DIY 2 x 72 belt grinder part 1

I Decided it was time to build my 2" x 72" belt grinder. Started off with 2.5" tube steel and some .25" steel plate steel to build the frame and base. Next video will be the platen attachment and the roller tracking arm.
First video ever edited and shot by myself. So let me know if you would like to see more or less of something in particular!
I hope you enjoy the video!

If you would clean off the mill scale with a buffing pad, your welds would run smoother and not have as much porosity. Using acetone is more for cleaning aluminum too rather than A500 material. Out of all the boiler tube that I have welded over the years, a buffing wheel on a Patco and flapper wheel on a 90 die grinder did the trick.

Nicely done Chris, always remember every time you see a thumbs down, as a fabricator you’ve spark some kind of idea on how they could do it better! Sadly most won’t try. Thanks for helping us continue to learn! Can’t wait to see more. ( no one can say they missed taking of all the mill scale when fabricating Fixtures)👍

Where did you pick up that Fancy Tungsten grinder?
@thecraftsman8133
@thecraftsman8133 5 лет назад
for the main frame of the grinder If I use 2"x2"x1/4" square tubing, What is the best fitting tube to slide into the 2x2x1/4??? I assume a 1-1/2"x1-1/2" square tubing. I want the tubes to fit together with very little wiggle room. Is the 1-1/2"x1-1/2"x3/16" the best fit??? and why? I am thinking that due to the radius that is created by the 2 different square tube would give the ideal "complete" fit? Or is there a better smaller tube that should be used for complete surface area fitting. I am looking for the best precision fit so the tool arm and idler arm does not have any sloppy movement. Thanks!
@christopherfall9307
@christopherfall9307 5 лет назад
Jesse Myers I couldn’t find the best suited size for the best fit either. That’s why I had to weld the plates on the side of the smaller tube and mill it down to a precise fit. The only option which I didn’t do because of price is to use cold rolled steel which will allow more precise fitment. Hope this helps
@mattmoilanen3813
@mattmoilanen3813 5 лет назад
A lot of people use angle welded around the tube with shims made from pop cans. After the set screws are tightened there is no play in the sliding mechanism as the set screws push the inner tube away from one side of the outer tube. If your unhappy with the corner radius a 4 1/2 inch grinder will take care of that. There is zero chance you will be able to get every side to contact each other and still be able to slide the inner tube. That's just an impossibility. You will also develop a deformed side on the inner tubes from the set screws. And yes your table will stay true with the set screws tightened. The welding will warp the table far more than any small movement possible from the tube fit. Steel plate is not perfectly flat brand new either right. Not trying to give you a hard time but maybe a bit of mechanical knowledge before taking on a project like this would be helpfull.

@christopherfall9307
@christopherfall9307 5 лет назад
Alessandro Melis I used hot rolled carbon steel for the entire project. Hot rolled needs a little more prep work. But I didn’t mind since cold rolled is more money and hard to find in the sizes I needed. Also stainless would work if you wanted to.

Isn't it a bit stupid to be using a battery operated grinder right next to power. The whole reason for usage of battery powered tools is when you don't have access to electricity outlets. Just keep in mind battery operated tools are also not as strong and fast as cable powered tools.

If you're not providing constructive criticism find another video to watch. He clearly put this up here to give others ideas, of course I bet you've built a lot of DIY projects that people can go watch and I also bet you've done them flawlessly.
