Two men who’ve been at the heart of the political world - former Downing Street Director of Communications and Strategy Alastair Campbell and cabinet minister Rory Stewart - join forces from across the political divide.

The Rest Is Politics lifts the lid on the secrets of Westminster, offering an insider’s view on politics at home and abroad, while bringing back the lost art of disagreeing agreeably.

Why does Campbell go on about Brexit but seems to have forgotten about weapons of mass destruction. That killed thousands of civilians - british soldiers and David Kellys who refused to lie for Blair. As for NIgels he tells the truth were as Campbell is a compulsive liar that lined his own pockets just a slimmey has been that needs kicking into the grass. Zip it Campbell.

Hard to believe a Prime Minister did not realise the opportunity to look like a Statesman on that stage with all the other World Leaders. He could've looked like a serious individual if only for the period of the ceremony. The problem with Sunak though is he is not a serious politician, nor does he have conviction politics, and most obvious of all he is not a patriotic Brit. That is why he left, that is why he hid in the background on COVID when he should have been up there making waves about not locking down and not killing small businesses in the process, and it is why when he is booted out he will f@ck off to the USA as his friends say. You cannot fail to be touched by these memorial day events if you attend one. I went to Anzac Day in Sydney in 2011 because i was in Aus at the time and we were outside in the rain in the street all night for that. At no point did you think about leaving early, i'm not even Australian, but you cannot overstate the sacrifice those that fell, or returned made..

As someone who voted remain it frustrates the life out of me that Alastair never takes any accountability for how his labour government contributed to the anti-immigration and distrust in politics that in my opinion decided brexit. It is as if he thinks politics exists in a vacuum. The sooner he understands his own role the better

We are caught in this two party establishment construct. Conservative and Labour are two cheeks of the same arse. All of the MP’s are nothing more than self-serving idiots. You are being steered towards a Labour government now, but there will be no change. You will be calling for the head of the next establishment stooge within a very short space of time. Starmer IS the establishment!

Totally agree with what he says here and if you're not convinced, I'll ask a single question: what is there to stop a majority government extending its term to 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, indefinitely? The current 5 year term is set by the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022; any majority government can amend it to whatever it wants or abolish it entirely, and there is nothing legally that can prevent it doing that. Other countries have written constitutions precisely to guard against this kind of situation and set the basic ground rules that everyone plays by

far right rising and rising, Europe and US fertile ground for extreme politics as the world grapples with financial and environmental crises every month (environmental is going to drive population displacement incrementally each year)

Good episode as usual. Only thing to ask is why the word 'released' in regard to the hostages? - They weren't released, implying they were given willingly?

We vote green because we think Labour is playing to the right and we want them scared of losing to the left on climate, tax and electoral reform! The right has monopolised the media conversation for far too long.

You can tell she’s enormously competent, mature, and likely ruthless. Exactly the type of dedicated person you’d want at the head of a service like MI6.

Rory Stewart doesn't fully care or understand how any domestic non-British or paneuropean elections not in the UK work. European parliament elections are not perceived as domestic elections, but also they are seen differently in different EU countries. On the subject of governance: not every democracy is a parliamentary democracy. The US is a superpresidential and France is a presidential republic. They're differences... Meloni won elections in a parliamentary democracy and France is not one. Getting a relative majority in the parliament won't put your in the government per se.

I always enjoy this and even though Alastair Campbell has never held a political post & I see him as a spin doctor , just pointing the finger and should never take what he says literally I do find him thought provoking and he makes me think along a different line which is obviously a good thing. Rory Stuart’s knowledge is outstanding & I always lean something new… thanks guys 👍

that's a bad take from Alastair about why people might be voting for Greens "because the actual team [Labour] you want to win has already won". a lot of people will be voting to get rid of the Tories and will be voting for Labour as the best route to do that in their consituency but actuallly want to vote for Greens/Lib Dems (or Reform). If we didn't have a first past the post system and had proportional representation then people would be voting for who they really wanted, however as it is only Labour or Conservatives are going to win a majority so people end up voting tactically to get rid of the torries whilst they actually want to vote green. I'd certainly vote Green if I wasn't concerned about torries winning in my constituency. Labour have the best chance of winning here but Greens are way more in line with my policies, their wealth tax plans alone would make me vote for them. I don't know why Labour aren't implementing something like this after all the years of widening inequality and huge increases in the wealth of the richest people in the country (and beyond) off the back of massive UK government spending (borrowing) under the current (and previous to be honest) government.

Rory and Alister , watching from australia here, cost of living is so bad over here. Iv been watching so many videos here on RU-vid on poverty in Britain but excuse me it looks so bad in some of your northern towns. It looks like Britain before the First World War. How has this come about and what is the remedy.
