Today's episode is all about how to care for snake plants. I show you how to divide or propagate a snake plant that i had received recently. It had been overwatered and now was the perfect time to save it and split it up into some new soil.

Thank you so much for this video! I have watched so many other ones but non tells me how much water after the repot, and that orange roots means it’s too much water. I have divided mine today which few are already rot from the roots but I didn’t repot them into few smaller pots just some separations and I decided to water both some not much. hope it survives. I didn’t cut but just snapped by hands on the roots, and threw away some that are really orange looking, is that too harsh to the plant?

Hi Jewel, I think your plant will be just fine. Growth may slow for a short time so just be careful to let the soil dry between watering

I’ve had snake plants that haven’t been watered in a couple months (on accident) totally dry, and others that have been watered right and all have had orange roots. I always thought the orange roots were normal. Never had any issues
@plntfriends

Hey! I have come to learn also that a mild orange is fairly common, however in my specific plants case, it was very soggy and starting to rot which was past the normal colours and into a darker orange /brown. Thanks for the comment, as someone reading will find your information helpful!

I managed to kill a very old and extremely large snake plant. Ive since bought new smaller younger ones. One of the centre leaves was loose when i bought it. Its still healthy and not soft near to the soil. I may try and divide the plant as you did and take out the loose leaf and repot it. Fingers crossed i dont kill this one. Did you use a multi purpose compost or a mixture with sand and grit?????

I just used a regular potting soil with a bit cactus mix. I rarely water the snake plants and so I’m not at risk of over watering them. A good soil is cactus or some coco coir mixed in for good drainage. Wishing you success!✌🏻

I have snake plant that has lived and thrived in large clay pot for FIFTEEN years, without out being repotted or fertilized. I KNOW. Go figure. It sets in my large foyer that gets a lot of indirect sun. Plus I probably forgot to water it so much it did better than it might have otherwise. Some of its stalks are about 4' tall. Some 1-2ft. I'm think I am going to get multiple plants from this guy. Question is: Should I move the ones with the tallest stalks?
@plntfriends
@plntfriends 2 года назад
You could also consider cutting the tallest stalks down and propagating them into new pots. That would leave it a bit more even and also provide multiple plants to grow. From the sounds of it, your snake plant is a beauty! ✌🏻

@magenta6480
@magenta6480 Год назад
@@plntfriends I am not sure if this question can be answered online and without pictures... I had divided my snake plant a few weeks ago and it so far has been successful! The only problem is that one of the rhizomes didn't have roots. I wasn't sure what to do at the time, so I left it connected to one other rhizome and repotted them together. (5 out of 6 of them had what looked to be a normal amount of roots.) It looks like the one without roots is fading in color and some of the ends of the leaves are yellowing. I do not recall seeing any black spots on the rhizome or major discoloration, just a lack of roots. (I consider myself one to underwater rather than over water.) But as it appears to be dying, I am thinking I might divide it from the healthy one and repot it, and then try to propagate the leaves from the dying one in case it is a fungus. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
@plntfriends
@plntfriends Год назад
@@magenta6480 hi, sorry for the delay in answering. If it were mine, I would separate it from the otherand put the end in a cup of water or a perlite box. It should sprout roots from the rhizome with a little time but need to keep it moist/ humid. Good luck!

My Sanseveria plant seems to have an aversion to water! I started new plants from older leaves in soil. The new baby plants were doing well, until a bout with Thrips destroyed 2 of the four small plants. Now, it seems, even if I give the plants minute amounts of water, the leaves will turn yellow, from outer, to inner. The third.plant died like this! But it left a tiny little sprout, before dying. Now, the fourth, and last plant is touchy to water! I'm affraid to water it. The tiny one has one yellow leaf, and one green one! IDK, feeling very discouraged at this point.
@plntfriends
@plntfriends 2 года назад
I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your plant. It sounds as though there could be a root issue. Have you tried to remove from the soil and replant in new soil? Might be worth a shot, as well could use hydrogen peroxide to deal with any root rot fungus or pests. I have never had a sanseveria turn yellow but that would be where I check first.
@xlrider1565
@xlrider1565 2 года назад
Thank you for replying. This all started, when I discovered tiny black Thrips were gouging into the plant's leaves. The Thrips are now dealt with, but 2 of the 3 plants have died! The remaining plant is small, and kind of fragile. I've replanted in recently, and the roots looked good, no evidence. of root rot. If this plant dies, I won't get another Sanseveria. Thank you so much for the tips! Aloha! 💟🤙
