440 14fps at about 3Mbps. Both are variable bitrates though depending on motion. Showing the same areas on both cameras and the Reolink is a lot clearer (because of higher resolution I guess), but generally the images are less compressed-looking too. I think I show a close up comparison of my cat going in the cat-flap in the video.

@SpeakToTheGeekTech Thanks, good to know and makes even more sense to replace Ring then. Will be interested to see what you make of the hub and if it can upload to cloud and have remote access...

Could you reuse the ring solar panel? Is it the same connector?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
Good question! I'm not sure. So my old Ring solar panel is a barrel connection but the new Ring cameras use USB-C so Ring sent me an adapter when the camera was last swapped under warranty. In theory, the newer solar panels or the old ones with the adapter would fit, but both the Ring and the Reolink cameras have chunky extra plastic around the connector to make it water tight. Those don't look the same size so I don't think it's worth risking it not being water tight by swapping the panels.

Wouldn't it be good to use the Synology Surveillance station on your NAS to record your videos?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 25 дней назад
You’re going to spoil a future video by saying that :) yes that’s an option but one that would only work with battery Reolink cams when you get the hub. Hard wired Reolink cams will support this already though. You just have to pay for the Surveillance Station licenses if you want more than a certain number of cameras connected. My NAS only supports two for free.
@gerbenwolsink3239
@gerbenwolsink3239 25 дней назад
Sorry for that. But I'rader pay Synology to store data local than a subscription at yet an other online service.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 25 дней назад
Totally! Surveillance Station is great, I've used it for an old RTSP camera for a while which I've recently replaced. It's an option if you like that interface and want full local control, blocking your cameras from the internet totally. However it would be an extra expense especially for those who do not already have a NAS (I'm told those people exist). The user interface for the Surveillance Station app needs a bit of work in my opinion, but having a full web interface for it is great.

I have the reolink doorbell it's a great camera but a crap doorbell. You just get a basic notification if someone presses the button. All the other doorbells actually have a calling feature so your phone rings and you can answer. The notification is not enough to be useful, also you need to go into the app and press a button to talk to the visitor, they may have walked off by the time you do this if you actually noticed the notification.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
To be fair my Ring doorbell works the same way! You tap the notification and have to press and button in the app to start talking so even if it works the same way as that I’d be happy.

@@SpeakToTheGeekTech my last doorbell rang like WhatsApp does when someone video calls, most of the other brands also seem to do this. Dahua and hikvision do for sure

That camera is an interesting product but I think you came to a similar conclusion to me at the end but didn’t say it. It’s probably not the right camera for that spot and you’d probably have been better off coving that area with 2 separate cameras with traditional field of views.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 22 дня назад
Correct, yes - it's too close to the house. But, the shed that it's on is falling apart and I'll be getting rid of it later this year. I'll put the camera on the fence instead covering the same area but from further away and it should be perfect.

What's the difference between the home hub and their NVRs?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
Until it's released I won't know for certain, but I would guess that NVRs are aimed at Pro users / businesses, whereas the home hub is for standard consumers. It is definitely physically smaller for a start.
@mastweiler22
@mastweiler22 26 дней назад
Hopefully quieter, the NVR is a bit of a screamer, until you swap out the fans. Alas multiple HDDs create a bit of heat. Also I don't believe the NVR will talk to battery cameras, due to the battery life problem. Personally I prefer PoE Reolink cameras, but I'm old fashioned 😂
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 26 дней назад
I’ve found the specs, it’s SD card storage so should be silent! The battery cams are great for places where I have no wired network or power like my shed. If I could put a wired camera in there I would but sometimes it’s just not feasible

Well that’s not a secret, they sent me the camera to review and I said as much up front. Reolink do not have control over what I chose to say in this video though. I couldn’t afford to buy all the products to review in the videos so rely on vendors sending them. I’m sure they hope the review will be favourable, and indeed I tend to choose products that I will probably like and turn down those i don’t like the look of.
