DIY 3D-printed Wire Bending Machine

Build a wire bending machine capable of bending 0.8/0.9/1 mm wire into any 2D shape. The coolest thing I was able to make with it so far was the spring. How cool is that?
The main goal was to make it quite precise. Other DIY wire bending machines are not very precise and their bends tend to have quite a big radius. I like to work with nice sharp bends!
The second goal was to make it as easy to build as possible with commonly available parts and components. All the structural parts are 3D printed and all the metal parts are available in most of the hardware stores.
Why I build this? Check out my other creations. I am a passionate free-form electronic circuits artist and this awesome machine will ease my job when doing repetitive tasks or when there are a need identical parts.

woah, this is sick. I could've used this a couple years ago for a custom throttle spring on a go-cart my dad and I built. We ended up welding a bracket to use a shorter spring we had. I love how 3D printing brings innovation like this.

Jiri, thanks for building and sharing the details of your wire bender. I have built the machine and am having good results with it. To keep the wire in contact with the welding wire driver, I use a wedge of compressible plastic under the lever instead of the spring (The suppliers of the welding machines have good videos on adjusting the tension). However the driving mechanism seems to twist the wire as it feeds it - not noticeable doing springs but quite apparent using your files hex-outer and hex-inner. The wire rotates along its axis counterclockwise with the normal feed direction, the other way feeding backwards. I am looking to build some code to generate g-code more easily for simple shapes such as a spring with an increasing radius, or even the radius increasing then decreasing over the length of the spring. There is also the software provided by How To Mechatronics which can be adapted to your design. Thanks again, Jiri.

This was pretty cool! I'm a spring maker myself, and I love how you've done this! Did you search up some coiling machine designs? Cause this really does look like the start of a wire former, got a wire straightener and everything! If you were to move the servo back a bit, and add another at a 90 degree angle you'd be able to do 3d forms. Also I bet you could add a bolt-on 2 point coiling hand. Just groove a couple pins to the wire size, make them adjustable on a x&y axis, and you'd be able to coil springs so much faster!

If you use the bending arm for first bend then if you hold the bending arm in a fixed place and push the wire towards it..it will bend faster and more accurate..

Looks great. Couple of ideas that might improve it: 1) Rotate one of the straightners through 90 degrees. 2) Change the steel bending arm so that it's made out of a 3D printed part which holds a small steel tube - Easier to make. 3) When making a continuous curve with a large radius, is it not better to keep the former in a fixed position and feed wire into it rather than making it bend the wire in small steps?

When 3d printing holes for screws to go into do you print the threats right into the hole for machine screws or do the threads of the screw cut into the plastic just fine?
@JiriPraus
@JiriPraus 4 года назад
I rather print a hole for a nut. You can apply a much higher torque. But if you make the hole 0.1mm smaller than the size of screw you can screw it in and it will hold just fine. But not suitable for loosening and tightening over and over again.

@@VicFroman gear reduction = backlash, which is undesirable. I would try to overcome this by adding some kind of locking clutch. The other way could be to increase the diameter of the rotating head for increased mechanical advantage. OR if backlash is not an issue, use a worm gear so that there is no load on the motor when it needs to be stopped. Or do nothing if your design works :)
