@@baddie1shoe I wouldn't go as far as to say no problem, because anything can happen unexpectedly that you didn't think could happen, that's why it's so dangerous, because there's no way straight to the surface when something does go wrong. I'm a certified diver, I was certified back in 1986, and I know that you just never know what can happen. I'm sure that Edd Sorenson was the one to get these guys out, I believe I seen this before and that Edd Sorenson was the one who retrieved their bodies, he's usually the one who does. Edd Sorenson is an incredible diver, he's gotten divers out of places that nobody else could, he's the best of the best, and when the most skilled divers can't get them out, they call Edd Sorenson to get them out! I'd really like to meet him some day! RIP to these two divers who lost their lives! 😔⛪🌸

@@baddie1shoe What do you mean what tips would I give you??? Are you a certified Diver? If not, then there's absolutely no tips I can give you other than to get certified first, and if you are already certified, then you should have been trained properly by your dive instructor. What every diver is taught or should be taught like I was, which is to never panic, because panicking can and will get you killed! Who were you certified by and when? I was certified by Scuba Hut in Glen Burnie MD through SSI back in 1986, and my Dive Instructor was Frank Eberle, which he's on Facebook and you can look him up.

@Aramaru 1837 Many things can go wrong--not following the rule of thirds with air management--one third in, one third out, one third for emergency. Silt out-zero visibility. Becoming entangled. Getting off main line and becoming disoriented-which way is out? Equipment malfunction. Not for the faint of heart.

Sarah Bayer there was no fear, they worked the problem the entire time. If you looked into what they almost pulled off, as far as an successfull exist, it's amazing. These guys had balls of steal and I only hope.i am half as goods a cave diver as these guys were and I'll be fine.

austin kaufman Well if these experienced and very well trained divers died, that means that anybody else could die as easily. They are doing this, aware of the risks, and know they could lose their lives. If somebody dies, the people who own that property could be sued for not having the nessecary safety precautions.

It's in a National Wildlife Refuge. Nobody is getting sued over it being open, the risks are clearly marked on multiple signs right next to the only access to the pond the cave is in and it's a good 15-20 minute drive off the main road on dirt trails through the refuge to get there.

I have a lot of fear for deep water, being in or on the water where I can't see the bottom, let alone where its obviously incredibly deep, that really freaks me out. Yet I got my SCUBA open water certification, and I did do dive to 20 meters and hope to do my advanced certification as well and dive up to 30-40 meters. I've managed to overcome my fears somewhat, and as long as the water is very clear and the bottom isn't like a 100 meters below me, I'm fine.

Oliver J Albrecht - I agree, and am saddened these two young men lost their lives. However, I disagree it is no more dangerous than other activities as you listed. The complex nature of deep diving, gasses used and the bodies reaction to them at various depths, and the confined and overhead enviroment that prevents a CESA all combine to make it much more dangerous in comparison in my opinion. That said, they were trained and experienced, and something went wrong that was simply beyond the ability to overcome. It happens, and is part of the assumed risk. Anyone thinking this was safe should rethink their position. I am not advocating not doing it, or banning it, but want people to know the risks are very real and very high, and the cost of diving technical dives as this can ultimately cost someone their life. It is a risk one must be willing to assume and somewhere, someone will draw the short straw occasionally.

I agree with your statement. Their are signs to let ppl know the risk. The trained & experienced divers knew the risk. Like with anything in life mistakes happened. I wish the families peace & comfort

All those sports have their risks, but it is a widely accepted fact amongst cave divers that it is one of the riskiest sports there is.

Dirty Blond Risks are mitigated through proper training and experience. This cave plunges hundreds of feet deep, putting it out of the reach of most cave divers. Only those who are trimix trained beyond full cave and who have over 100 logged cave dives should be at this site. In classes divers are taught proper procedures and redundancies for any conceivable emergency. Every so often a trained diver may go beyond their limits or not follow their training, but this is the case with participants in any other activity listed here. There will always be those types of people, no matter the activity.

I don't know how many people practice cave diving, but 12 death in 3 years in the US is not stunning. for comparison, every winter about 100 people die in avalanches on the Alps, but I suspect ski touring is more popular.

Sharalynn Shanley yeah I’ve dove there. There’s a bottom at 130ft and a cave entrance that is bared off right at the bottom. I know a diver passed away in the cave there. Beautiful water they have there in that natural spring fun place to swim too

That's why only experienced people trained as cave divers should be doing it. A regular diver who isn't officially trained as a cave diver will not be prepared for the types of surprises that await.

These two gentlemen were experienced cave divers and had the training to do the dive safely. Unfortunately, diving below 200' is a risk-laden activity and when things go wrong, it can be unforgiving. Whatever situation occurred, they did not make it out. I'm acquainted with people who knew them and they were good guys and good divers.

they are on rebreathers no narcosis. ppN2 is kept low, END of maybe 50ft.

You can still get narcosis with scrubbers. This is what killed David Shaw.

David Shaw over breathed his rebreather. The scrubber can only remove CO2 so fast. If you breath really fast and heavy it will overload the scrubber and toxic CO2 levels will develop in the breathing loop.

Probably not. They were not supposed to be diving that deep without proper equipment and training.

One of the men probably got into trouble first. Panicked, grabbed the other guy since he was disoriented. Someone probably pulled off a mask. Game over at that point.

I'm not a cave diver, but I ran out of air at ~70 feet. What happens is you take one breath out and when you try to breath in, literally nothing happens, almost as if the diaphragm is stuck in the regulator (if you know the feeling). At this point, you go into panic mode, and from there adrenaline kicks in. You stop even trying to breath. In my case, I was owd so there was a surface I could get to. Since my lungs were empty, no risk of an embolism, just go to the surface as fast as possible, hope you don't go into deco (I didn't). For them, they'd not have that option which is why cave diving is so so so so much more dangerous.

@@sprogovac Thank you! Finally someone understood my question and answered it accordingly!What a horrible feeling it must be to completely run out of air. In your case, there was a way out and I am glad you survived. If it happened to a cave diver, there would be no way out and they would die a horrible death. Even thinking about it scares me.

great point...i never thought of that. Also, although i'm a non-diver, i read that it's really easy to run through all your air the deeper down, because your air supply time is halved for every 30ft (10m) you go down? So, with nitrogen drunkness, don't pay as close attentioin, and then the air is nearly gone before you realize.

@@randomschmo5778 yeah it’s something like that. Every 10m is an extra atmosphere so your lungs are halved in capacity and burn though air. Novices like me breathe harder and don’t conserve air like the pros do. Smokers and panicking are factors too

I strongly agree. I personally am a coward who can't swim. I snorkeled holding a buggy board after receiving careful training and attention. Don't know why I wrote this. Point is, I can't abide by the closure of natural, wild places of beauty and personal challenge because of tragedy that happens. I am guessing that non swimmers were the ones demanding closure.

P.S. I could submit the names of interstates, expressways and parking lots to go....
