Man, I would love to see other RPG game devs implemented this kind of special theme soundtracks for player's character. It enhanced the overall experiences.
This game has attracted and retained players that doesn't generally like turn-based rpgs or combat. A masterpiece indeed. GOTY IMO, Larian studios has outdone themselves.
the 14th game to ever get a 10 from gamespot. now that's an honor right there. really cool that Kevin Van Ord was a writer for the game and actually reviewed the last divinity original sin for gamespot.
This is why indie developers are the future of gaming, not greedy AAA publishers. Even the main press are starting to recognize this reality as evidenced by the rating.
Afaik they already had enough of publishers, even had to change their first game title to "Divine Divinity", because publisher thought that "Divinity" wouldn't sell.
@Suryanto Tan The Witcher 3 was 60$ when it came out just like most other AAA games. It was an amazing game though, CD Projekt Red are one of the few good AAA companies.
I just bought this game and I can't believe how good it is. I feel like I'm back playing KOTOR, Baldur's Gate 2 or Witcher 3. It's a masterpiece, the gold standard for RPGs.
Mate, enjoy. Game is a whole other LVL. So much to see and do. Still think a 9/10 would be a more righteous score though. It still has bugs. Nothing game breaking (for me) but a Bug is a Bug, right?
+Blah That depends from people to people. Skyrim was a buggy mess and yet people forgived it for how good everything else was. Bugs dont mind me if the rest is superb , and thats this game for me.
I'm glad this game is getting good reception! This game, Zelda BotW, Persona 5, and Nier Automata really set my standards of gaming for me. This game is probably one of the most immersive RPG's I played. I felt I almost had complete control and choice at every turn. The amount I could experiment left me in awe. This game proves games don't have to have top of the line graphics to feel immersive and good. This is what an RPG is, imo.
Magnum_Koichi Nah, BOTW was crap imo. Bad graphics, dodgey framerate, clunky, delayed controls, boring gameplay (just visiting simplistic shrines with puzzles a toddler could do again and again gets old), meh storyline.
@@TheKestevon They got kickstarted so they were able to afford selling it low. But holy shit, they are one of the best developers because even after selling the game, they still continue to add more content/tweaks in the form of gift bags for free.
I actually got quite emotional seeing all the praise from critics and gamers. Not joking. It's heartwarming to see that sometimes the old-school aren't dead yet.
I hate turn based rpg, I prefer diablo style rpg but I must say this is the best game I have ever played in my entire life. The only game that deserves a 11/10
86 hours in. Just started a second playtrough. The amount of love, dedication and detail that has been put into this title is just mind blowing. It pushed baldurs gate 2 from its thrown. Thank you larian, i have a new favorite rpg. A deep and emotional game. Deserves all the love it gets. You pulled it of larian. Well done. I will ascend to godhood ones again.
While I agree and don't use GameSpot or IGN to make any decisions, I do find GameSpot and IGN game reviews super useful for sharing videos with people who don't have the patience to watch a 15 minute or longer video.
Damn two 10s this year! But I bet this game deserves it. I was blown away by part 1 when I got it for PS4. Just finishing Witcher 3 and Fallout 4; I was amazed at how really open this gameplay was. Open world games claim that each player will have a unique experience, but I really feel this game delivers that. So many ways to advance a situation, so much variety in battle. Can't wait to get this.
Ive always hated people who get all worked up about Spoilers but... *Spoiler alert please! * Started playing it yesterday. I guess if she's gonna die then i should probably do it humanely before someone else does. It will be quick and painless, probably better this way...
Haha thought as much. Just goes to show how the choices matter even in the little bit (still a lot of hours) ive played so far. She's is still alive... For now.
Even for someone who never like playing strategy game or turn based combat game like me, this game is soooooo amazing, I told a woman that her father died at beach and show his ring to her and she take it, then I was like "heyyyy I love that ring" and then I kill her too. 10/10 for gave me such a freedom in game.
A detailed fantasy world with a lot of moral ambiguity, tensions over the regulation of magic, and that offers players intriguing moral choices, lots of character customization and engaging strategic combat? This sounds like a better Dragon Age game than the actual ones we've been getting lately; I'll definitely have to check it out!
@@thatsalotofdamage8568 Nah, here's a secret. Most people end up miserable and sad that they chose to breed a bunch of ungrateful shit-monsters while signing their life away to one person while knowing they are trapped and can never escape either the life or child support. Think more carefully about your major life decisions kids. :D
Jordan Doyle I hope it isn't silly to say, but the game is so involved and it has so much detail and freedom that you lose yourself in the game. The level of consequences and figuring your way through alternative situations and adapting to your mistakes feel like life in some sense.
I've seen players not typical to this style near in tears after finishing this game at how good it is. Only to go right back at the character creator for another go. These guys have set a standard in RPGs that other companies would be wise to look at in the future. I hope it vastly inspires game developments to come.
defo!! I Honestly used to REALLY dislike isometric/top down rpgs, never played them, always thought i couldn't get immersed unless i was playing in 3rd person or first person(witcher, skyrim etc) ..but FUCK ME...this game is awesome, my eyes have been opened to a whole new type of game. I KNOW you have already decided to get the game buddy, just thought i would get my 2 cents in ;) lol
for the first time in an RPG the elves are both visually and thematically appealing to me... i would still probably play human or dwarf... but it's something
I bought this game not knowing if I would like it, because I mainly play FPS games. If you could describe this game in one word, it would be beautiful; from the music, to the character development, to the story development this game is spectacular. I am an Instant Divinity: Original Sin fan. Even talking to my brothers about getting it to play together. I would highly recommend this game just give it a try.
I actually prefer the journal style of questing. Reminds me of Morrowind. I hate how the Elder Scrolls games have gotten more and more dumbed down with every release, makes me feel like they are treating me like some child who can't think for himself. Quest markers suck! It's encourages lack of exploration and finishing quests don't feel like an accomplishment at all. Skyrim was pretty much based around following quest markers, so even turning them off doesn't help, as they don't tell you directions, it just leaves you stranded without the slightest clue of where you're going or how to get there. So this game is looking pretty good to me!
Score 10? As someone who plays the game, I don't know if I would be biased but this game deserves it. It is really hard to elaborate all good game features mechanics and how combat feels engaging and how rich campaign story is.
That criticism of the journal sounds to me like a judgement based on an assumption of how quests markers should operate. I understand that it can be frustrating that the markers don’t lead directly to where u need to go but I think that leads to a more interesting albeit demanding experience
Been watching a lot of reviews of the game already bought mine as early as march. Just here to see how it's taken in by reviewers out of all the videos I've seen this is the most detailed one and I totally agree w everything. Keep up the good work GameSpot.
Coming from an Xcom/Xcom 2 background, I can really appreciate the strategy, placement, technicalities and action points in the combat. It really brings out your creative and tactical juices trying to beat some overwhelming odds. I really am not into Fantasy or medieval themed RPGs, preferring Sci-Fi, but DOS is an extraordinary exception, as I really feel like I am playing the role of a Red Royal Dragon or Demon possessed Sorceress...LOL. The co-op and multi op LAN/Split screen/P2P options and features are a STRONG aspect of the game that I thought had long since been forgotten, but am glad, is there in today's world of "live services" and Online only multiplayer.
It's a psychological thing. If there's a big glowing red flag on your map, your mind is telling you to go that way to progress through the story because going there is something you must do. A lack of quest markers gives more freedom to explore and make your own decisions.
This and PIllars of Eternity 2 are both true 10/10 games (I give Pillars a 10 for being everything Baldur's Gate 2 was and improving on enough of it, while staying true to the content)....where Divinity lacks that overwhelming-yet-holding-up nostalgia factor, it makes up for in combat and environment interaction, and some modifiability.
A question: im a big Elder scrolls series fan i love to read about the lore and the history of the world, i like to do what ever i want it the world and i like that you have no limitation in Skyrim,Oblivion and morrowind. should i buy Divinity: Original Sin 2 according to my prefrance? and does this game have no limitation as The Elder Scrolls games? and does this game have a big lore and history? Thank you (Sorry for my bad english)
But i still dont understand, why do you go in one way if you can get more xp from trying all solution? For example in fort joy i can escape from the fort easily after i freed the elf in the kitchen, why should i escape so early if i can slaughter the entire magister in the fort and escape with the kid and his boat below the dungeon? It will get me more xp to do so right? its kinda kill the immersion for me
Because its more fun to play through the game at a lower level perhaps, more challenge that way? I never felt like I was under leveled in any playthrough or approach, but maybe thats just me
If you have OCD this game is a nightmare. I get it that you can't do everything in one playthrough, but personally if I miss or kill someone that could've been saved I want to go back and redo everything. The journal isn't helpful either, it just records your progress.
The journal route is far more interesting and engaging than the standard quest marker/ follow the arrow route most games take. + it prepares and readies you for the outside-the-box thinking the game encourages
That's not the problem I have with direction in DOS2, and I don't feel lost, either. And trust me, I am a huge Dark Souls fan, I don't want arrows and maps in my game. It's just that there are some quests that need to be done in a very specific order if you want to get the happy ending. For example, there is a red ball you can get in the dungeons of Fort Joy, and you can use this ball to pacify some dogs inside the torture chambers. One of them is Emmie, and you can help Emmie reunite with her friend Buddy - a dog near a cave outside at the beach. However, you have to talk with Buddy first, but Buddy will not tell you what troubles him if you have the cat around so, the only way to do this is to escape Fort Joy (so that the cat turns into a summon) and then go back for Emmie. BUT, for whatever reason, when you go back, the pacified dogs will be aggressive towards you and you have no other choice but to kill Emmie. This dickery occurs with almost every quest. And there is no way to know because the journal doesn't tell you anything you haven't done already. It may not be a huge deal for some, but if you want to roleplay and be who you want to be you need to know what the hell you're doing.
Near perfect game, but I gotta say, the inventory management could really do with some improvement. Having items and skills automatically updating and moving about on your action bar is a real pain and switching between action bars doesn't feel very practical. You can very easily get distracted and waste a lot of time trying to organise everything only to see it get messed up again...
GenXRanter except that blowing some quests is unavoidable when they are broken. There is a better continuation/conclution for some quests that exists outside of Fort Joy, but when you leave the fort they are marked as failed. Every mother's nightmare is one of them.
This year has seen a lot number of prime GOTY candidates. First there was Nier: Automata with its unique story telling and awesome action then there was Horizon: Zero Dawn with its awesome graphics and good story, suddenly Zelda: BOTW to show everyone how to make a great open world adventure game came to join, Then another masterpiece in Persona 5 who didnt want to be left out and showed how that the classic turn based RPG are not dead and now this game Divinity: Original Sin 2 came out of nowhere to be the torch bearer of epic RPG Games genre. That doesnt ignore the fact that there are other GOTY worthy games out there like RE7, Nioh, Injustice 2 and those that are upcoming like Super Mario Odyssey, Shadow of War, etc. Best year we had in gaming in this generation.!
For GOTY yes, but comparing them in any other way is stupid as they arn't even in the same genre. BOTW is an adventure game, DOS2 is a turn based CRPG.
I would be a little bit more harsh on this game after finishing it in a 170 hour gameplay. First, after almost an year we still have unfinished quests that just wont close for some people for no apparent reason, even following guides, for example the one when the red prince takes the eggs, all added chapter after chapter i must have 10-12 quests unfinished. Second, the lack of REAL variety in skills, just check the wiki and see the number, after your gameplay you are going to notice that certain skills are essential for harder difficulties while a great number is borderline useless, magical spells have huge cooldowns which means you are barely able to cast the same spell twice in a combat (which limits a pure pyro/geo/aero style, you gonna have to mix and even then have idle turns where you just dont have anything meaninfull to do), the armor system makes mixed parties very hard to play and physical damage is very superior to magical damage in numbers and resistance, summoning and necromancy need a serious rework for variety even with how necromancy is op (because of 3 spells). Third, from level 15 onwards the scalling of equips becomes ridiculous, the difference in damage and protection between lvl 19 equips and lvl 20 is enormous, initiative becomes very important and enemies become sponges or armor with some reaching 10-12k armor in each type. Fourth, the last part of the game is just rushed, anti-climatic and let you down compared to the other acts, Arx is a city with very little content, quests and badly designed, you have 3 important quests for lvl 20, guess what happens? You arrive there at 19 too weak to tackle any of those and after finishing 2 you are too strong for the third, you did reach the time of the game where you could relax a bit with gear since it takes a lot to level up but the game ruins it giving too much xp in any fight to make up for the lack of encounter is this last act, for real, ONE enemy gives more xp than the reward for completing any quest, you are powerfull, have your build the way that you wanted but have nothing to do because Arx sucks. Fifth, in the last fight you either cheese it or becomes stuck reloading for hours AND then dicide to cheese it lol there is no middle ground, you gonna have to use the op spells and try one-shoting groups of people otherwise people in your party is dying left and right with huge AOES the enemy spreads across the battlefield, which is sad imo even if i did play in a higher difficult. Crafting is underwhelming, resources are very scarce and not renewable and you are not going to craft plenty of useful stuff like GOOD potions (because it requires too many resources and the game cant provide much since mobs and nodes dont respawn) and armor(crafting for armor is almost non existant). This game is a masterpiece, yes, but will let you down after some time playing and you understanding how some things could have been done differently so easily.
Incredible RPG, TRUE RPG. Not just random action adventure game pretending them-self as RPG which is what the 99% of the gaming industry nowadays is about. Choices in every turn, choices in every conversation, that's what RPG suppose is about; not predefined sets of only few major branches. True, the characters are amazing with personalities. If anything, I just wish there will be interaction between party members update in the future; Sebille should be not the bestie with Ifan for example (because... spoiler, duh haha), they might be pissing each other off during your journey and you trying to cool them down or else face the consequences...
I'm playing DOS on ps4 and watching this review wishing and hoping for another console port. I honestly have to fight myself to turn it off, divinity original sin series ain't no joke. 11/10!
Missed out mentioning a MASSIVE feature of the game that adds a ton of value. LAN/P2P/SplitScreen and bots - It just enhances party role playing with partners even more. Many AAA publishers remove these to push live services on everyone.
Bethesda, Bioware...look at this. THIS is an RPG, not what ever watered down shooter action adventure shite your tried to pass off as an RPG with Fallout 4.
Agreed. Bethesda should bring back the RP in their next RPG. As for bioware, i think they have to learn their lesson from the failures of letting a B-team create one of gaming's biggest properties.
Watching this at work makes me feel something inside my guts clawing to get out. I can hear something telling me to take a sick leave tomorrow and play this masterpiece all day long
GOTY and One of the greatest rpgs of all time, simply a wonderfully crafted masterpiece. Already have 130+ hours on the game, it is a blast in solo and coop. Not to mention this is the best representation of turn based combat of all time. The writing is vastly improved over Original Sin 1 to which a nice surprise. There is a reason I buy anything Larian does, they started off with Divine Divinity which was an underrated classic, then some decent work on Divinity 2.. but boy did they find there gold mine when they started work on the Original Sin series! Part 1 did so many things right but somehow Larian managed to improve every aspect of the first game, turned a great game with the first one into a masterpiece for part 2! Best rpg since Witcher 3 or New Vegas!
I bought this game but haven't played it yet due to how much I liked the first one, but im glad to see so many 9/10s, 10/10s all over the place. Sitting at a 94 on metacritic, Damn. Wow, its the 8th highest rated game on PC. Got damn, you KNOW Larian is feeling REAL good about this game. The whole team must be breaking out the Champaign right now.
If I may, that was a fantastic review. Isometric RPGs aren't as popular as they once were, but I can't imagine anyone not wanting to at least try this after watching this. Since games such as this one are such a niche, you really HAVE TO explain what it's about and what makes it so great(which you succeeded in), because you know a 3rd person action RPG as deep as this would get people's attention 5 times faster. I used to be in that majority, who ignored these games, but now I'm gonna buy Original Sin 1 on PS4, while I wait for Larian to port this.
It's a "Classic" in any Genre. A 10/10 though? On release there were a few bugs and stuff but some of them have been sorted, some not! It's an amazing game though, RPG fan or just a fan of playing PC Games, doesn't really matter. It's that good. (IMO) I'm over a 100 hours in, GameSpots "70 Hours" is if you really rush and miss a ton of quests and Story Lines.. I've came up against bugs for sure, I've came up against puzzles that I had no idea how to solve 😁 It's great!!! But!! It can be very tough, I mean really tough, you might die...A lot!!!!! If you are in any doubt, just try it on Steam for 119 minutes and if you don't like it, get a refund. It's just one of the best games I've ever played!! Sure, it still has a few minor bugs and a 10/10 is perfect and it really isn't...It is almost though...👍But, I do understand that score, the game is just so much fun and way, way better than 99% of so called AAA titles. 9/10 for me and the best PC game released this 2017. Love it! 😍 Hope that helped you to make a decision!
2017 set a new bar for future games I really hope Pillars of Eternity 2, Elder Scrolls VI and any other RPG/open world will take features from games like Divinity 2, Persona 5 and Breath of the Wild for story, characters, mechanics and world.
I feel like this is going to be good. I rarely play games, but when I do, I sink hours. I'm coming from 500+ hours in The Witcher 3 and this seems to be the only thing that can get close to that feeling of sheer beauty. I AM getting this.
I have a confession to make: Larian Studios is quite easily the most polarizing developer I've ever seen. I've played ALL their games and this is what it comes down to: Divine Divinity: LOVE IT. Easily the best dungeon crawler I've ever played. Beyond Divinity: OK-ish. Divinity 2: F.U.C.K. YOU! Wanna know why? Two words: THE ENDING. Divinity Dragon Commander: Lovely. I just adore the characters, the excellent writing and the setup. Sadly, the RTS element is bone-dry brute force. Divinity Original Sin: Ugh...Tedious pacing, lack of direction, unbalanced difficulry and an utterly generic, aimless plot. But I did love the idea of creating 2 protagonists with their own personalities. This game: "slow clap" You magnificent bastards...
One of the best games ever. It would be more extra epic if the cut scenes were animated/cgi though, not some moving pictures but still a perfect 10/10.
People should read some of the negative reviews on Steam. There are plenty. And they are very mature and honest and more detailed than some of the overly-hyped-positive reviews. Having reading them I don't think the game is a 10/10 as they said. Also read some people talking about issues with story and not knowing where to go and getting lost. I still want to try this game. Hopefully coop. But it might be too big to coop.. I really want to try that though.
Now this is a game that brings new or more wider, new and further gaming of what we have these days. It's more fun to explore and surely brings people interested to try.
I prefer playing this with two characters instead of four using the lone wolf perk. Less character maintenance and more story focus. No matter how you go this is a no-brain buy for any PC player.
OH MY GOD YOU KILLED BUTTER!!!!! YOU MONSTER! on a more relative note, i am going to be very sad once i finish this game. I really can't wait for more in the future.
Took me 80 hours just to finish tutorial Island and said to everyone i know Whata masterpiece this really is.. then after the Island it even got even more masterful.. words can't describe how good this game really is! Hope bigger companys learn from Larian and Cd prodject red
I'd love to see Larian use this engine and make a Superhero game. Not Marvel franchise.. but something more of their own. Marvel would be ok too though. I'm thinking more like what Freedom Force did but more of a serious gritty world. This engine is perfect for that though.
