Heron Island is a coral island located at the southern edge of the Great Barrier Reef. This tiny island houses a popular eco resort and University of Queensland research station. The island is a popular destination for diving and snorkeling as, being literally a part of the reef, to provides easy access to marine life. You can snorkel the reef from shore or take a boat trip to the deeper waters for scuba. Remarkably, the island is nesting ground for the green sea turtles. Every year it attracts a lot of tourists that want to see turtles come to the shore to lay eggs or the spectacular event of hatching. Even outside the nesting season they can be seen in Heron Island waters in large numbers.
From the mainland the island is accessible from Gladstone, QLD by the ferries. Alternatively, you can take a scenic helicopter flight. The only commercial accommodations available at the island are at the resort. There might be also an option to volunteer at the research station and get accommodation there for free.
In this video I would like to share some footage of the reef and marine life filmed during the dives at the island. I hope you will enjoy.
