I love Chrissy's powerful, husky, slightly sultry voice and how it almost breaks into a yodel. My favourite from the Divinyls is 'Pleasure and Pain'. Chrissy came across as a 'bad girl'. Ironically she had a cousin, also in the music business, who had a softer voice and a squeaky clean image. She looked a bit like the actress, Sandra Dee. Chrissy's cousin was 'Little Pattie' who began by singing surf culture sugary- sweet songs as a very young teenager.

Barney, up early and in fine voice again. I have to admit, as a spotty teenager, I might have had a bit of a crush on Little Pattie which I later transferred (like Monkey Pox) to Chrissy. I was going to say Bird Flu but MP is more topical. Anyway, keep it up, you're doing us proud.

@@mrmockatoo6786 I was never an admirer of LP as I didn't think she had much talent. She's not my kind of bird. It was pleasing to hear Stevie Wright compliment we birds in his audience before singing, 'Friday On My Mind,' on the Thamesmen reaction/s which I'm enjoying. However I was aghast that John Farnham was not included in the first week and hooted loudly about that! Have you heard The Teskey Brothers? I'm flying off to the bush tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing lots of different birdsong.

Agreed. Losing her was a major loss to music. If I could go back in time and see only 1 band, The Divinyls--with her out front--would probably be my choice. And I'd want it to be in one of the more modest clubs before they hit big where her presence would be up close and raw.

I'm so glad to have grown up in Australia in the '80s and '90s. The funny thing is we kind of took our music for granted. We loved and supported it, but it never occurred to me that it was anything different from what was happening in other countries. Now, 30-40 years later, it's amazing to realise how great and punk-y a lot of our "mainstream" hits were.

You're right, Aus pub rock in the 80's was it's own breed of music, and so accessible. All these great bands (and there are still so many you haven't heard of ) played regularly at the big pubs and clubs in the city and inner city suburbs, we got up close and personal with them all the time. The venues were all dark and smoky, with beer soaked carpets, but they all had a stage and a dancefloor and live bands every bloody night. What a time to be alive ay? Loving this, thanks so much guys.

The Sydney and Melbourne inner city pub scene was thriving in the 70s & 80s for bands. But, the audiences were brutally honest. So bands like the Divinyls came up through the pubs and only survived as an act by becoming very tight bands and really honing their craft before recording anything.

The 90s was a magic decade for Aussie music so maybe we could take a peek at some of that. No idea what’s coming last on this week though. Could be almost anything. You are right about the quality of music in Australia during the 80s. I think their “toughness” is emblematic of how the Bands cut their teeth. All made their mark on the Pub scene where they learnt both their musicianship and showmanship. Not too many females broke through the glass ceiling back then but Chrissy Amphlett was something special.

I remember doing an 18 hour shift and then instead of going to bed our neighbours said that the Divinyls were on in Brissie, so we got dressed up, went pub crawling and topped it off in the moshpit rocking out to Chrissie and the boys...then went back to work for another long shift. Those were the days. A week 3 Aussie week would be sooo easy, so a few suggestions - The Screaming Jets 'Better' or 'Helping Hand', Dragon "Rain", Noiseworks 'No Lies' or "Take Me Back', Divinyls again with "I Touch Myself" or 'Pleasure and Pain', Australian Crawl 'Boys Light Up', Mondo Rock 'Come Said The Boy'. Great critique again boys.

Chrissie and Mark had a love for early rock acts, so they released a few covers over the years, including The Troggs’ Wild Thing, The Easybeats’ I’ll Make You Happy, and Syndicate Of Sound’s Little Girl (Changed to Hey, Little Boy). They were a rock act, for sure, but Boys In Town is the pumpingest one of the lot. I’d recommend pretty much any of their early releases, especially watching the videos to see Chrissie performing. Only Lonely, Science Fiction, Pleasure And Pain are all staples of rock radio here. I also like their version of Young Rascals’ I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore that they did for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie soundtrack, and once you’ve gotten through that then check out I Touch Myself if you haven’t already heard it. As for the last Aussie Week song, I’m guessing Stevie Wright’s Evie Parts 1, 2, & 3. although there could be a ridiculous number of contenders. Definitely recommend an Aussie Week 3. I’m happy to put a list together but I’m sure you’d have a bunch of suggestions anyhow. Glad you liked it. One thing I’d also recommend if you want to get an insight into how music developed here in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, a great documentary is one you’ll find on RU-vid called Blood + Thunder: The Sound Of Alberts, which is really the genesis of acts like The Easybeats, AC/DC, The Angels (aka Angel City), Rose Tattoo, John Paul Young, and more. It definitely helped create and promote a raw, visceral rock sound and attitude in bands and pubs that helped define our Aussie rock sound.

Their whole catalogue is first class a truly hypnotic talent - this is one of my faves along with "human on the inside", "make out alright", and "I'm on your side" and "sleeping beauty".........they also did a superb cover of "ain't gonna eat out my heart"

Why most overseas hasn’t heard of all the great music we had down here was the record companies at the time were more interested in promoting the talent they had - even getting the rights to some Australian songs and using them to promote their own talent. A classic example is John Farnham’s Your the Voice. The American head office of Johns record company felt the song would be a hit sung by some female band in the US ( no idea who they were but obviously it failed miserably) The UK did the same .Artists had to actually move to the US and the UK . It wasn’t till there was a bloke that came on the scene called Michael Gudinski that bands like INXS actually charted overseas without someone else singing their songs. It happens a little less now but at the time most of our artists in the 80’s and 90’s were stymied by the parent company they were signed with in both the UK and the US.

RIP Chrissie Amphlett. Saw them quite a few times in the Cross’ Piccadilly Hotel. Hands down the best frontperson of any band I have ever seen. Chrissie was the most intimidating person fronting a band, with her dark eyes under that fringe, you did not want her to look your way.

I knew the Guitarist, Mark McEntee - he used to be in a family members band - in the 70's he studied Jazz guitar at the Sydney Con - I never heard any of it in their music. I recall meeting him at the park one day where he was flying his remote controlled Aircraft. Chrissie used to freak out the young Teenage audience girls when she'd squat down on stage in her St Trinians School Girl dress and take a piss ... yes literally ... hahahaha hahaha all while the band was playing during a song. When ya got to go ... she was rough and ready.

Chrissie's cousin was Little Pattie a 1960's surfie chick singing star - known for "He's My Blonde-Headed Stompie Wompie Real Gone Surfer Boy" and "Stompin' at Maroubra" [Mar- oo- bra] a Sydney beach, was a hit when she was 14. She was one of the singers who went to entertain the troops in Vietnam. Most people didn't know the connection between the two until after the Divinyls were big. And yes the whole world mourned Chrissie - their "I Touch Myself" was used in breast examination and breast cancer awareness campaigns all over. Have checked in an you two quite a bit but now my sub list is that much longer - have just added you because of your music knowledge and intelligent breakdown of artists and careers. Cheers from Oz gents!

Love your channel. The 80s was a golden era for Australian music - I was in the UK 89-93 and missed that 3rd sound after Brithish and US music. Hunters & Collectors, Icehouse, Hoodoo Gurus, Gang Gajang among others you have yet to discover and perhaps my favorite The Go-Betweens 'Finding You' from 2005 among my favorites or 'Bye Bye Pride' from the 80s

Chrisy grew up in Geelong. Her first gig was when she was 17. She didn't have a costume to perform in, so she took to the stage in her school uniform. it went down a treat with the audience but not so much with the school. A true Aussie ledged.

I’m happy to say I had the pleasure to see this incredible band many times Chrissy always put in 100% every time. The truth about Britain and America didn’t get to discover Aussie bands was mainly due to government control of media where local content was implemented So Australia missed out.

Yes - please do a week 3! My list: Everlovin' Man by the Loved ones (they only had one album, but super super super influential), Because I love you by Masters Apprentices (hugely iconic Australian song); I hear motion by Models; Flame Trees by Cold Chisel; Baby Please don't go by AC/DC (the version played lived on Countdown - it made them overnight stars, you'll see why when you watch it); Black and Blue by Chain; Beds are burning by Midnight Oil; Sweet sweet love by Russell Morris; LIttle Ray of Sunlight by Axiom. But if you only do one of these, Everlovin' Man. Just ask Chris about Everlovin' Man (also ask him about ACDC's performance on Countdown).. There is not one other single song that sounds anything like it. It is the perfect intersection of pop / rock / blues. And THANK YOU for doing the Divynals. Chrissy was amazing. Hey Little Girl is a great fun.
