Geraniums are such lovely plants for a garden. I've never done a root cutting before so it's good to see how to do it. I keep forgetting to tell you both that I clicked on the link that showed how you made your garden in Sheffield. It was really interesting and showed all the hard work that you both put in. It really was a super garden. I've been watching old videos with Geoff Hamilton called "How to make a cottage garden". There are some elderly gardeners in it so I hope that I am still gardening in my 80's-90's! Hope you both have a lovely weekend and thanks for your kind words about my auntie. xxx
We learnt so much from watching Geoff Hamilton and have some of his series on DVD that we still regularly watch. Some of the gardeners on his programmes are fascinating and have so much good advice. He was such a passionate no-nonsense gardener and believed in many of the things that we think of as being 'new' these days such as chemical free gardening, peat free compost and wildlife gardening. He was ahead of his time for the 1980s. When I watched him growing up, I wanted to be just like him and hope the same passion comes through in our videos with good horticulture too. Root cuttings are so marvelous and well worth a try. Thank you for taking a look at the Sheffield post on our blog. We had many years of pleasure creating this garden and learning along the way. You're welcome about your auntie, you must miss her very much. We keep our loved ones that have passed alive by talking about them and remembering them. I think I have said before that I haven't really propagated plants but you have inspired me to give it a go. I was fortunate enough to find a copy of Carol Klein's 'Grow your own plants' in a NT second hand bookshop, I wouldn't have even looked at it before watching your channel so thanks for that. That book is fantastic, we learnt so much from it and Carol is really good at explaining things that you just can't help but want to try it. Glad you enjoyed the bloopers too! One of my favorite things about these geraniums is that you could drive a car over them, yet they'll bounce back and grow perfectly again. So hardy. Great for the beginner gardener like myself. 🙂
Will definitely try this with my own Patricia's, I love the touch of color they bring to the garden. It looks a little intimidating but I have succesfully propagated a wallflower with the help of your video's and now I'm ready to propagate anything!

Hello. Thanks for the video. When you covered the horizontal cuttings with "grit" what do you mean? Perlite maybe? Its spring here so maybe me splitting my geraniums now and replanting wasnt a good idea right now, huh?
It's horticultural grit we are using, you can get it from garden centres. Dividing geraniums in spring is fine but leave the early flowering ones such as G. phaeum, and G.macrorrhizum to flower first. You can still do the summer flowering ones however. Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for this video, I am going to be trying root cuttings this year for the first time but I thought you have to do them in winter, can you please clarify this. Also what other plants can you take root cuttings from.
Your're welcome, winter is considered the 'best' time to take root cuttings although in our experience they can be taken at any time of year. The main issue is getting to the roots in the first place and disturbing the plant, which during the growing period is going to affect the plants performance. In the winter the plant is asleep so doesn't notice the removal of roots. If you're already taking the plant up as we did in order to divide, then the opportunity to access the roots is available and can be seized. We have another video coming soon on vertical root cuttings from Eryngiums (sea hollies) which we've recently bought. They are in pots and the roots are easy to get at before they get planted in the garden. Other plants that can be propagated from roots include oriental poppies, primulas, Japanese anemones and Verbascum. Give it a try, it's such a fascinating form of propagation.
Do you know anything about starting hardy geraniums from seed (non-sterile varieties)? I have a wild species native to my area that is a hardy Geranium that I'm trying to grow from seed -- because getting the transplants are so expensive. The seed is really big and hard kind of like a lupine, I'm trying cold stratifying them in the fridge with a paper towel but I wondered if they would benefit from scarification. Thanks for the vid, hopefully when I have more plants I can just divide them like this or do the root cuttings.
The ones we have grown in the past germinated without any pre treatment but all our seed back then were stored in the fridge anyway high could have helped. Carry on with your plan as yours may need it. Make sure the paper towel is moist, or use some damp sand. I would try a small batch without scarification and see if they germinate. If not, try scarification on some of the remaining seeds. Once you get them growing you'll have many more plants from doing cuttings and division. Good luck with them 👍

Geranium endressii x psilostemon 'Patricia' has received The RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2005. It also received a RHS Plants for Pollinators Award. Everyone can find a spot to feature this durable and beautiful cultivar. Even with limited soil space I have been able to feature different hardy Geraniums in pots.
G.'Patricia' deserves all those awards as it's such a fabulous plant with beautiful flowers. Hardy geraniums are really easy plants and also do well in pots like you say 👍. We have many in our garden and love them all.
