LLYT here! This is part 1 of my 2 part series on how to build a Grecian themed, half tank, above tank turtle basking platform. This platform fits my 75 gallon aquarium but would fit aquariums that are 18" wide. It could also be scaled to different sizes. Check out the link below for pdf of the blueprint and materials list! Awesome design! One minor note on the pdf… on the overall dimensions (top view) the width shows 19” and the opening between the legs is 15.5”. The legs are 3.5” wide each. Doesn’t quite add up. I can make the adjustments, just thought you may want to check it (unless I’m reading it wrong). Thanks again for the inspiration. We are doing an Asian dojo theme since our turtle is named from The Last Airbender.

All it takes is tons of filtration! Throw out half of the sponges, add biomedia and I barely ever have to clean the actual inside of the tank!

How big is your turtle? Love this basking area and have been looking for a design that would work for my RES/tank setup. So, thanks for making a design that seems affordable and easy enough to accomplish with a little bit of time and attention to detail!

My turtles is ~7 inches but this would be adequate to about ~10" since the basking area and ramp are large. Thanks and good luck if you go with the design!

i have two red eared sliders (Perry and Jerry) i got them when i was 8 and 10 yrs old and now that im older i realize ive been doing everything wrong :< i recently mayabe a year and a half ago got them a basking lamp but i live in an apartment so i cant give them a big tank, right now theyre in a BIG plastic container like for storage. Im trying to build them a basking platform because the basking rock i got them BROKE in half while the Perry was climbing it, shes super heavy and big and bites. So during winter break im going to commit myself to making them a platform so they have more room to bask and to swim because they dont know how :( *you really inspired me to do this for them* Also. I seriously think kids shouldnt get pet turtles without doing research like i did, i had 3 others and they died beause i couldnt care for them enough (had them different years apart not all together) my sister had a red eared slider when she was a child and it lived for 25 years without any special care so i thought mine would as well. But soon my turtles will have a palace where they can be king and queen. yes theyre boy and girl but we have NO plans for making a nesting area hehe 😂😂

Well it is great to hear Perry and Jerry are doing well even if you were unaware of proper husbandry. Yes many people do not know the correct way to care for the turtle, which is unfortunate. They are hardy animals but have their limits :( But now that YT exists the info on turtles is endless! I hope you are able to create a great basking platform for them. I feel like there isn't a lot of air exchange in the tank for the turtles when they come up for air. Basking area looks nice, but the covers on the other side seem they would limit air flow. You can actually get mold growing in on the sides of the tank and under the lip of the plastic tank trim too if it's too moist in there on the edges with not so much air flow. If the mold gets in there then the air that is there would also then be contaminated air. I probably would have made a separate box for the other side that is similar to the wall design of the last topper. Then you could just take the one side off without having to remove the whole thing.... so basically like the first one but in two pieces. Still, nice job on the basking area and I like the little plants in there but my girls would probably attack them. LOL

Hey thanks for the comment! With the open area in the location of the ramp I’m not worried about the amount of air under the other cover. I have not seen mold yet! 🤞 great idea though, don’t get me thinking or I’ll start another project ;)

He already sells a topper on Etsy, but it's $300. It's worth it! It's the best topper out there! But the price is still steep. This would be more bc you can't ship flat.

My 12-year-old daughter and I are tackling this project. I've got your instructions (thank you!), but we are both very confused about what woods (e.g, ply, poplar, etc.) are being referred to in each section on the document. We understand (we think!) that the floor is all ply, but when we get to cutting other parts, we're not sure which woods you're using. Would it be possible to identify the wood being used in the document? Maybe create, "Revision 4?"

I would not count on it adding any strength, if anything it is an additional load on the tank. If you can determine that your tank's strength is comparable to tanks with black bracing than it could work. Always play it safe though.

How does the wood/paint hold up with the moisture? I had a piece of wood ( with no paint ) covering half a side of my oscar tank temporarily, and it started to rot and nasty water would drip back into the tank. I only had it up temporarily but how do you prevent that ? And would the condensation dripping off the paint into the tank be an issue ?

I painted mine with an outdoor type paint and later a clear coat to protect it from the moisture. The dripping is minimal and while I am assuming here I do not believe the paint is so toxic to cause harm from just drips, as long as I am doing water changes I don't worry about it. Just make sure everything dries really well before installing. Thanks for the question!

I am having a hard time finding a new tank for my red eared slider . I always find fish tanks but they're very narrow , have any suggestions where I can find a wide - large gallon tank? Shes in a 50 gallon currently but is slowly outgrowing it

I am not sure where you live but in the US you can usually find larger tanks at Petco, Petsmart or other similar big pet stores. Some do not carry the larger tanks so it can take a little extra searching sometimes. If you have one, ask your local fish store and see what they suggest. Good luck!

And also if you sell basking platforms and could ship to california?! This a market that is so missing in the turtle community!! I need a basking platform for a 180gal and a 120 gal for my red ear slider and my false map!

How long did it take your turtles to get used to the basking platform?? We just got one for our red eared slider and it's been 3 days and I'm getting worried that he won't get up there and bask.

It took a few days. Have you tried putting your slider up on it and letting them slide back into the water? Has your slider attempted to climb it? If so it might be too hard to climb, otherwise I think your turtle just needs to figure it out. If you are always around the tank your turtle might be too nervous too. Just some thoughts!

I'm new to this red ear slider turtle that I Inherited from my family member who past away . So I did add some bigger size river Rocks and bought some Some big supplies of turtle food for my Red ear slider turtle I don't give it lot I give it a pich of food for it But I also ordered a plated foum float to put in the turtle aquarium it's coming here to my house to be delivered by before 8pm today I'm hardly wait to see what it looks like

I am confused between the document VS the video. I am in the process of building the frame and I am trying to build the side window (parts 6, 9, 10, 12) The diagram for the inside window (page 11) is how I originally built it, with an offset of .25 from the left and right edges of the 6s. Your video though shows this inside window (27:43) with the 6 (the supports) glued to the edge of the attached pieces. Additional to this confusion is the measurements. Parts 9 and 10 (bottom and top) of the inside window are at their widest 18.25. It looks to me like if I follow pdf measurements and the way you show in the video that the inside window (18.25') and the opposite side wall (18.5') will also be offset by .25 and not provide for a straight front window. I am stumped. Something is off either on measurements on the PDF of 9 and 10, or I'm missing something in the video about how the walls specifically overlap at the corners Hopefully, that makes sense..... difficult to describe the conundrum.

Oh man, I blew it. Nice catch. The side wall should not have the .25" offset of the supports (part 6). The back wall should be 18.5 inches (part 5) and parts 9 and 10 should be 18.5 inches. I will update the pdf. I hope this doesn't set you back to much. Awesome you are building it though! Let me know how it all turns our and if you find any more mistakes with the blueprints!

@@LongLiveYourTurtle Haha, no problem man. Doesn't set us back far, I think we just need to buy another one of the 1.5 poplar boards and replace 2 cut pieces. My boyfriend loves your content by the way. He had us build the first basking platform months ago and he was talking about doing your new rebuild just a week ago. Soon after he mentioned it, we introduced new fish (convicts) and his turtle gave us a scare by getting stuck between our pirate ship ornament and the wall trying to get the fish, nearly drowning herself. Took her out she gasped for air and we made her recuperate in a dry tank. I think she was telling us to build the smaller basking area so it doesn't take 2 people to rescue her lol A change of ornament orientation and this new platform should make a rescue unnecessary hopefully. Also hello from colorado!

Well thank you and thank your boyfriend for the fantastic support! It’s what motivates me to keep making these videos! I hope your fix works out. Aren’t turtles ridiculous sometimes! Haha glad you were able to help him out though, maybe next time he’ll be more careful (yeah right, it’s get the fish or die trying!) that’s why I like the smaller basking area, much lighter and easier to work with. My turtles just lay on the bottom of the tank in the sand. They do not sleep out of the water.

Turtle's require basking areas and specific lighting. Otherwise, filters, heaters, and general water care are similar to fish tanks. Definitely look into what it takes to care for a turtle if you are interested, good luck!
