This is brilliant and way cheaper than any chicken door out there Just an update I received my valve today installed it and it works great
@Rh0deIslandRed

I did this exact thing. I bought the linked valve switch and made the few mods and it works great. The only issue I had was the switch failed to work the second day. I tried it about ten times and it started working slowly, then fully. It is working now, but I'm probably going to replace it. It's a pain for me because I have to get inside of our tiny coop. But I don't want to find out that it failed when I really need it (when I'm away). Thanks for this post. It's not only at least 83% cheaper than all the packaged solutions out there, it is BETTER solution. For me, I already have a heavier wooden door in the channel. This works perfectly as a retro-fit without scrapping any existing parts or functionality. I was able to keep my existing manual string as a backup. And the Google Home integration is so much better than the simple timer. Shooting for 15 hours of daylight, I turn the light on 9 hours after sunset. But the door has to be closed or they chickens will just go outside in the dark when the light comes on. I'm going to follow you in case you post any other improvised solutions to anything. I love it. ru-vid.comL2pfQvRmlmM?si=B_AO-duliVQRnYZz

Thanks for the comment! Very good point about the added functionality over other devices! I love your design and how it is inside the coop! It looks like it works very well and operates smoothly. This is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find on my quest to automate my door. Thanks for sharing! I had an interesting system in my previous coop - I attached the roosting pole to a pivot with jugs of water attached to the other side matching the weight of my hens so when they all were on the roost it caused the door to close and then open again when one of them jumped off. Pretty nice, power-free system as long as all your hens sleep on one roosting pole.

I put auto doors on my two coops where I could set the clocks and really liked them. The other kind wouldn't have worked because there is flood light on a pole in the back yard. I did have to change the batteries several times a year, and once in awhile they'd malfunction. They all have their pros and cons. Even with the wifi ones isn't always the best option because when the internet or power goes down, none of them will work. I also put up Wyze cams inside my coops as well as in the corners of the run, so I'd have visual access from all angles. I, too, put up bird netting. That was a must. I'll have to try out what you did as well. It might be a good idea to have two doors, with one being a backup in case the other goes down. Thanks.

Thanks for the great idea. I tried a commercial opener before and it was flimsy so I had to return. I got this opener for $27 on Amazon and it works perfect now. I like the timer to schedule for open/close. I am using a piece of plywood (about 1x1 foot) for the door and am afraid the motor may not stand the weight in the long run. Thinking of finding some light material for it. I used a shower rod to attach the opener to my chicken coop and some trimmer line that was around for connecting between the opener and the door. So no extra cost.

Hi, thank you for this great idea, I used it to build an automatic door opener for the basement door (normal 90 ° house door ). We have a cat door on the outside door, but she often brings us presents, that i dont want in the house. She also often takes a nap in this room, and then is waiting for me to let her into the rest of the house. So I hooked up am older indoor wifi cam, to see if the cat is "alone" and didn't bring a mouse. Also, when she wants to go outside, i can just open the door for here from my phone 😀 I just needed 10 cm of opening, so that the cat can squeeze through. The water valve motor (with zigbee) is strong enough to pull the door open, against the spring force from the other side. Im closing the door automatically with an mechanical spring powered door closer with a pullong cable. When I unhook the pulling cable, I can use the door normally like before. That is the reason why I didnt use a stepper motor.

@markbrassette3406 First off you are gonna have to try and figure you how to get that thing to attach to the door. Most likely a double-hinged arm. First of all, thanks for sharing! I bought and installed one of these three months ago after viewing your video. Kudos on the ingenuity. I too have a real problem with the inflated costs of automatic coop doors. Plus these smart devices are, indeed, smarter schedule wise. Unfortunately, mine already crapped out 3 months in. I contacted the vendor and they were very responsive and immediately refunded me. I'm about to buy a new one to give it another try, but I'm guessing all the ones I see available for purchase will likely have the same build and longevity. Did you have to replace yours yet? Or have you found a different device to use?

@doinkeroni Год назад
Thanks for the comment. As you said, if the power goes out it is stuck ... but as soon as the power comes back on it resumes the previous commanded position. Regarding the stuck chicken, by using a flexible wire rather than a ridged mechanism, when the door shuts it is just the light weight of the door (gravity) that closes it. If a chicken gets in there, it will surely be able to overpower the light weight of the cookie sheet. Very good observations though!

Good question. This will work via Bluetooth or wifi, but if you use Bluetooth, you would need to use your phone and be in close proximity to it. It works much better being hooked up to wifi so that it can be fully automated. Hope this helps.

@@patrickmcdonald1215 so after investigating further, I originally had to use the "smartlife" app to get the device working properly (the smartlife app was recommended by the valve manufacturer that I purchased). Did the same thing, unfortunately doesn't work when the weather gets below 30°. Went thru 3 valve motors already.
@doinkeroni
@doinkeroni 9 месяцев назад
I'm sorry to hear this. Our weather routinely gets cold (20-30degF) and it has worked very well so far for us. Are you having a communication issue with the valve? Also, is the door you are using harder to open when cold causing the motor to brake? I did notice that mine struggles a bit more when cold due to the friction of the door. I will post an updated video soon that shows one idea to improve it further and reduce the strain on the motor. Stay tuned.
@adamroman8804
@adamroman8804 9 месяцев назад
It worked fine above 40° but once it gets to 20° the motor just gives up after a while. I've used a wooden door and also a piece of cardboard, thinking maybe it was the weight. It opens fine but fails to close. It's not a wifi signal problem because I get a notification that it's trying to close but just fails and sends multiple notifications that it's trying to close. I bring it indoors, warm it up and it works again. I bring it outside and it works until it gets cold again. 2 motors I've returned to Amazon but I have one left and haven't totally given up on it yet lol. I'm thinking about building an insulated box around it.

Thanks for the comment. There is no upper stop, but since the size of the opening is much shorter than the cookie sheet, the only way they could push it up is if their arms were longer than ~12in. Otherwise there is nothing for them to push up on.
