Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan invented the original Aqua Lung regulator in the early 1940s and revolutionized recreational scuba diving to bring it to where we are today. Later, the Aqua Master was produced, improving the design tremendously. But how much has actually changed between the Aqua Master and today's modern regulators? In this video, we dive a 60-year-old DA Aqua Master and compare it to an Aqua Lung Legend MBS, the current top-of-the-line regulator from Aqua Lung's lineup. You will be SHOCKED at how little has changed. If you're curious about the history of scuba diving, vintage scuba gear, and specifically vintage scuba double hose regulators, check this video out.

I was certified in 1969 and have been actively diving since then. The double hose was still popular, especially for spearfishing and photography. Everyone was trained with both the single and double hose. There was nothing to compare. The double hose was far superior if you were a serious diver. In spearfishing, it made it possible to get just a little closer to targets. Photography was easier, no bubble obstructions or mask vibration. Never any noisy bubbles or in your hood. No jaw fatigue, or stress on the mouth from turning far left or right. A pressure gauge, a second stage single hose, BC or dry suit, can be attached. I always chose to use none. As far as repairs, new parts are currently available to completely rebuild the US Divers Aqua-Master and Royal Aqua-Master double hose regulators, and a few Voit regulators. Adjusting or replacing parts is simple with common tools, coupled with the ability to follow the instruction sheet that was packaged with each regulator. I can only speak for the US Divers Aqua-Master and Royal Aqua-Master double hose regulators, but they have only 1 "o" ring in the entire regulator, located in the high-pressure chamber. Compared to a single hose regulator, which has normally 10 or more "o" rings, you have a significantly reduced chance of air leakage with a double hose. I used a US Divers Calypso J single hose regulator for less than 3 months after certification in 1969, then purchased a US Divers Royal Aqua-Master and have used that model since then. When aluminum tanks came out in 1972, I acquired the new US Divers Royal Aqua-Master regulator with the high-pressure yoke. When they went out of production in 1974, I acquired several more, thinking they would eventually wear out. I was wrong, it's built like a tank. Evidently, with a little care, they will literally last a lifetime. And yes, normally I dive at least 1 tank/week, sometimes 4+. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

This is amazing. I definitely wasn't knocking anything. I got to dive the US Divers (Aqua Lung's patent they let US Divers use to manufacture in the USA) DA Aqua Master and like I show in the video, we did a full tear down of it. It's VERY simple, but works great, and is honestly super similar to modern regulators. I've been searching ebay for Aqua Masters and Royal Aqua Masters now because I want to restore one for myself. It was great diving it! Oh and as for SPGs and redundant second stages, it depends on the model from what I've seen. The one my buddy let me use for this video has a hookah port, but no way to hook up anything like an inflator hose SPG, redundant second stage, etc. Just depends on which model since they added some stuff in later productions (like when they went yellow hose and such too, from a key turn to a wheel valve on the back, etc). Super cool checking out the old gear and being able to dive it was great!

You've got the box band incorrectly installed. The screw connection goes on the bottom, with the notch in the band on the exhaust side. Evidently you didn't make any errors inside the box, or you would have no air flow or a free flow. Always enjoy seeing someone enjoy using a double hose. Glad you like it.

I just bought a 1966 double hose. I can’t remember the brand. But there’s a guy in Ohio that rebuilds the double hose regulators and makes them more modern but keep the old look. He just called me yesterday and is getting started on rebuilding mine

The Royal Aquamaster has a balanced diaphrragm first stage. And as you say is very similar to the legend. The only major changes in regulator design since the 1960's has been the balanced second stage in the mid 1980's. Most all the other changes are gimicks by the manufacturers to sell regulators. The single hose regulator was introduced in the 1950's. The balanced Piston regulator and adjustable second stage were introduced in the late 1960's. The Seaquest horsecollar BCD was designed for SCUBA diving not a survival vest for pilots. The Sequest was available with an autoinflator like we have today. The Force Fin company was founded in 1985. The mask your friend is wearing was called the Aqualung Atlantis II which had finger pockets to equalize. Some of the older masks did not even have that. I would say the major changes since the 1960's were introduced in the 1970's: Back Inflate BCD's, Power inflators, Jacket Style BCD's, Safe Second Stages (Octopus) With the exception of the Electronic Dive Computer being the last major change. If memory serves me correctly was introduced in the 1980's. The first one I remember was called the ORCA. I'm talking recreational dive equipment. Amazing how little has really changed in the last say 35 years. Thanks for the interesting video.

I do think it’s interesting that you’re required to learn dive table planning despite a computer being standard equipment. Yet we aren’t taught how to clear water from a double hose reg. I’m positive the real method involved rolling to one side to help move the water up that loop
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 11 месяцев назад
Depending on the system, water just is in that outflow loop. The one we dove has a duckbill that helps prevent water from getting in but it happens. You can clear it with the exhale like I mentioned, or you can technically let it free flow by raising the loop above your head (since it’s not balanced for that) then basically quickly pull it back down to your mouth. I like the double hose set up a lot though!
