A brave fisherman fought off a great white shark as the beast lunged at him multiple times during an intense nine-minute-long stand-off (NOTE: The video has been edited down).
While diving off the coast of Perth, Australia, on September 7, Joe Petrovich and some friends were spearfishing but he almost ended up as the prey.
Joe had strayed about 300 metres away from the boat, trying to hunt down a school of pink snapper before a four-and-a-half-metre long shark weighing approximately 400kg appeared.
Moments after the video begins, the shark checks and tilts its head to assess Joe’s defences.
On the fourth circle, the shark leant in further and eventually launched at Joe, who was only able to parry the potentially fatal attack with his gun as the shark’s bite narrowly missed under his right arm.
The shark retreated before almost instantly lunging again but for Joe’s legs, this time taking a chunk out of his left swimming fin as the footage shows a great deal of commotion and struggle.
Joe began his escape back to the boat as the shark continued to circle threatening attacks with each pass.
Eventually, Joe is able to the shark a taste of the pointed spear tip which gives the message to the shark that Joe is also a threat which slowly defuses the encounter.
The shark slowly backs off and Joe successfully makes it back to the safety of the vessel.

The most important thing is to keep your eye on the shark. As long as you are watching it then you've got a better chance of survival as they like to sneak up on you. Most shark attack victims never see the shark that attacked them and this is the way sharks like it. If he had tried to swim away the shark would have most likely attacked him.
@seattleflyboard3807
@seattleflyboard3807 2 года назад
The diver was too conservative. The shark was trying to decide whether or not to attack...he was thinking about it quite seriously. The diver should have aggressively tried to stick his spear point in the gills. This would have convinced the shark the risk was too high. That would backfire against a bull shark but against a white, it was the smarter choice. You can easily see the point in this video where the shark decides that he is leaning towards an attack. The diver should have never let it get to that point.
@seattleflyboard3807
@seattleflyboard3807 2 года назад
@@bobbybearing1767 ....the diver did misjudge and nearly lost an arm. he waited until the shark was already coming for a test bite to get aggressive with the spear. by that time he didn't have a good target. Its a lot easier to stick them in the side then when they are already coming at you.

I had something similar when I left a strip club in Las Vegas. A very large, muscular, drunk guy,with cornrows, who was thrown out for fighting, about 30 minutes earlier, decided I was his next victim, when my friend decided to leave. I just kept him at a distance, slowly backing toward the front door, until I saw the bouncers, go back inside, and close the doors..... ugg... Then i slowly started toward the street. Lucky my friend pulled up with the window open, and I just ran, and dove, into the back window, and he sped away. Watching this video, reminded me of that event.... so many years ago. I still have a small scar on my jaw-line from the 'skull with a helmet' ring he had on.

The man did really well in maintaining sight and a defensive attitude. 300 m from the boat in open water? Respect! If he had panicked, Whitey would have gone for it. I encountered a great white one day while scuba diving off San Clemente, CA. We were able to keep eyes on the whole time, while slowly(!) kicking back to the boat, which was close by. The other divers said we should be honored by the encounter - I told them what they could do with the honor. Being sized up for lunch really sucks 😕! No more dives that day 😂
@xtherealest
@xtherealest Год назад
If he just poked his head out of the water and screamed at the ship to come pick him up it would've been 10 times better. He definitely panicked. He was swimming frantically to the boat. The only thing that was stopping him from swimming faster was that he was missing one fin. Just keeping the shark on your eyes is not going to stop a 4 meter apex predator from attacking you. Neither will the speargun. The way he poked the shark with the speargun was what provoked the attack and why it tried to bite the diver. It was pretty unnecessary and it probably just made the shark mad and that's why he started following him all the way to the boat. He can be happy it wasn't like a bull shark because he definitely wouldn't get away without being attacked after provoking it with the speargun. You can swim slowly to the boat just like you said. The crew might not hear you scream (which I mean they should because it's literally their job to pick you up if something goes wrong) so you need to swim to the boat so swimming very very slowly while keeping the shark on your eyes might be just fine but if the guy didn't poke the shark with the spear and just stayed in one place without panicking the shark would simply lose interest and just swim away because it could sense it's not afraid of him and he would realize it's nothing to eat. This just made the shark think that it might actually be something to eat because it swims away like prey does. He's lucky great whites are pretty tolerant and they don't attack even if you do quite a lot of mistakes. You can see so many videos where even kids swim and splash around like crazy and there's a big great white swimming next to them and it doesn't do anything.

Never ever keep speared fish close to your body ( 1:17 ); likely the shark was going after that meal and the guy was simply in the way. Either leave the fish tied to your gun’s line by the float or have the boat fetch your catch, lessens the chance of a close encounter. Having said that, hat’s off to the guy; incredible presence of mind.

No, it was interested in him. You may know tropical sharks well, but Whites are another thing all together. If it was interested in an easy feed (like most tropical sharks would be), it would have pissed off after he dropped the fish. Whites in California subsist off of mammals primarily. They're not "confused" or interested in fish. He was interested in predating the guy and had he not put up a staunch "you can have me, but you'll have to pay" vibe.... He would have certainly been killed. Not all whites will consume a human body afterwards (maybe we taste bad), but we are definitely in the same class as their usual prey. This is a stark difference than say bulls, tigers, etc. who do eat fish primarily.

You never shoot a shark. You wouldn’t have time to cut your line. The shark would pull the gun out of your hands and the spear would be an exceptionally ineffective deterrent. If your gun is attached to your person, you’re going for a ride and would likely be drowned. You keep the spear between you and the shark, maintain eye contact, stand your ground and get close to your dive partner. Get to the boat but don’t panic and swim toward it fast or if you’re shore diving, slowly start swimming toward shore while keeping an eye on the shark and being prepared to defend yourself.

@synergyrevolution2332
@synergyrevolution2332 3 года назад
@@aronlane4664 Sharks make certain displays when aggressive, like how gorillas beat their chest or dogs show their teeth. One of the things they do is bend downwards at the waist to create like a hump on their back, this shark was just swimming straight and very slowly around the spearfisher. It might have bitten him but out of curiosity, not aggression or hunting behavior. The only reason it opened its mouth is because of the pokes it got. But you would successfully be able to defend yourself against a shark in this state if you just use any sort of object pressed against its snout, doesn't have to be sharp or painful, you can even just use your hand posted on its snout with your arm straight to keep distance between you and its mouth. You don't need to be strong to do that because you're in the water, if the shark keeps moving towards you while you have your hand on its snout you're just gonna float backwards. The only time this wouldn't be a good move is if your back is pressed against a boat or something.

The captain ordered the crew to stab them with spears so the won't eat out catch. Dude these spears did absolutely nothing to scare away the sharks. Completely unfazed by it. It looked like a kid poking a bull with a stick. And tiger sharks tend to have extremely tough skin. Iv seen videos of spear fishermen continuously stabbing a tiger that kept coming back again and again. Only thing that made it run away was when he actually got the eye.
