This marks the beginning of a BRAND NEW series! In this episode we are going to build a 3 link 4 link suspension and situate the suspension mounts on the frame side of the Jeep TJ. The front end will be held together by a 3 link suspension system that we build ourselves. The rear will be a semi-triangulated 4 link. The goal for total stretch will be 103" wheel base.

Subscribed... I currently run a ‘13 JKU Rubicon with the upgrades stated in a previous comment and Poison Spyder Brawler flat fenders (brand new $400...instead of $1,300), 2004 TJ with the stock suspension off of my Rubicon and 33” BFG KO3 but I gave that to my 19 year old son (good kid) and a 1999 XJ with Dodge half ton axles (free) with trusses, C-gussets, disc brakes, 20” Fox Nitrogen shocks (rear), 4” XJ lift springs and BDS shocks mounted on a custom 3 link! The rear is a double triangulated 4 link and everything has 1.25” Chrome Moly heims from Ballistic Fab! Home fabbed bead locks with 38” Nitto Mud Grapplers and “custom paint” custom bumpers, sound system, fuel system and full hydro steering! Next in line is a ‘78 J-10 with the 360, granny gear 4-speed that will soon have EFI and 35” boggers for a trail bomber and possibly an S-10 I have with the stock XJ axles, built 4.3 on LPG and a 5-speed for the kids to throttle on! I have those exact brackets on my XJ and everything worked out perfect and she flexes big time!

Nicely done and nicely explained. I'm glad you touched on the difference between theoretical vs practical concerns. There is a huge difference in theory between one-link, two, three, and four-link suspension designs. But like you say about your buddies designs. They work. Furthermore, I bet a skilled driver couldn't tell the difference in a blind test. I like you bolt in design. Makes it easier to fabricate, and more importantly it makes it easier to update later on.

I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming. For what it's worth, I used to hate cleaning cutting oil my metal. I always wipe down with acetone before welding, but the oil was especially a pain. Visiting with my machinist friends, they mentioned for all of the shop work us Fabricators do, we can use water as a coolant/lubricant and it is more than enough. I've been doing so for years now and it is awesome. I use a Dental squeeze bottle with a pickup tube and it works awesome. Water for all bandsaw and drill press. And its evaporated by the time I got the millscale flapdisced off. So oil never contaminates my gloves, weld table, flapdiscs, drillpress, etc.

I enjoyed the video, I actually have a 1979 Cherokee chief similar to your J truck, But its in the process of a 3 link front and 4 link rear, Its definitely a handful to do but I almost have the front buttoned up and going to start on the rear soon. I love the series so far

Phosgene gas is created by combining heat and UV light, with Braklene and other solvents. You can die or have lifelong respiratory problems combining the two. Glad you mentioned it in your video. Even in a well ventilated area, this is a serious concern. Check your solvents for tetrachloroethylene- even a dose of 4 parts per million, as small as a puff of smoke can be fatal.

This was a great video, I would love to see a detailed video on the int ital design of a link setup from a stock setup if you have any buddies that might be linking soon. Low and good clearance is the way to go. This is your best build because it's what I would do. I got 35 on a stock height jk with flat fenders it's a billy goat and still can fit in an underground parking lot

Can you differentiate jeep stretching. Other videos suggest cutting and adding length to the frame. With a 3 or 4 link it appears no chopping is necessary,and the stretch is all in the control arms. Love your suspension videos brotha.

Great stuff man. Followed you from bleepin Jeep. I’m in the process of figuring out a setup I want on my k10.... not only for off-road use but for better drive ability bc the factory leafs are rough on the old back!!!! Mainly for the front and figure out a factory suspension I could use for better parts accessavility

Good stuff. I need to rework the suspension on my XJ to stuff some 39.5 TSLs under my XJ. How important is it to get the front upper link parallel to the vehicle? Seems like it would want to push the axle one way or the other when you brake or hit the gas otherwise.

The upper link needs to be as flat as possible for the best stability under braking or acceleration in 4 wheel drive. When you combine this with a lower link that is 10° or less you end up with a suspension that meets the needs of 99% of wheelers. Rock bouncers are just about the only exception. They set up their front suspension with lots of dive. This is to keep the front end down while they're going up those steep ass ass hills you see in the videos lol. The downside is when you let off the throttle your actual pushes the front and down and the vehicle flips backwards ass over tea kettle.

Great job and lots of good info. The only thing that is wrong that I can see is, you NEVER want your differential pointing at the transfer case. That is a u-joint failure just waiting to happen. Most people don't seem to understand this. You want your differential at the exact same angle as your u-joint coming off of your transfer case. That is the way u-joints are designed to run. Same angles! I know this from my old drag racing days. I used to point the rear end at the back of the trany and couldn't understand why I couldn't keep u-joints in it. I was pulling 8000 rpm hole shots and snapping u-joints like nothing. The best u-joints money could by broke like glass. Then someone educated me. Keep the joints at the same angle! People thought Ford was retarded on some of their 3/4 ton 4x4s around early 1970s. They had the front differential actually pointing down toward the ground slightly. That was because the transfer case was pointing up slightly. The joints need to be at the same angle. That's why they did that. They weren't retarded after all. Learn from them and save yourself a lot of u-joint grief! Seriously!! Do some research if you doubt me. Other than that, I'm impressed!

Hey man I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! Let's talk about the issue you have with my U joint angle. "You never want your differential pointing at your transfercase". Unfortunately this is untrue. I will provide a link at the bottom of this comment for you to click on and see what I'm talking about. If one side of your driveshaft is a constant velocity joint, you want your pinion facing your t-case as much as possible. This gives you the most strength and the least vibration. Like most Jeeps, I have a cv joint on the tcase side of the driveshaft. But with u joints on both ends you are absolutely correct. Thanks for the comment! Hey man I love your stuff..... I’m not really a Jeep guy except for the older ones, but I love both my square bodies..... now I have an idea I would like to pitch to you being you’re a great fabricator and mechanically knowledgeable...... I want to ad a 4 link setup to my k10 for driving comfort and a little off-road stuff from time to time(pretty basic) how do I determine the link of my link bars? The pan hard bar should be parallel to the tierod bar as much as possible for the least amount of bumpsteer just the links and placement of the links is what gets me.... I don’t want to set up for rock bouncing and maybe keeping the leafs......

So, Im going to attempt to build my first three link in a 52 Dodge M37 with and LS swap. You mentioned a geometry calculator, did you end up using one or just do what I do and tac check tac check? thanks

The calculator is great for getting an idea of exactly how the changes you make effect the squat and dive numbers. BUT its BS for real world building. The two most important numbers are an educated guess and this throws off the final values substantially. I use the calculator to get my mind back into the basic concepts for a new suspension setup but don't actually try and build anything with the data. The basic rules I talk about in these videos are a way to get good performance out of suspension when your trying to package it in a existing vehicle. Hopefully the "rule of thumb" ideas I have in this series will help you on your build! Good luck and have fun brother 👍

I think you're wrong about the shorter uppers keeping the pinion pointed correctly. I think sufficiently longer uppers will keep the pinion pointed upwards. Works that way on the rear of my Jeep.

Heeey! Need some help with the 3 link project! How does the horizontal separation of the links affects the project? I have no clearance to weld the brackets on the diff or close to it. Can the upper link be placed 2" horizontally from the lower link?

Hey Nate, do you have any problems with the plate bolted to the frame holding the link mounts flexing, or are the bolts on both sides of the frame enough to handle it? How many bolts do you have on each side of the frame. Are the bottom bolts mounted all the way through the frame? Thanks!

Do you use MIG or TIG welder for these projects? Also what type of steel are you using on these mountings etc?

Am I correct that your old front suspension system looked to be a radius arm style set up? I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on it and why you are changing to the 3 link set up. I LOVE your videos, everything about them is perfect, well filmed and very clear/informative. I'm looking at doing a 3 link/4 link set up in my Discovery 1 and these are helping me heaps! Thanks

Yes, the old suspension was radius arms. I ran it that way for almost a decade. Great system but it does have binding which slowly wears out bushings. I decided to upgrade the suspension to a 3 link to make the geometry right and decrease binding. Long term I'll be making my disco a 3 link front and 4 link rear. Very similar to the setup on my Jeep. Glad to hear the videos are helping you out!
