HOW TO Build DIY Above-Tank Basking Area for PET TURTLE

Little tip for sharp edges from cut zip ties or egg crate, use a lighter (cautiously) for a couple seconds and it’ll dull out the sharp edges.

Great job! I appreciate the ideas. I got a 10 year old turtle a few months ago. To the best of my knowledge all he has known is a 10 gallon. I’m getting a much larger tank set up for him. I have found the basking area shopping to be sparse so I’m very excited about these DIY’s. Thank you for sharing!

great video! I created the same one for my red eared slider. Quick thing I want to mention as I recently experienced this and want to warn others: if your turtle has long nails, BEWARE!! my turtle tried jumping off his area into the water and his nail got stuck on one of the little squares. I found him hanging upside down with his neck all disoriented. thankfully he’s okay but I just want to warn others!

That really was strangely satisfying that it fit.

My yellow belly sliders are on the bigger side and you gave me the opportunity to custom make one to their size. I watched all your videos for this project and the green terrain was genius!

I made this for my 75 gallon and I put reptile bedding liner on it, my turtle loves it so much!! Thank you this was a life saver so much cheaper than what I would’ve paid

So for the lamps are you just having them lay directly ontop of the egg crate? And do you recommend putting something on the ramp to make it easier to climb up ? Like felt or something?

thank you so much for this, I am about to make one for my turtle, I have had him for about a year and he has had a 10 gallon, the other day I upgraded him to a 60 gallon and I need to get him a new dock and I couldn't find and cheap and good one but this is perfect !

I love DIY projects also, this is such an awesome idea I am going to build mine ASAP for sure. Could you suggest something to put on the floor of the loft and the ramp so her feet don't go though the holes in the egg crate and I would really like how it would look I just don't know what would be safe to use. I was also wondering if you can give tips on the filter to keep the tank clean and how to set it up. Idk what I’m doing wrong? 😞😢

aye, so i did mine very similar to your but i’m having problems with the temp. it’s no room temp at 78 degrees, any idea how i could make it warmer ? i’m trying to avoid getting a powerful bulb because i think it will be too warm. any ideas?

What tool are you using to cut it

It looks like the inside of the top of the tank has a little ledge on which the floor sits. Is that correct? My tank doesn’t have a ledge, so I’m wondering if the turtle topper could just sit on the top, where even the slightest numb would move it off center. I’m trying to think about how I’d secure the basking area. Great idea and great video! Thanks!!

Are you putting heat lamps on top of plastic?? Won't that melt the plastic?

Hi, I wanted to ask you what kind of filter you use and if you feed the turtle in the tank...we bought a $200 Fluval 407 tank for our 70 gallon tank and the water gets dirty right away especially I think from the food. Do u have any suggestions?

i built a diy basking area using a storage container (hard plastic, and i'm having problems with the flexibility of my ramp. I cut up a tupperware container to make the ramp, and it's just to flimsy. i drilled holes and twist tied my ramp to my container/basking area but it didn't work! I'm trying to find a material i can use to secure the ramp to the basking area so that it doesn't bend so much, because that makes it really hard for my turtles to get in there!

Quick question for anyone who may have an answer... I own a 6 year old female red eared slider. She's in a 55 gallon tank. And I'm pretty sure it's the same exact tank in this video. Looks exactly like it. I want to make a basking area for her just like this but, the heat lamp.. wouldn't that melt the plastic?

How do you keep this type of basking area at 95 degrees? I made it and with the holes the cold air gets through. My vet says the baskin area should be 95-100 degrees. How do I do that ❤️
