The hardest thing to understand in all of this is why the US and the UK haven’t linked past support for Israel to the cessation of new settlements. At this point the chances of a 2 state solution have been whittled away in broad daylight.
@pw323
@pw323 8 месяцев назад
As an American, I have always suspected our leadership is in line with the Israeli government’s unofficial policy of paying lip service to a 2-state solution while quietly making it untenable. The Jewish population is outnumbered by Palestinians so these bouts of killings level the ground so to speak. The US has positioned itself in a tricky spot - protect its military and economic interests in the Middle East through Israel, while appeasing Arab countries enough that they don’t retaliate with inflated oil prices or oil supply shortages. I should also point out the Jewish community in America holds quite a bit of clout in our politics and academia. As for the UK’s stance, I always assumed it stemmed from an unnecessary sense of guilt over its historic role in how this conflict came about.…? Christian Zionism started in England and has since spread to the US. Regardless, I imagine Bibi couldn’t care less about what either of our countries think.
@John1873--
@John1873-- 8 месяцев назад
We probably need to have some real honest conversations about this, from the West's perspective. Having a "vassal" state in the middle east is extremely convenient for us in the West... It won't take much for this to be portrayed as a calculated geopolitical move... We need to get serious about a peaceful solution... but I really don't know if that's even feasible with each of the governments involved in this.

The Likud Party charter uses near identical language about the River and the Sea, but for complete Israeli control.
@jonathanrotem251
@jonathanrotem251 8 месяцев назад
After reading your comment, I read the Likud charter. Extremely different from Hamas', chapter B is the chapter discussing the party's values. It includes democracy, minority rights (inluding race, sexual orientation, conscience, etc) "true peace with our neighbors", free market capitalism, a welfare state, preserving Jewish traditions, and more. It does mention "complete" terrirorial integrity, but this is rather ambiguous, since Israel never annexed the west bank, and the Likud government itself left Gaza in 2005. No calls for genocide against Arabs (like the call for genocide against Jews in the Hamas charter). In short, comparing a center-right party in a liberal democracy to an Islamic terrorist organization is wrong.
@laylah150
@laylah150 3 месяца назад
@jonathanrotem251 Genuine question, have you actually read either the first or second Hamas' charter? Because all they say is abolishing Israel. Which they believe was wrongfully founded on their land. They make qualifiers about protection for arabic jews, and extend this to european jewish immigrants who wish to live in peace with them. You can disagree with someone or their idealogy but atleast have the integrity to honestly represent their position.

Friend, I think that used to be true, but now the term “settler” covers ~750k Israelis, the majority of whom are Mizrahi refugees from Islamist regimes. As you may know, in recent years many Muslim nations in MENA region became inhospitable to Mizrahis. They bought land in Israel legally, from their perspective. Very frustrating, though not entirely surprising, how this conversation proceeds. Israel again and again discussed as an essentially reasonable actor which must be held to account and kept to international law, whilst any and all independent watchdogs have chartered their continuous failure to do so for at least three decades. The ruthless killings and destruction of all civil infrastructure by Israel being discussed not primarily as in itself an unforgivable, historic misdeed, but primarily as a tactical error because, after all, it will foment anti-israeli sentiment in the region and to some extent the global community. What is the very worst thing that could happen to israel if it is successfully besieged by all its neighbors? Surely the very worst outcome would be for it to face what gaza is facing right now. With the caveat that, unlike gaza, israel has resources and defences like the iron dome and bomb shelters. And yet that improbable prospective seems to carry more weight in the discussion than the facts on the ground in gaza yesterday, today and tomorrow. Israeli lives are once again held in higher esteem than Palestinian ones. As for Campbell measuring the leadership potential of a politician not by their vision for a sovereign nation's stance but by their willingness to kowtow to U.S. interests, well, at least it's very on-brand, isn't it?

It's sad that Alistair can't seem to put aside his apologist cap when it comes to Labour positions, even when it's the right thing to do. Rory is able to speak for himself, whether ot not his views will be shared or popular with his former party or the mainstream. I listen to this podcast knowing in advance that this will be the case because I believe it's important to know what ideologues on the other side of the issues will be saying. I don't want to be found guilty of living in an echo chamber, refusing to listen to people with opposing opinions, but I find myself groaning with frustration at Alistair's invevitable towing of the line on the most important issues that require moral leadership. Demanding a ceasefire is almost always the right position to take when it comes to the Middle East, and the current incarnation of the conflict is no exception. The fact that your possible future relationship with the US might be at odds because you differ on this point is a feckless reason to abandon calls for peace.

Not that NATO didn’t bomb the holy crap out of the general infrastructure anyway, killing plenty of civilians in the process. Apart from the forced deportation of Palestinians to death camps like Treblinka. Apart from forbidding the practice of religion on pain of death. Apart from the considerable difference in the fact that Israel is a democracy and is internationally accountable, within a global western ideology. Apart from the fact that the West is not at war with Israel.

AI ability to do great things with NHS data is hampered by the abysmal quality of that NHS data - sure detecting cancers, or similar are ideal areas, but more general application will be hugely difficult because the lack of investment and standardisation of information (yes worked with NHS data), Police date by contrast would be interesting. The irony of the AI summit at Bletchley given the treatment of Alan Turing! Sunak's flirting with Musk at the AI summit seems to be all about what he will be doing after he leaves No.10. And as to the wider issue of controlling AI, what seems to be misunderstood by many is that AI is plural, and the AI horses have long since bolted, and what AI is and is not is blurred and will be very difficult to define from a legislative standpoint (yes, worked with AI - but it's nicer in the woods)

In a future podcast, could you address Hamas’s 2017 charter? I didn’t understand it. It seems to say that it will respect the 1967 borders but also says from river to sea Palestine will be free, like the slogan that’s repeated so much in recent weeks. Either way it looks like Isrsel never accepted that update to the 1988 Charter. I would like to better understand what Hamas stands for and what their charter or goal is (prior to Oct 7th and now, if different). Is it the abolition of Israel? Is it against ALL Jews or just Jews in Palestine? Is it’s problem the Jewish faith or just the Israelis who are occupying Palestine (to whatever borders they regard Palestine to be)? The Israeli ambassador recently said at the UNSC that « Hamas Nazis » are trying to rid the world of all Jews, ie trying to implement a genocide of Jewish people like the Nazis did with their « final solution » and holocaust. While Hamas ‘s Oct 7 attack is a terrorist attack, I had understood Hamas intention is to reclaim Palestinian land (and that I understood to mean all UN recognized Israeli lands as well as occupied Palestinians lands and essentially a return to 1947 borders) and not to recognize at all the state of Israel, but that there was no intention to remove Jews from those lands, or any lands beyond what they view as Palestine. It would be good to understand better the ´official’ stance of Hamas and has it veered much from the 2017 charter and update to 1988 charter? Also, where can we refer to to understand the Zionist charter? Or the ´Zionist Project’ (as referenced in Hamas 2017 charter)? And where would we refer to for the written charter or intention of the state of Israel (prior to Oct 7th)? I really don’t think the Israeli Ambassador should be using the phrase « Hamas Nazis ». Because Hamas are not members of the National Socialist German Workers' Party and I also don’t believe they’re trying to enact a « final solution » to rid the world of Jews as the Nazis were, and I don’t believe Hamas are trying to take over other countries , but rather just trying to get back lands that were Palestinian prior to 1948. That said, the 1988 charter actually did target all of Judaism and called on arabs, Islamic people and Palestinians alike to join in Hamas’s cause, using jihad. 2017 charter didn’t have those radical elements. So, I’m just trying to better understand who is trying to achieve what, and what they think the other side is trying to achieve. And better understand the difference between Hamas and the Palestinian people, and difference between State of Israel and Zionists. It seems complicated because for each ´side’ there may be what was stated in the past, what they state now, what they actually think and act upon, and then what the other side think they actually want/act upon. From what I can tell, the Israeli Ambassador’s comments to the UNSC would indicate he believes Hamas are following their 1988 charter. Is Israel completely ignoring the 2017 updated charter so they can continue a narrative that Palestinians support Hamas who wants to rid the world of Jews? To justify their actions and oppression of the Palestinian people for decades? I just don’t understand how the Israeli ambassador can say the things he said in the UN in regards to « Hamas Nazis » wanting final solution for all Jews , cos they seem completely inaccurate based on the 2017 updated charter: is that what they really believe or just a narrative to spin? Most of all I’d really like to understsnd what the 2017 charter actually meant because I was confused by it. Sorry for the long question but I really hope you read this and talk about this subject on your podcast! I do think it’s very important especially with so much recent use of the slogan « from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free »….is that really indicating support for Hamas terrorist acts? I’m not sure that anyone even knows what that means to different people…like I’m not sure if people réalise why they can be seen to be so inflammatory to some people who might think it’s pro-Hamas and condoning the acts of Oct 7th. So clarity on that would be very useful I think. Thank you! I really appreciate your podcast and so glad I found it.

The British public deplore what Israel is doing. The least Starmer can do is start talking about a ceasefire. How did we ever let Israel start invading Palestine and just say nothing. It let them see how far they can push which is apparently as hard as they want.

Commenting on Rory's point made at 47:40 Re: Starmer being in trouble with Muslim voters. In my opinion the approach to foreign policy that the next PM of Britain takes cannot, and should not, be defined or swung or influenced by a minority of the membership who have extremely fixed and rigid views on the current issue, and that utterly misalign with the approach that our key allies take. I think a large proportion, not all, of Muslim Labour voters seem to demand a stance on this issue that is impossible for Starmer to take. And they will not be likely to change their view on that because the issue is so deeply emotive for a lot of Muslims. For Starmer to potentially alter Britain's entire stance and position in the region simply to appease a minority rump of voters would be a long term mistake.

It's more likely the Al-Ahli hospital was hit by a missile from a drone. It's disingenuous not to say downright misleading, that there wasn't a crater large enough to be from an Israeli rocket. The Hermes 900s, made in Leicester, can carry munitions smaller than Israeli rockets.and were in operation all the time. Also, there was a tweet from Israel, soon deleted, that claimed Hamas members had been killed, just after the attack.
