Thank you so much for this info. I have a toddler and there have been times that I have looked up from my phone and he is just staring at me, waiting for me to react to what he tried to show me. This is very hard to admit but it’s the truth. Everywhere we go, people are always on phones. I don’t want to be a slave to my phone.

The future ramifications of what you just described are yet to be discovered. An entire generation of kids who know their parent's and other people's faces mainly as bent down and staring at a screen...is frightening. Thank you for admitting that you are guilty like so many others, myself included. We need to individually work to re-prioritize society to be face to face, in real time, in real life, all the time. Otherwise we risk never getting real life back. It could be gone forever.

Was just telling my adult children who are in their early 20’s how thankful I am that we did not have this technology when they were young. We held off on getting smart phones way past most households in our suburbia community, and I am setting mine down more and more, longer and longer. Thank you for your efforts to shine a light on this social dilemma. It surprises me how often we are told of the mental health risks with smart phones and yet I see very few people trying to taper or stop their usage. When I tell my friends Im off my phone for a few days they all say “yeah, I need to do that too,” but sadly they do not.

Thank you for sharing! I ordered the Light Phone II for myself the other day and I keep having surges of panic wash over me where I think, “what have I done??? My friends are going to forget about me!!!” This video was super reassuring and reminded me that all of the little inconveniences will be worth it. I’m trying to build a life that aligns with my values and I certainly don’t value my 3-4 hrs/day of screen time!

How has it gone for you? I ordered a light phone (hasn't arrive yet), sold my iPhone on ebay (haven't reset/shipped it yet) and I'm wondering what it's going to be like. I have a young 1 year old son. I keep thinking...I won't be able to take pictures of him. I can't do this, or that. But then I realize I won't even be tempted to be scrolling on anything, and I will just spend the time with him and the wife. Every single video I've seen of this minimalist thing says it was hard at first, but it ended up being such an improvement in so many areas of life.

@@fairandfree9824 Hey there! Thanks for reaching out ☺️ It’s been about a year and two months and I’m still living the dumbphone life, full-time. It’s going wonderfully and I genuinely never think about it anymore. Full disclosure- I switched from the LightPhone 2 to the Sunbeam Wireless Orchid because I felt super left out not receiving photos. I still have so much love for the LightPhone, though. Such a gorgeous device! Regarding photos, I bought a digital camera but I almost never take it anywhere with me. I look back on how many pictures I used to take and I get so overwhelmed! There will be lots of bumps in the road and moments of frustration but as you go along, you’ll start to figure out a system that works for you. It’s a different lifestyle for sure, but it’s totally worth it! You are making a great choice ☺️

I listened to this on spotify yesterday while crocheting but I wanted to come and leave a comment. Its really refreshing to see an influencer talk about smartphone/social media addiction ! I think a lot of influencer/content creator might have this addiction but brush it off because "well its my job, how can I stop looking at my phone if its how I work". It was interesting to see you being able to work even without that smartphone. I dont feel ready to downgrade because a smartphone is just soooo handy especially for the GPS ! Maybe I'll try leaving it in the drawer like you did :)

I got my first smart phone less than 2 years ago. I had a dumb phone with a keyboard before that and I sure miss it! Sadly it died. I struggled finding a dumb phone like that to replace it (they were all flip phones or were not compatible with our provider) and I ended up giving in on getting a smart phone. Ease of texting was the only reason I got a smart phone. I just could not imagine using a flip phone to text and I would feel disconnected from some of my family and friends if I couldn't text with ease. But, oh, it does suck you in, even though I am not on Instagram, Facebook, etc. Frankly, I barely utilize the potential for my phone since I prefer paper lists and planners, and already had the old style baby monitor, etc. Even then it still sucks me in. I am very intrigued by the phone you have and may have to switch. Thank you for sharing!

I’m convinced I started to gain weight and keep it on when I got my first iPhone. And over the years I’ve collected electronics cuz I like them, such as cameras, ebook readers, tablets, and computers. But my iPhone can do everything all those things can do. It’s more convenient to charge one device than 5. But because it can do so much, you can spend hours and hours on it without realizing it. That’s why I’m ditching and switching.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm glad you've found a solution that works for you. When I first became a published author, I felt the need for a smartphone to stay in touch with readers and email my publisher while traveling. I didn't take into account that I wouldn't always have Internet access say, on a road trip or in a remote location. I discovered, upon my return, the humbling fact that others could get along without missing me. Nowadays, not having a signal is just fine. I'd rather engage with the here and now than stare at a screen. I'm thinking of getting a light phone because it's so much cheaper. Although I don't struggle over my smartphone, I do need to practice more restraint with my PC. I'll take your video as a reminder to dock my screen time more.

It’s addicting too with immediate text, call and notifications for working out…you name it. I knew I needed to regulate myself and cut back. I feel better for it. Sometimes rather than needing to take pictures to capture every minute let’s me be more present in the moment and appreciate it. It’s a good thing for everyone. Kids and adults.

I have to say Lisa I am so happy you did this! My husband and I have also thought about getting rid of our phones. You brought up the bank app thing, which I had not even thought of that is a total deal breaker for us. We HAVE to have a phone for deposits. We bank at USAA, a military bank and they do not have ANY branches in our state so the only way we can deposit money is by check through the app or direct deposit. Also you are correct about forgetting we used to function before the conveniences we have now. We got rid of our microwave, and I also am relearning how we did things before having it. And finding food tasted better! 😂😁

Awesome video! I have certainly been challenged with my smartphone addiction. I placed a pre-order for the Light Phone several months ago then canceled it but after several months I noticed that my smartphone addiction was very problematic (especially as a full time college student!) so I placed another order and will be receiving mine at the end of the month! I’m excited for the phone because of it’s unique design and simplicity but what is also a huge plus is the responsiveness of the light phone team! They are consistently improving the phone through updates and doing a great job of listening and communicating with their consumers. I’m super super excited!!

I have been wanting to get away from the cell phone addiction too and tried many of the things you've done and failed, but the method that finally worked for me was canceling our wifi and having just 4gb of data for my phone! All the things I was addicted too are online (youtube, Pinterest, Instagram, etc) and also use a lot of data. With my limited data I have enough for GPS and quick necessary uses online (and maybe a few videos at 144p). And then when we go somewhere with wifi (like the public library) I can download podcasts that I want to listen to. Just thought I'd put this out there for people who want an alternative option to stop the addiction.

I am someone who would want to get a decent camera and even a better laptop (mine went through a tornado and isn’t the best 😂) to be able to pay bills and such. Although my husband does have a smartphone I could use from time to time. Anyways, thank you for being open about all of this. I love that you desire more for your life ❤️

If you have an iPhone you can always set it up app restrictions. Decide which apps you want then restrict everything else. Get your partner or friend to set up a pass code for the restrictions that only they know.

I’m considering this phone but I am concerned about some of its flaws when I live in Alaska with no family in this state and my husband rarely home. I only have Facebook and RU-vid but ever since I got AirPods I constantly listen to podcasts.

I'm really wanting to get one. It ironically is more money than I've ever paid on a phone but currently I have an iPhone 7.

Will any cell phone company provide service? Does it work on 4G or 5G? How was the actual service/quality during a phone call ? One thumbs up or two? Thanks for sharing!

My name is Kathy for some reason it shows my husband's name. I think you're making a wise decision the less distraction from The Lord or our family the better. I was just praying about this before I got on my phone ,answered prayer. God bless you and your precious family.

This has been so interesting to watch. Being of the generation that has had to learn to “allow” my iPhone to take over certain tasks and make them easier for me, which is often adding frustration, I can totally relate! It’s everything I experience in reverse! Does that make sense?

Any adults here ever tried the Gabb phone? It has a camera and you can text pictures which is what's drawing me to it. But I don't know if it has podcasts.

I can’t get ANYTHING done with my phone! Idk how you and others even do it! I had to delete all social media apps on my phone and I’m fasting social media. It was just consuming my mind and time and make me not mentally present with my family. I really don’t know how people get anything done because my house was a mess!

I feel you and struggle hard not checking my phone. I took all the social media apps off my phone trying to overcome the addiction.

I’m stuck between getting a flip phone or light phone. Why didn’t you go back to a flip phone instead?

I just ordered the paper shoot camera which is super tiny and doesn’t have a screen. I’m excited to pair that with the light phone that I’m 90% sure I’m getting

I just recently got locked out of my Facebook. Everything, all history gone, photos gone. People gone. That's kinda sad. But it's the best. I've been consciously connecting only with people who really resonate with me. I have 20 friends, not 300+. Which is way more realistic and closer to real life.

I really like my Instagram for language learning.. with the constant daily phrases/audio. I only have these links and some work related and tried to program it to suggest only these... but yes, can often fall down the rabbit hole.
