The exHMAS Brisbane offers the best wreck diving experience in South-East Queensland.
Launched in 1966, the exHMAS Brisbane served in the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf before being decommissioned in 2001. In a unique transformation, the ship was scuttled in 2005 to create an artificial reef, enhancing marine life and providing a spectacular dive site.
The wreck is located near the town of Mooloolaba at Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where it rests at the depth of 27. With the deck being at around 15m depth, the dive site is accessible for both beginner and advanced divers. The exterior of the ship is now a thriving marine habitat, adorned with colorful corals and teeming with diverse aquatic life, including schools of tropical fish, large groupers, octopuses, lionfish and some special visitors like manta rays and grey nurse sharks.
In the ship's interior, the hallways and rooms tell stories of its past. The control room, living quarters, and engine rooms are still distinguishable, creating an eerie yet fascinating atmosphere. Even toilets at the bathrooms are still well preserved. The schools of thousands of fish and other marine life now inhabit these areas.
So join me on this virtual dive into the exHMAS Brisbane and experience the awe of exploring a piece of naval history transformed into an underwater sanctuary.
