This is without a doubt one of the best games I've played... Review of Larian Studio's Divinity: Original Sin 2. Divinity 2. Original Sin. Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition Review (2020). Larian Studios.
I must say this is one of the most convincing game reviews I have seen in a while, without spoilers. Wasn't really into turn-based game myself, but Divinity Original Sin 2 changed my mind. There is so much depth in the game, and I don't regret getting it. Your analysis and objective review was spot on. Thanks for doing it justice
If you liked the turn based style of games I highly recommend you check out persona 5 or persona 5 royal. Both versions are great but there’s way more content in royal. The og game was over 150 hours long lol
D:OS2 is coming to iPadOS this year or next. It was supposed to get released December 2020 but delayed. Also Alien Isolation is coming to iOS this year
@ Kickass Eh, the shooting combat in Alien Isolation on iOS may not be suitable for most people but it’s still nice on iOS either way Just letting you know the info
I'm at about 370 hours. Beat the game 4 times now. Found a party of 4. Start the game from the beginning and one of the guys was spitting out some strategies and I was thinking "why did i never think of such strategy. This is brilliant!" Just when you thought you knew everything there's still more to learn.
I got spoiled with action RPGs, and lost my interest in turn based RPGs. I use to be into turn based RPGs, my favorite was FF:Tactics. But decided to come back to turn based, to see if I still had some interest, and Divinity OS2, got be right back into turned based RPGs. It's a game on a whole another level of greatness.
@ Darrel Well you’ll be happy to hear D:OS2 is coming to iPadOS this year or next. It was supposed to get released December 2020 but delayed. Also Alien Isolation is coming to iOS this year
Rpg fans do it's just not a major genre and most of the attention goes to AAA "rpgs" that are really more deserving of a title like cpg character playing game. The fact is most people who say "I love rpgs" hasn't ever touched a real rpg a shame but reality
I just started playing this week and I absolutely love this game. I had reservations as well. I didn't think I'd like the turn-based combat or the isometric top-down view. Boy was I glad I gave it a chance. I'm slowly discovering stuff, playing blindly and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite RPGs ever. It actually makes me want to try out Pillars of Eternity, Baldur's Gate and Pathfinder.
What a great video. What made it great was your absolute sincerity, it was like you were talking to a friend who was thinking of making a bad decision and you were warning him not to do it based on your previous experience of doing the very same thing. Wonderful approach!
You are absolutely correct my friend this game is a hidden LEGENDARY gem of a game and more people need to know of it so KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MY MAN and also greetings from Puerto Rico.
The turn-based combat system honestly wasn't an issue for me, since I grew up with pokemon, and I like the thought of "planning out" complex moves. I was more uncertain about the medieval themes, since I tend to prefer sci-fi and futuristic rpgs like Mass Effect. But I absolutely love this game.
I randomly picked this game up one day and instantly fell in love with it. Which is weird because I typically play fps games but recently one of my friends got me into d&d and this game is very much like a d&d campaign. The story telling is masterful, the dialog is actually interesting and gets you involved enough that you'll be going up to every single character you can to see what they have to say. And if you get the pet pal talent you can talk to animals and even they have amazing and sometimes hilarious things to tell you. Honestly this game is probably the best RPG I've ever played. I'd say it's right next to fallout new vegas and I am probably going to spend at least several hundred to possibly a few thousand hours playing it. I unfortunately only have it for switch right now but I'm probably going to get it on computer as soon as I can afford a decent one.
Ok... fun facts, "Divinity 2" is a completely different but very real game. Also, this game did so well the developer has been given actually Bulder's Gate level D&D rights. BG3. Finally, Original sin 1 is the real underrated gem nobody talked about.
@@Mendoza-yi6qk I sort of agree. Its ultimate jank, but still a truly fantastic game. Imo. Even vanilla Skyrim doesnt let you become a real dragonborn.
You read my mind. Skyrim and the Witcher are my favorite RPG's and I was worried about the turn based combat. About 25 hours in and boy I was wrong. Absolutely amazing game...btw I am playing the definitive edition on Xbox one
Turn based combat had made me do a complete U turn I can’t look past that one fact I’m so fucking disappointed that they would destroy such a great game with that shit combat man absolutely devastated.
@@themuffinlord6442 It's probably better, I haven't played much turn based combat games in a long time but I'm starting to long for one, and might pick this game up. Playing brainless action has gotten boring, tried skyrim recently but I wasn't a fan of the combat
Although The Witcher 3 is a great game (More open world than pure RPG IMO), many people fall into the trap of "If it's not AAA quality I'm not interested" and miss a vast amount of games that would make many of those games look like amateur in compassion. DOS 2 is one of the best RPGs of this generation and not many people heard of it, I hope more people buy Baldur's gate 3, wich look to surpass what this game already achieved
was playing disco elysium the other day.. and sure its good.. but when playing any rpg i always instantly come back to divinity. its grips me unlike anything, i started playing and before i knew it 8 hours passed and the sun was about to come up. no other game does this to me.
Couldn't agree with your more, Avarti. I absolutely loved Divinity Original Sin 1 and love II even more. Fantastic Plot with deep character development, wonderful voice acting, and the fact that the FX/graphics support the story and game play rather than *being* the driving force of this game puts it well above most RPGs. I am not a fan of Turn based games BUT Larian did it so right I can't see it it done in any other way. You really need to employ smart tactics Your moral/ethical choices make significant and lasting impact on the game not only via your actions but in dialogue choices as well. I strongly suggest staring with the first game and then the second. If you have trouble as I did when I first tried this series just go to RU-vid or other sources to help you develop characters, etc. Keep in mind Larian did make some changes between 1 and 2.
I just got into this game myself, after passing up on it. I will say this though, turn based combat is definitely a nerd thing, which is probably why this didn't have the mainstream success of games like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim.
Great review of what I consider the greatest rpg ever. It's just master class in design and depth. It's a long game but nothing seems padded out. Everything is there for a reason. I can understand the arguments for other RPGs being the greatest but in my humble opinion it is without equal. Keep up the quality work. Subscribed.
"2020 will see some massive anticipated games released. From CP 77 to Last of us part II its sure to be another exciting year for gamers" That last part aged like milk XD
I've watching reviews and reading all the critics about this game because I was thinking about buying it and I wasn't really sure about that, but your video is definitely what I needed to take that step. I'm buying it right now! I'm sure I will not regret it :)
I've put only around a dozen or so (maybe less) hours in this game and I already love it! I can already tell it's going to be incredibly replayable because there are an insane amount of choices to be made and they don't seem trivial, I can imagine wanting to make completely different choices in subsequent play-throughs.
Over the last week I’ve been playing this game with my wife nonstop. Never thought I would like turn based combat but the strategy it adds to fighting is soooo much fun. If anyone is on the fence, just do it. Then give it some time to get used to and you’ll fall in love.
God I just bought it and tried it. Turn based combat is unbearable, it slowns down the game so much and creates frustration because its like playing Chess, you have to think 10 steps in advance and I spend more time crunching numbers and planning attacks then actually playing and enjoying the game. Great RPG elements but the turn based combat is unbearable.
@@lessdatesmoreonmyplates1457 sure takes some getting used to but I actually find myself enjoying it more than traditional rpgs. Not for everyone though.
@@lessdatesmoreonmyplates1457 why don't you try playing at a lower difficulty and just enjoy whatever abilities you'd lke to use; no one is forcing you to play the difficulty that forces you to think 10 steps ahead.
Im a competitive fps player, and, like you, i simply ignored this game because i was scared to throw money out the window. A friend of mine finally convinced me to buy it and we started a co-op, this was the most incredible fantasy rpg i played, i really invested into it and i love it.
August 2023 here, haven't got a PS5 yet, i just bought a copy of this game from gamestop's online store, haven't got it yet but i am so excited, heard Baldur's gate 3 is awesome and decided to give DOS2 a try.
This is definitely a game that you just have to play if you even like RPGs. its not fun to watch imo but wholly shit if it is an amazing game to play, it is the best rpg video game that feels like a pen and paper. Every choice has a weight to it and i love it so much
I just feel that with these types of games I'd rather play a real pen-and-paper RPG. Unless you don't have friends that are into it, D&D is just better. If you have played a pen-and-paper RPG please tell me what I'm missing - I could be wrong, to be honest.
i fell in love with turn based combat because of this game and now its crpg with turn base combat are some of my favorite genre of games. It just allows for so much depth and character building. Its really an amazing set up for games, recently i have been playing an indie title on pc called Stoneshard that has a really nice take on turn based thats basically real time its great, id love to see something like a fallout style callasic rpg use that style of gameplay
The same happened to me about DOS 2, I thought I wouldn't like it because of its turn-based combat but some friends picked it up and that made me decide to give it a chance, upon starting playing I got hooked in a way that I would play hours upon hours without realising that when I stopped playing it may have been 4 or 5 am and I had been playing all night, thankfully I got the game during summer.
I first watched this review over a year ago, Avarti convinced me to buy the game but at the time it was selling for £34 on steam - so I waited patiently for the inevitable steam sale. A few months later the steam sale was on and I purchased the game for £7. I am in the middle of playing the game and wow, it is amazing and lives up to everything Avarti said in this review. If it wasn't for this review the game would have gone unnoticed by me. I was stunned by the sheer amount of mods available for the game in Steam Workshop. On my first play through I've tried to have very few mods - one of them allows you carry as many items as you like without being encumbered which is nice. If any part of you if tempted to try the game - DO IT!
It warms my heart to see a zoomer discover and fall in love with a classic style RPG. I haven't played this one yet but have a mountain of them under my belt from back in the day. Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
I have never played a classic RPG before this game, but this one has me hooked and I plan on buying BG3 when it releases. These games are super fun on your own and even more so with friends. I’ve introduced 4 friends to the genre through this game who are all also in love with it now, us zoomers are trying to catch up 😂
Thank you for your review. I've discovered Divinity 2 a while ago and it has always played at the back of my mind, but I have never had the urge to purchase it as I am also not immediately attracted to turn-based RPG's. But Steam is now offering a very tempting discount and I am very much inclined to buy :) I've already listened to the OST several times on Spotify and it is indeed very beautiful.
I feel obligated to make this comment, i will buy it thanks to you. Videos like this that are born just from the sheer and sincere passion one have towards videogames are the ones that hit me the most, and yours is one of them. Thank you.
So in the past few years its been really hard for me to find a Story based game that I have any desire to finish. This game is a masterpiece. It is also one the BEST multiplayer experiences I have ever experienced.
@@ZeethK92 i would say to play it with friends. the best way to describe it is like dnd so its usually best with friends hell there is even a dnd mode called game master mode but with friends you get to have fun and make strategies and its always good times when you accidently oneshot one of your buddies
@@emantheheman3083 I originally did start it with my brother but I think that might have been the issue. He knew way more going in and I started to feel like I wasn't really doing anything. That may be why I wasn't really grabbed by the story come to think of it.
You gotta play with people who know what they are doing...and you may need to actually "TALK" to them. Communication in this game is so Important...I don't know why Nintendo did not put in voice chat for a game like this.
Your video did what you wanted to do all these years back Congrats. I saw this video about 6 month after it got uploaded , the game kept on my mind 2 years later , I found nothing to do and saw the game on sale and bought it , I am 30 hours in and I still don't know what the F I am doing other than having fun.
Thank you sir, i’ve been seeing this game for awhile now and you’ve convinced me to buy it, i’ll be trying it out tomorrow with my brother “since it’s split screen Co Op”. We’re huge D&D fans and were completely disappointed when Balder’s Gate 3 wasn’t going to be available for console for awhile. This’ll be a great substitute for the mean time!!!
Got 300h into the game, and follow their developer since long time ago.... Now I'm waiting they finish to autobuy baldru's gate 3 Ps: I'm a fan of dyd and old school rpg games
I bought this game the exact way you did with my friend, and found it to be the best rpg i had ever played. The amount of times this game made me REALLY think about what to say and what to do, holy shit, i love when games do that. Super excited for Baldur's Gate 3
No mention about the Co-op part of this. How does it work? Do you have to be four people or can two people share the control of two characters each? Are you stuck to the choice of the character and the rest is NPC? Like if we are two people playing, how does the dynamics of character control look/work like?
I appreciate you keeping spoiler free story and enjoy the way you reviwed👌👍 I really wish other reviews would stop spoiling the experience by saying what the story is about I search reviews to see if gameplay...graphics....sound and recommendations not full reveal of story Reviews should mention graphics... sound and gameplay And if the user enjoyed and would recommend the game Nowadays theres no more mystery of discovering an unknown world cause we know the story because reviewers reveal too much
I also recommend you pick up Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect series. Dragon Age is a very good fantasy story with great characters and some of the best followers period. While Mass Effect is a sci-fi action RPG if you are looking for RPGs like Skyrim but with better characters and overarching story, even the ending. And both have lore that rivals, if not surpase the Elder Scrolls.
I just recently finished replaying all three dragon age games, pure masterpieces. i bought inquisition when it first came out but never finished it - played it a few times over the years and still never finished it. i was blown away by the ending of the game and the final DLC
@@willowtree9709 Yep. Though I was speaking more for the individual games. I don't discount the fact that Mass Effect 3 ending generated more emotion from me then Skyrim ending ever did. Only the Shimmering Ilse did I feel a conclusion that was close to any of the Mass Effect trilogy.
Owned this game for about a year now. Not a turn based guy but always try. I get some decent downtime at work and these types of games are just perfect for that time. Restarted yesterday and am "starting" to get it for the first time. Glad I am because the story and choice options are amazing. I'd love to be able to dedicate some more time to getting into some old school turn based titles that have a good fun/story world.
I just bought this today. I normally stay away from CRPGs but I gotta say that this is actually an enjoyable experience. I don't feel rushed, and the story and dialogue is like reading a high fantasy novel. It's very enjoyable and relaxing to play
It's funny that you talked about the Witcher at the start of this video. I just returned the entire Witcher series and with that money bought DOS 2. I've heard DOS 2 can be very hard buy I'm pumped and ready for the ride.
@@lessdatesmoreonmyplates1457 I actually like it to be honest. It’s rather intricate and strategic. Evokes that tabletop rpg feeling games like this are meant to.
Currently playing DoS2, enjoying it immensly, but it is very intense. I can handle 2-3 hours at the time, after that I get overwhelmed. Then I go to Skyrim just to wonder around. Have played Enderal? It has some depth in the story and you get very attached to npc's.
I started Rpg's back in Baldurs Gate times. Pretty much used to turnbased. Good review about one of my longtime favorite games. And still... did xou manage to bring Emmie and Buddy back together? 😉
I picked up the divinity original sin 1 game back in 2014 and just after roughly an hour of gameplay, I uninstalled the game despite how good the graphics is. This is because turn-based combat really put me off at that time. BUT, now that I'm 30 and with your recommendation, I might just give this game another try. This time I'm gonna focus more on the story rather than the gameplay. I just subscribed to you because I like your style of review. Keep it up mate!
So there is a steam sale going on atm. Me and my friend have been playing supreme commander 2 a lot, which is a strategie game. And i love to think about how i will defend my base where should i invest my points in and which area (air, land or sea) is going to be the best to use for offense. i also played fire emblem three houses. I am a bit new to strategie games but i really like it. RPG's and visuale novels are both genre's i really like. This game was recommended for me, and i was pondering over whether i should play it or not, but i think you have convinced me :) Though i will look up a few more other game reviews of diffrent games before i make my final decission :p
Been thinking about this game randomly for months. Just bought it tonight. I'm definitely going to take my time and see of it'll consume me lol. Thanks for the push.
Biggest issue with this game to me is there not enough party chatter like there was in dragon age series, you have party members who hate each other and through your adventures you hear interesting stories, funny insults and stuff. In this game there very quiet, they only talk with certain key events happen, but other then for most of the quest it really quiet.
DOS2 is my gold-standard for how to implement multiplayer in an RPG. The first time I played it with my friends was probably the most fun I have had with any video game... ever. If I could delete my memories of my first play-through and experience it again for the first time with my friends I would do so, that is how good it is. Not flawless (the balance is a bit whack, when you min-max you become pretty much unbeatable by the end of act 2), damn amazing. And all the little quality of life changes are what makes it (multiplayer especially) such a treat.
I'm here after spending 20 hours in wasteland 3 my first ever turn based rpg I've experience. Playing wasteland has opened my eyes to these type of games and I'm already having my eyes set on this after wasteland 3. Great review btw! Makes me get so hyped
@@randomguy6679 very fun. The dialogue and writing is pretty darn great. Only legit gripe i have is it was a bit buggy here and there at launch but they put some quick patches up since
Wow, that's some high praise comparing it to The Witcher 3, my favourite role-playing game of all time. I've been looking to get through some games I missed before Cyberpunk comes out, and just finished through Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 (after seeing Avowed), which I really enjoyed. Today I see Divinity: Original Sin games on sale on Steam, so I will buy these two and play them, since they are highly recommended.
The combat might not be my cup of tea, but everything else you mentioned definitely makes me want to try it out, I'm gonna stop that mod for skyrim I was downloading and get on with the dl for this game lol
Hm, I didn't know it was not a well known game, because back when it came out everyone I know was playing it. I only started playing recently and after 20 hours I am totally in love with this game :D it so good, the combat, the characters, the voice acting, the music it just comes together so well!
