Great video, and super helpful as I revive my dead Gen 2 Volt. My trunk was closed, so climbed in through the back seat and used the trick to release it manually (small cap above the latch on the hatch that you pry off, then insert a 5/16 flat head screw driver into, and turn counter clockwise). One note, you said the strap was held in by a 12mm or 13mm nut, and then later said 12mm. It's actually a 13mm. I just did it, and wanted to post this before I forgot. But seriously helpful video. Dealers charge a ton to replace the 12v, and it really is easily done yourself thanks to your video.

No need to remove the styrofoam or shroud. The trick for getting the battery in and out past the integrated fuse box is to push it down while rotating the top away from the battery. It's a lot easier with two people, where one person can focus on the fusebox and the other on the battery.

Supremely helpful video. I was able to replace my 12v battery by watching this in my 2018 Volt after watching it throw every error code it could at me two days ago. It went from a 5000lb paper weight to a functional car again. Thanks!

FYI, I just did this and was dreading it bc of all the screws to remove the trunk liner. *I did not need to remove the trunk liner.* took me 20 min total. my battery was also dead dead. popped the hood and connected jumper cables to the new battery. popped the trunk. disconnected new battery from the hood. Just use an extension to get to the 13mm strap bolt. then undo the plastic cover on the left by pinching the top and bottom tabs. undo the two bolts on the positive terminal. then the single bolt on the negative. on the top and bottom sides of the plastic cover there is another set of clips holding it onto the battery just pull up and they pop off. pull out the battery with the handle.

You absolutely do not need to remove the styrofoam or the plastic battery surround. The positive terminal block is bulky and is in the way, but the battery easily comes straight up around it.

Sure but it takes 5 minutes and 2 nuts to save aggravation in getting the seatbelt off. Plus you get to see the HV inverters under the foam! Oh And that nut is 13 mm not 12 or 13 🙃

Thanks for the video. You may like to have gloves to protect your hands but they are not necessary to protect you from the 12 volts provided by the battery. The breakdown voltage of your skin is much higher than 12V. Doprotect the terminals from shorts due to maybe dropping a wrench on them.

Given the fire related power outages in Northern California, you might consider making a video about using a Chevy Volt as an emergency standby generator. There are already RU-vid video's showing how to use the cigarette lighter sockets and direct connections to the 12 volt battery; however, I suspect that your low-key and common man approach to DIY would be appreciated.

Here you go... kinda... i ordered a 3000 watt , i will probably try it out in a few weeks. The 2017 volt only generates 1200 or so watts, so its best to be mindful and only use 1000 watts , otherwise it will drain the 12 volt battery. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KYfHFFUEZz4.html

People who know nothing about vehicle repair should not make repair videos. Once you disconnect the negative terminal there are no "shock or short circuit risks" of any kind. As someone else has already commented you only have to take out the battery hold down strap bolt. The video does not show how to disconnect the connection to the positive terminal. GM always makes things supremely serviceable. A screwdriver to disconnect the two plastic snap connectors loosens the large plastic piece which acts as the fuse-holder/terminal board. Pulling it up and to the left allows the battery to be pulled straight up. The Delco battery has a handle designed exactly for this purpose. A second set of hands is helpful. The two battery clamps are loosened by the 10 mm head nuts. All the disassembly described in the video is silly, unnecessary, and complicates the operation. He claims it's for entertainment purposes...he left out the key word, ONLY.

Tip: Get yourself another 12 volt battery, pretty much any one will do. For example, the type of SLA battery used in a UPS works great. While you're changing out the car's battery, leave that second battery attached to the jump post (+) & frame (-) under the hood. This keeps the car's systems afloat well enough that you won't have to reprogram the radio or anything else. Did this in my 2014 Volt when I replaced its battery, and it worked a treat.

How does Volt charge this 12v battery? Is just starting the car enough, even when it doesn't start the gas engine and doesn't drive? I've left my Volt parked for about 15 days when left for vacation, and when got back, the 12v battery was completely dead. Does it mean it's time to replace it, or it's kind of expected that it dies after several days of no use?
@SterlingW8

@@SterlingW8 what I mean is, you can turn the car on, but it may have the high voltage battery charged and will not start the gas engine, then how will it charge the 12v one? Do you need to drive around a bit to charge 12v? Kind of unclear...

@@KlimovArtem1 you just have to have the car on the ON position. It can be plugged in. When i did a 2 week vacation, I came back to a low 12v battery. I jumped it with a portable charger and drove it. Later i plugged into a Level 2 charger and stayed in the car in ON position and just let the Level 2 charge both batteries.
