Hi Cuiv, really good to see you back. Good idea to get rid of the beard and have a good hair cut. You don’t need all that weight on your back ;-) Using dithering is so useful, and one of the easier things to setup in astrophotography. However I’m also glad you point out looking at high and low rejection. The number of times these frames have shown up issue in my frames is no funny. Any way hope your recovery continues at pace, I’m looking forward to your series on how to setup and optimise a Dall-Kirkham 500 on light polluted Tokyo rooftop.

Great to have you back. I think it is called the North American Nebula as the reddish part on the left side looks a bit like the eastern coast line including Florida. On a side note, do you know of any method to fix tilt in a camera where one side has oblong stars and the other doesn't.
@CuivTheLazyGeek

Good to see you back. Like you I am proudly lazy. So my question is: are calibration frames even necessary anymore as a result of dithering, extreme low noise back illuminated sensors like the ASI2600, and competent use of Photoshop/Pixinsight, etc?
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 2 года назад
Unfortunately out of all the calibration frames, flat frames are both the most important and the most annoying/least lazy to take. You can survive without bias or darks (I only use darks), but with a cooled camera darks are super easy to take, which is why I take them regardless of ROI. Flats on the other hand... I would never go without.

🤔 I don’t get it. Why the artifacts flipped after the meridian flip?! If they come from the camera sensor, they should remain in the same position independent of the position of the camera, this is the way the flat frames work. What did I get wrong here?!
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 2 года назад
Good question! The flats are applied to the light frames before registration/star alignment. So prior to the registration, the artifacts from the flats will all be in the same area of each image (say top right quadrant of the image). But, as the light frames are flipped by the flip, the part of the target that is in the top right quadrant of the image changes pre and post flip. So after registration (which rotates the flipped images to the reference frame), pre-flip will have the artifacts top right, but post flip bottom left. And so we get that pattern. Does that make sense?
@HelberPontes
@HelberPontes 2 года назад
Hi @@CuivTheLazyGeek , I got it now, it makes sense for me. If the flat frames “failed” to remove sensor spots, they will appear flipped after integrating images taken from both sides of the meridian.

Welcome back Cuiv. The bump is the back of the pelicans head, the beak moves left to right in your image. The dark nebula to the right of bump is the eye and underside of the beak. Your pelican is upside down, if you rotate 180 you will see the pelican more easily. The North America (not american) nebula is named like this because it is the shape of north America (obviously).. haha. The cygnus wall is basically Mexico. Rotate your image 90deg clockwise to see it more easily. I have provided a link to Trevor’s website. astrobackyard.com/north-america-nebula/
