Dividing Cranesbill geraniums also known as Hardy Geraniums is very easy and can be done in Spring or Fall. Cranesbill grow larger and spread over time into big clumps.
#plantpropagaton #hardygeraniums #easygarden
Dividing them every 3 to 5 years keeps them healthy and blooming their best.
With any perennial you wish to divide start at the drip line, that way you can get most of the roots.
Root division is one of many ways to get more perennials in your garden for free and that is what I am doing today.
I know this geraniums grows fantastically in my garden and blooms all summer long. I love plants the perform with easy.

I put a small pot in the ground and put the geranium stem junction into the small pot and once it was rooted I cut the mother root stem and now I have a new baby cranesbill geranium. I root the strawberry shoots the same way.

This is so great thanks Pamela, I've found some geraniums 'Summer Skies' and 'Cloud Nine' at my new place (there are perennials popping up all over and I have no clue what's where yet) but these are so very pretty and they are somewhat hidden away in a far corner of the garden so I'm delighted to see you digging them up and dividing I am definitely going to have a go and try move some of these, thanks again really appreciate it - I always learn something here :) Take care x

Those varieties sound lovely, I will have to look them up. Watching your garden unfold before you must be fun to watch, a fun adventure. I am so glad you find what I share helpful. It makes all the work of creating these videos worthwhile!

When I dug mine up I noticed I left a few taproot pieces in the hole. I took the main plant divisions elsewhere in the garden because it was too tall for the space and blocked a view of the garden so I divided in two and took them to an edge where they could grow tall and ramble. Question: Do you think those root pieces I left in the original hole will grow back in that original space? Just wondering. Some plants grow back from root pieces and some don't.

They can, I know some of mine I left did.

Love your videos. Have you ever grown hardy geraniums from seed?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
I have had one hardy geraniums come back from seed but the ones I have are mostly sterile. I do plant Zonal Geraniums from seed also known as Pelargoniums. I have some growing right now and I did a video of it. Just getting it edited.

Hi there, what are all of the white fragments in your soil?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

Some of that is perlite and some is rice hulls.

Ok so I did a mistske cause I took off most of the leaves when I replanted. Was that wrong?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
Well, I have not tried that but they could very well put all the energy in making roots and be fine. Sometimes the leaves die back anyways so I think you are okay.

Can you take cuttings of Geranium Rozanne? I have a new one in the ground that is not really big enough yet to divide but I would like to take cuttings of it to plant elsewhere.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
Yes, but it needs to have some woody bits sticking out of the ground, not just fresh green growth. I should see if I can do a video.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse That would be great, there doesn't seem to be many videos on dividing new plants on the net. I know some are easy to do just as garden pinks if you buy a decent sized plant but I never know how big a new plant has to be to risk dividing it.

It is just About the beginning of June, is it too late to divide my geranium Roxanne? It has already bloomed
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
No, go right ahead and do it, they are tough and as long as you keep it moist and if it is very hot where you are right now, give it some shade. I do that my putting a large potted plant that has a bit of a canopy of leaves by it to provide some relief from the sun.

Can I still divide mine now (in early June) even though it's still blooming right now?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 года назад
I have heard you can divide anytime of the year though when it is cooler and is done blooming is considered best. But I break the rules all the time. I just haven't with this plant yet so I can't say a definite yes from personal experience.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse thanks for the response. I have the geranium, Tiny Monster, and it blooms all summer, so I think I'll wait until the Fall to divide it.

What’s the best time of year to do this? I want to move mine and it’s flowering at the moment .. June UK
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 2 года назад
I do it anytime. But most perennials are best divided in Fall or early Spring.

I don't know, since I am unfamiliar with your local conditions. If you see new growth then it is most likely safe to do so.

Do you have to stake Mine flopped
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
Some can get big and floppy. I don't stake mine as they ramble through some roses which support them but you can make a small support with wire. I will do a video of that. Sometimes I give them a haircut, which means I cut them back to about 5 inches and let them regrow.
