If you never want to fail then simply do nothing or copy what someone else has done. If you really want to learn, then try something that has not been done. Accepting that you sometimes will fail is the price of doing something worth doing.
“Seagulls, as you know, never falter, never stall. To stall in the air is for them disgrace and it is dishonor. But Jonathan Livingston Seagull, unashamed, stretching his wings again in that trembling hard curve-slowing, slowing, and stalling once more-was no ordinary bird.”

the 205 can be made to run just one driveshaft at a time or both. the slide rails can be ground to do this so you can provide power to the front or rear driveshafts or both at the same time like a regular 4wd system. You could add an electric motor on the front output shaft. That would give you backup propulsion for maneuvering in the event you can't or just dont want to start the engine. Sometimes you just need to move a little. Big engines dont like to be ran an shut back down before getting warmed up. So an electric option when you just need to set the anchor or move 50 feet over to the fuel dock saves wear on the engine. Using the prop to generate electricity wile sailing is also posible, not that you need it.

Just a quick thought/question for the orientation for the box itself. It was designed to operate level with the frame of a truck. With it inverted the gear oil may not get to the tapered bearing at the top. Might wish to think about mounting the box in a level-ish orientation instead of vertical like you had in the video. Food for thought.

I usually drill a hole into the broken bolt and beat an appropriate size Torx socket into the hole. If it rounds out the hole just beat the next size Torx socket into it. Sometimes I use an Allen socket if I don't have a close Torx size and when the Allen rounds out it'll fit the next Torx 👍🏻
@MonkeyWithAWrench
@MonkeyWithAWrench Год назад
Hey Doug, either box should work for your needs, I lean toward the 205 though due to the 200 being intended to be a dual offset. It will be a bit stronger. But for your PTO, both boxes support a feature known in the offroading world as a "Front Dig" that allows you to disconnect the rear output only and still let power through to the front output. This would be the setup you need to pump air with the main engine without driving the prop.
@philrogers1758

of coarse you have to keep the transfer case set up exactly like it was in the vehicle at the correct level so your filler plug dictates the correct oil level to the gears & bearings Also the drain plug at the lowest point

If you use the np205 you can “twin stick” it fairly easily. This give you the capability of controlling the front and rear outputs separately. This means you can have the cast in hi/low range on just the rear output, both or just the front output. Just not one in hi and one in low at the same time. This will allow you to run your air compressor off the front drive output without having the rear output engaged.

Look at the Spicer Double Cardan CV Head, if you need a short driveshaft. Also look at Giubo flexible rubber joint, not sure if those can handle the torque from your engine? Can install a generator on the transfer drive side, then charge your battery’s while under sail and not feathering the prop? Or while running the engine? Also you could use wheel lug studs that are serrated if you have clearance to install them on the Hundersted drive flange and then use nylock nuts instead of bolts.

@SV Seeker retired mechanic, spent 14 years in the condition monitoring and alignment game, sorry if it came across as a told you so, was meant to be a bit of tongue in cheek. The offset is really only an issue for the rolling elements in the bearing. You are dealing with high torque loads and spinning mass, going in and out of gear, loading and unloading. How much clearance is around the bolt and the hole in the coupling? Is there space to fit dowel pins to remove any movement of the coupling faces, as these types of coupling are normally thru bolted with the shoulders of the bolt taking the torque force and the threads just providing the clamping force.

In the spirit of unnecessary but delightful complication - if you're going to hook up the air compressor anyway, how about adding some pneumatics? Tim Hunkin just posted a video on the topic, might be more convenient than hydraulic or electric for some boat applications. If nothing else you could animate some of the sea dragons. (seriously though it does seem like pneumatics might be more approachable than hydraulics for some applications, would love to see someone explore the possibilities)
