@@technithusiast Cause steps are not all there. Where does the TCP port 40870 come from? You took the rtsp link from Scrypted and used it in the Generic Camera integration, but you changed with the IP of the doorbell. I got my doorbell IP, tried the TCP port from Scrypted then the TCP port you used in your link, but cannot connect with the integration. I think the prob is 2FA. I don't get prompted on my phone and even if I did, there's nowhere to put in the integration. Scratching my bald head. Help a dude out here. LOL. Nice vid tho! Cheers M8!

Excellent video. I have embarked on a journey to rebuild my UniFi network, and then my Smart home, which is primarily powered by Home Assistant. I swear over the past three weeks. I've learned so many new things because of people and videos like this. For years, I've been running under the if it ain't broke don't fix it mantra however, there is so many things out there that I just simply was not aware of but thank you for making a great video, expanding our knowledge and continue to contribute to this home automation community.

Hoping this video helps. Ive had it w/Ring. I just cancelled their basic subscription 5 minutes ago after the "customer support" agent informed me I couldn't switch from one device to another w/out wffectively cancelling the plan then paying another $5 to start a new plan. It was either that or pay $10 a month for bs service. To use my camera! I alreasy overpaid for this crap. I'm not giving you $100 bucks a year. Ain't happening. This btw came after a 2 month old battery for a stick up cam stopped working (I only used it for 2 weeks). The customer support lady on the other side of the world could have cared less that I told her I was gonna return all these devices. (Doorbell & two cams). I found your video, so I'm hopeful. I think many of us are in the same boat, we paid the money , now get out of my pocket!

Thanks for, once again, a great tutorial! We fell into the RING firepit in 2015, when they first came out. I have 15 cameras in two locations. All our cameras stream through firesticks all over our house. About a year ago, I started using ring/mqtt, because I wanted cameras on my ha dashboards and ha notifications. Scrypted with frigate could be a game changer, when my ring subscription ends at the end of this year. Although, $100 a year for unlimited recording 15 cameras is a good deal, even with ring's caveats. Next year, the price will double and I would have to purchase their new hardware. Alexa and Ring will have AI, but because of videos, like yours, I will have a dedicated Nas that runs something else! As for ring battery life, some of our cameras have 3rd party solar panels and the floodlights are ac. Would an automation that turned off the ring live stream entity, with no motion, keep frigate from killing the battery's? David Stanford
@technithusiast
@technithusiast 5 месяцев назад
You should test it and see! I get spotty results with the Ring MQTT plugin but in some of my tests, if Frigate was connected to my Ring Camera, it would keep the stream open and eat up the batteries. However, Frigate is useful for Entity detection so if you can get away with Ring's built in motion detection then the native Home Assistant integrations should work well for you.

Great job once again on the video. The production quality is pretty good. You did find one of the main problems with battery powered cameras in that when streaming video the battery dies very quickly. I don’t know the ring doorbell or if it can be powered off the traditional 2 wire door bell wire. That wire should have between 15 and 24VAC so it could power the doorbell if it had the option. I see that you are using go2rtc within frigate. The version built into frigate is 1.2, you can shoehorn in the latest version of go2rtc (1.7) by placing it in the frigate config directory (there is instructions on the frigate web site). You will need to update the default docker compose file to map the config directory and not just the config.yml config file. TBH I haven’t seen any improvements in the output from go2rtc but from what I understand there are additional codecs available with bug fixes. Newer is always better than older version, right?? Anyway, well done you were able to get that ring stuff to work.
@technithusiast
@technithusiast 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the compliment! Ring does allow you to power it via the traditional two wires in the back but I don’t have that currently where the doorbell is placed. What I’m uncertain about is if even I had the doorbell continuously powered, if ring would throttle or block the device since it must go through their servers. It’s also a possibility that the device may physically unable unable to stay on perpetually and the components burn out. :/ meh, we’ll see 🤷🏾‍♂️

Decided to get POE cams, and leaning towards Reolink. Now deciding not to use their NVR. I don't use Home Assistant, but use HomeKit. Is frigate worth it, or Scrypted enough? Apart from bringing Video into HomeKit Secure Video Scrypted has NVR features right?

Hi, I am new to self hosting home lab. Started to learn. This is really good video. Awesome job. I am planning to run Open Media Vault in my pi because I need to attach hard drive to store recordings. With in that I am planning to run container and I can run Scrypted there. Now I am not sure how I can integrate homeassitant, but I belive I can run it as container as well. I am not aware of NODE-RED and as a beginner this is hard to follow for me. Do I need to use node-red for the automation to work? If you could make beginner series on this that would be great. Thanks for all your hard work and awesome content.

@technithusiast

It still talks to the cloud services. there are plugins that allow you to interface with the devices through the cloud. One services is called Scrypted you can also use a native home assistant plug-in call Ring MQTT

@@technithusiast can you please tell how to to capture the bell click event without using node red? Or can you please link the image of timestamp inject node and looks that that is the one captures the bell click and starts the automation flow? Thanks
@technithusiast

I didn’t need to capture the bell ring event. Ring would emit a motion detected alert which I used to trigger the automation. Not everyone would push the doorbell - especially Amazon drivers. They would knock two times and run.

I want my smart home to be connected to chat gpt and be able to talk like most home system but feel more organic and to be somehow connected to my cameras, with a facial recognition software kind of like nest so it can learn faces, and remember passed conversions and offer a drink and let me know who is coming to the door or if a package is being left at the door and able to politely ask salesman to leave.

So while you don’t need a paid Ring subscription, you can’t ditch your Ring account, because Scrypted has to pull its video from the Ring servers. So your video security is only as reliable as your internet connection.

Why not Frigate to Scrypted rather than the other way around?
@nathanvancleave8434
@nathanvancleave8434 8 месяцев назад
I’ve found Scrypted to be just a reliable as Go2RTC and the time difference is negligible. The only reason I can think of is if you have an ONVIF camera. Scrypted can leverage the motion detection from the camera offloading that work from Scrypted and saving you a lot of CPU. Frigate, on the other hand, needs to detect the motion itself because of how it does object detection (runs only on cropped areas where there is motion). Because of this Frigate is more customizable with its detections. EDIT: you probably already know this. Just put this in case anyone else is curious.
@simdevils
@simdevils 8 месяцев назад
@@nathanvancleave8434 Yea but he is already using a coral TPU which is going to be doing the detection heavy lifting. I recently set this all up and i also am using both Frigate and Scrypted but i only have scrypted because i use homekit to interface with everything, whereas that isnt the case here so it can all be done with Frigate and its Go2RTC integration alone?. Idk i do like how Scrypted has an easy to use UI tho, wish their NVR pricing were less ridiculous.
@technithusiast
@technithusiast 8 месяцев назад
@simdevils Ring doesn’t really allow streaming their feed which frigate needs in order to do the detections. Scrypted allowed me to create an RTSP stream to send to frigate to do the detections. I’m really new to both frigate and scrypted so if there’s a better way I’m open 😬
