need 2 work on your camera settings. Autofocus is useless in media creation when the object of focus has more objects at close distance between it and the camera... like your hands
This phone is definitely for people who want to significantly change their lifestyle, and I think it's pretty awesome for that. I've been using mine full time for a few months (after a few failed starts switching from an iPhone) and I love it so much. I'm so much calmer now without constant input from my iPhone. And this is a great review! I think everything you said was accurate. At first I didn't think I could deal with the downsides, but I adjusted and now the pros outweigh the cons for me. It helps to realize that we lived without smart phones before 2007 (and most of us later than that) and we were just fine.
Absolutely that helps to put it in perspective! I think the swap can be done. It would just take a lot of getting used to doing without all these crazy features that have built up in our phones over the years!
The battery is listed at 950 mAh, nearly 100 mAh smaller than my iPod touch 7th gen. That’s simply way too small. Just leaving it on searching for a signal drains it as experienced, 2 days tops. Shame, even a minimal increase would have made a big difference.
i really want to try an experiment and use this, a bluetooth mp3 player for music (i love wireless headphones too much) and a film camera to capture moments or maybe just a hybrid digital. would love to see how it would make a difference in a month or more
I've been using mine for a year and a half and have enjoyed it immensely. It's really changed my life. Ironic to say that 'if you want to use your phone less, get this' but it is true. That's what taking back your life involves (as their motto suggests). Good stuff man.
Not with this phone. Currently I'm running a 2-phone setup with one phone for work with apps and all and the other phone more streamlined for personal use.@@Herr.Mitternacht
My thinking is an iPad/Light Phone Combo would be how I function. It’ll take some work getting my blue bubble chats over to email over my phone number. But I can see that being a decent combo for the times that I “need” apps. I tried the Apple Watch with cellular as a minimalist phone but my new job is in a building that just has terrible service. I have expressed this desire to go dumber on my phone to my family and over Christmas they got me a Garmin GPS for navigation and a fairly decent point and shoot camera so at least those two needs are met.
300 bucks for a phone that does nothing? lmao idk seems ridiculous when you can literally buy a dumb phone that's equally cumbersome to text with etc for 10 times less? What's the advantage over those? That's the part i don't understand. Is it just the clever marketing, the UI, and podcasts? i feel like that's something apple could pull off, releasing a $300 almost dumb phone but compatible with imessage etc and that could have a certain amount of success but with all the disadvantages, i just dont get it
Cheaper phones usually have app stores. Other options are to get older phones or Chinese imports. Look into it, and you’ll find that getting a phone that actually “does nothing” is extremely hard to find.
"If you wanna never use this device.. then get one!" 😂👍 That is totally right on man! The whole thing slows us all down. I got a Light Phone 2 back a few years ago and absolutely LOVED it! It rocked my world and changed my life for the better. I was able to enjoy television shows again. Talk with friends. Be present with family. Then I got sick - don't get mono if you're over 50 - and "had" to go back to a smartphone for doctors, insurance, blah blah blah. We gave the Light Phone 2 to the kids for our "house phone" and so they could text friends or whatever. They LOVE it. They have never had, nor do they want, a "schmart phone" so it's perfect. Anyway, now I'm about to order a second Light Phone 2 for myself again. I'm all better and I miss not having this inane distraction all the time. (I will keep my smart phone as my camera.)
A second line is not necessary on all carriers. You can add this as a device to your existing number just as you would with an Apple Watch. Your text will be pushed to the Light Phone. BTW, the Light Phone III was just announced with an OLED screen and a camera. It looks awesome.
I need to look into the carrier thing… I DID see LPIII announcement and is DOES look awesome. excited to review on the channel near end of the year when they get review units in!
This phone teaches you PATIENCE...something everyone is lacking. Frustrating is good. We have become a society where we can't wait for anything..self entitled spoiled brats..
Slow down there baby boomer, the phone is a "dumb" phone with reduced features, logically this should mean that the few features it can do - it does amazing. This is NOT the case. If it types like absolute garbage and feels clunky to use at the price point of a high end 2nd hand phone it should be competing in SOME fashion.. But it doesn't.. there is absolutely nothing this phone can do that a regular phone with some minimalist apps installed can't do. I love the design, I WANT to want it, but its comments like yours that make me realise the only benefit for a phone like that is we don't have to read moronic comments like yours.
@@bravestarr19 I provide genuine problems with an overpriced product that can't deliver on its few functions - you - an idiotic baby boomer who will never buy this phone - decide to try use this as a platform for your nonsensical tirades, of which uniorinically - people who you're screaming at will never see. People don't care what you have to say, the irony being you have zero patience, yet too much time. Shown by the fact you can't provide marketable reasons why the phones flaws are perks. "Bravestar" hahahhaha
sadly this phone only supports SMS, meaning 100% of the text messages are able to be intercepted. On a smartphone you can use Signal and everything is E2E encrypted (including metadata).
ive use my light phone 2 for 4 years straight now and have a preorder in for light phone 3 which DID ditch the slow eink screen and DOES have a camera, so they are addressing the stuff you need. And its a bigger device its wide like a iphone for good fast typing, so im glad its gonna be a device you can now use as your only device. .I love using my light phone 2 and am excited to now get front and rear cameras finger print reader etc etc
the biggest perk was actually your pain point of more conditioning other people to let them know I was not as easy to reach so now nobody really bothers me and everyone is extra appreciative when they can reach me
A few years ago I used Light Phone II for Lent (40 days). At first I was frustrated with how slow texting was, but by the end of Lent I realised I was just calling my friends more. However, it doesn't support wifi calling, which I think is a necessity. I lived in NYC at the time I used the phone and where I worked had bad T-Mobile service, meaning I couldn't call while at work. I am the kind of person who could make the switch, especially because I now have a work iPhone (tho it's locked down to only Apple apps + work apps, and it's heavily monitored (can't sign into iCloud, use iMessage, etc...), but that does mean I could still use it for directions and the Amtrak app (I ride Amtrak daily for my commute). If the Light Phone had better battery life and wifi calling, I'd buy it again.
Love that man! Thanks for sharing. Check out Wisephone from Techless... honestly might be more of what you need. I'm excited to try it out for sure. Also, I love Amtrak! I rode up to NYC from Roanoke last a couple of years ago for a conference and it was awesome.
i think the same, e ink on a phone doesnt make sence, but if you would use a normal lcd display, everyone would think, why they not put normal android on it, so we where on the same point again, a normal smarthphone, so the e ink display will take the oppurtunity to change the os or do something else with it
True, but for a smartphone addict, having a smartphone and thinking you're only going to use the "good" parts is like an alcoholic pushing the beer out of the way in the fridge to get a bottle of water.
This guy spends too much time yammering on about absolutely nothing and not enough time showing us the damn phone. Like why do you even have a.face cam?
What advice would you guys give someone who's trying to make the transition to a dumb phone? Especially knowing how society has made having a smartphone almost a necessity. Certain jobs require that you have one even if they don't directly say it to you.
Minimize your smart phone as much as possible first. You may find that is enough! Other than that, it’s a jump, really. We’re all trying to figure it out! 😂
Do you think the reason typing on the Light Phone is such a pain because of the inherent lag of e-ink displays? Back in the dumb phone era I was texting almost as quickly as with a smart phone using the T9 interface, so the only reason I can think that a full keyboard would result in such an inferior typing experience is either due to lack of physical buttons or e-ink display lag.
If smartphones are cigarettes, the lightphone II is a nicotine patch (you know, the ones with a 97% failure rate on relapse) we need the vapes and zyns/snüs of phones. I want a safer and less harmful alternative, i dont want something so bad that im all but forced to go back to my old ways.
I went dumb phone with the Nokia 2780 flip and the texting in t9 is nostalgic but very slow and inefficient. Maybe that's the point, as you say but i'm intrigued by the lightphone 2 and the minimal phone whicvh has a physical keyboard but cant find a review on it. Does this also function as an e-reader? If not I think theyre missing the mark
TCL Nextpaper does this. It's not available everywhere, but I've seen it. If LCD and OLED screens in general weren't giving me constant, terrible migraines I'd consider it.
Little cameo in there from me ;) lol okay serious now. I'm 100% behind this review, I think it's a great non-emergency phone and the phone is perfect for someone who doesn't need all the interaction on a daily basis. If you're a spy and need a phone, this is it. I do wish there was an ability to mirror a device to a dumb phone so that you don't have to have a whole separate number. The barrier to entry for this device might just be too great for me. I've already done so much work on getting my phone as distraction free as possible, but going this far might not be the way to go. I'm always interested in hearing how people react to the E-ink displays, because that's one reason I don't even own a kindle device (although my wife does), I just didn't like how it felt so slow and unresponsive at times. I think one thing that could make all these dumb phones better is a camera, I can't go anywhere without some type of camera, if I'm going to have an alternative device, I feel like I need a camera to capture memories and experiences, especially with my family.
Does anyone know of a phone similar to this but that's maybe a little faster or smoother? I really like the idea of occasionally switching out my SIM for extended periods when I'm trying to be on my phone less. But I do want to not spend eternity typing out a text to someone lol
Agreed... someone mentioned a brand but it's not in the US market. It's an ink display but colored and super fast. Def interested. Also, check out WisePhone by Techless: techless.com/spencerscottpugh I will be making a video on the first gen soon but WPII is going to be pretty awesome. use SPENCERSCOTTPUGH for a discount if you get one.
@@SpencerScottPugh awesome, I'll definitely keep an eye out. The idea of these phones really has my attention, just haven't been fully convinced yet of any particular option.
I'm in the same boat. I'm very fortunate to be able to test these without having to commit to anything. Hoping my videos could help folks like us choose a dumb device that works best for them without having to purchase it first! @@brendanwhipple6787
@@SpencerScottPugh I uslly get about 3 to 4 days (the first month it was about 7 days then started to get shorter, not great) and seeing your wis phone review, makes me think It could get better. though I have asked and at this moment they don't have a reason they said on any upgrade in hardware. which I feel is a little sad even if they didn't add a camera making about the size of a iPhone 5 with the ink display would likely have better hardware
I love this phone and it did mean a change to the way I use a phone in general. I've had mine for around a year now and find texting to be easier to use with practice and it does have voice to text conversion which it great for quick messages. The company are always updating with more functionality and don't tie us in to the complex 'big brother is watching you' tech. It's a great phone for those who want to disconnect from surveillance whilst still being connected to those who love and need.🙃
love that! Thanks for sharing! I think it can totally work for some. THat said, I doubt there will ever be the PERFECT dumb phone as we all have our various needs!
Can I ask how it responds to voice messages people send? I’m debating making the switch but I’m curious what happens when someone sends a voice message? Is it similar to photos were you can send it to your email?
I don't know Jennifer whether you're referring here to my comment that it has voice to text conversion, but if you are, it is identical to being as if you'd typed the text, it converts your words into typed text. If on the other hand you're talking of voicemail, there's a small symbol left on screen which indicates that you need to dial your voicemail number in order to retrieve your messages. I hope that this answers your question.@@jenniferjacques4971
I’m not sure but I’m sure their website has info on where it’s available! Quality was fine though I think that has more to do with the network than the device. The speakers on the device are fine!
It's better to get a feature phone(the one that has buttons).Mine lasts for a month on a single charge. Its got 3000mah battery. And it has camera too.Its dirt cheap as well.Clever manufacturer.
I really want one. I am just concerned about things like 2FA, on occasion you will receive a link in a text for things like that. How do you get around that?
I would like it to be able to be used as a note taking device with handwritten notes using an emr pen, so a little bit bigger would nice and longer battery life would also be a must so making it a bit larger would also allow a bigger battery.
You can still do 2FA via calls/email for most reputable establishments and keep your local taxi number in your phone/plan ahead for a trip just like everyone did ten years ago. It's all harder, but that's the point. Not recommending this device, but if that's all that's stopping you, it's an easy fix.
And no, you dont have to notify people that you wont be texting constantly. It's like people have forgotten that we got along without cellphones just 20 years ago, and the modern smartphone for even less time. I went back to a piece of crap flip phone that you can barely text on a year ago. It's amazing.
