**********UPDATE & WARNING 4-11-17**********
Several viewers noticed the BRAKE HOSE in this video was cracked and rightfully suggested to replace it. The brake hose actually DID rupture before I could get the owner to bring in the vehicle, thankfully they were able to safely pull over and no damage was done.
So, if you drive a mid 2006 Ford Escape, CHECK YOUR BRAKE HOSES! The front ones are likely cracked and ready to burst when you really need the brakes. Hopefully that saves someone from a potentially dangerous and scary situation!
****************************************************************
Time to put away the scope and get out your wrenches and hammers!
Here I show a DIY replacement of an ABS tone ring and a lower ball joint on this 2006 Ford Escape.
Part 1 where we diagnosed the cause of the ABS system fault:

Automechanics at it's best, thanks for going through the effort to let us watch over your shoulder. It's a sign of an honest teacher, when you give timely safety advice. I find it very disconcerting when some authors make it sound too easy, setting people up for dangerous failure.

I was happy to see you protecting yourself especially with the respirator...rust dust will wreak havoc in your lungs and heavy metals will be there for life. I recommend to use a metal bristles brush to clean tha tone ring area or sandpaper like 100 or 150 grit to sand off the rust around the ring, using a file can damage the surface around where the ring will go in as a file can take way too much metal and leave uneven areas and cause the ring no to be able to be installed tightly, another thing is to use the old tone ring on top of the new one to hammer to install it also put some light bead of grease around the area and it it’ll go in perfectly.

First would like to say thanks for the video. well shown and gave good advice. I differ from your opinion on anti-seize though. just did a break job on an '06 and it took 2 hours to get the rotor off. this included using torch and a BFH. those several swipes of anti-seize made it for several strikes from your hammer and it came off.

I just did this on the drivers side including the brake hose. After cleaning most of the rust where the tone ring sits, I sprayed some high temp rust resistant paint to help prevent a re occurrence although I doubt this will be on the road in another 10 years. Should I need to do another one I'll definitely borrow the tools that some auto parts stores offer to make the job easier. There were no major issues.. hardest part was seating the new tone ring. First time for me so I went slow.. a couple of hours including greasing the sway bar links that I replaced last year.

I bought one last year. 06’ Escape XLT. Excellent condition, no problems, no rust, clean vehicle, 136k mi.. Got it home and got under it to inspect the overall condition of suspension/steering components. There was not any problems (*other than what is described below), I was merely giving close inspection of my new purchase. Holy crap. What cheap parts Ford used! The sway bar links were so...cheap! Nothing had a grease zerk! I decided to to some preventive maintenance and replaced everything with MOOG. Links, tie rods, etc.. While I was at it, I replaced the shocks, struts, new slotted rotors and ceramic pads. All cheap enough and easy enough to do.Also, I replaced the crappy cracked brake hoses! In this video, one can see the crap brake hoses. I would recommend replacing those as; well-cheap and easy to do. Popped on a new set of Firestones/alignment and we are good to go! I have to say the vehicle is better than new as the MOOG “problem solving” parts are far superior. Handles like a new vehicle. 👍 So, the vehicle is like new in performance, handling and appearance. But that is not the coolest thing about this purchase...no. The coolest thing was that I bought the vehicle at a yard sale for...(drum roll)...$400.00! And my wife found a ten dollar bill stuck between the seats on the way home from the sale! Down to $390.00!!! Details. $500. OBO on the sign. The guy thought he had an internal engine problem, said it made a horrible noise. I asked if it was a high pitch tick or a duller thud knocking. He said neither, and that it comes and goes. I told him that internal engine problems don’t come and go; but come and get worse! Got it fired up(dead batt) and it was purring quietly. He said give it a few minutes...after 5min, the noise came. I looked down and saw the tensioner and belt flapping about, pointed out to him that the problem was outside the engine, not internal ( I’m an honest guy). He pointed to his brand new truck and said, “Well, I got a new truck, so make me an offer. I said $400 and he said deal! I stopped at parts store on way home and got a new belt and tensioner. When I got home, I found the culprit that caused the tensioner failure; *bad bearing on the a/c compressor clutch($15). These vehicles are relatively easy to work on unless...oh boy...unless the alternator neeeds replaced! That is a major pain and best left to a shop...and it’s gonna cost. Easily 3-5hrs labor. It’s UNDER the engine in the REAR! A real pain in the keister for those that may be lacking tools and experience. In summary, save yourself some future troubles by replacing the cheesy Ford steering and suspension with quality MOOG parts!Do it now! Of course, I’m watching this video because I have lights and codes! U2023 and C1233. Time to replace a tone ring and/or sender. Wish I had that sweet, sweet SnapOn scanner! Good video instruction! Someone buy that man a garage heater! Liberty. Constitution. Republic.

Five years later… Hurricane Ian totaled the Escape. Fully insured, got $5000. !!! For a $390. SUV! Not bad! Bought a 05 Freesyle with leather and all the toys for $3k Super excellent condition! Has a CVT; constant velocity transmission. Took a while to get used to…uh…um…no gears shifting! Smooth, quiet, 17mpg city and yes, fully insured! 😁👍

Always refreshing to see a bit of "wrenching". The Nano is really impressive. I always wondered if one of those would have the same beans from a small home compressor as it gets from Dr O's professional setup in his shop. I really want one of them now. All i have is a cheap battery impact for zipping my wheels off and torquing them back on.
@lorrinbarth1969
@lorrinbarth1969 8 лет назад
+zoidberg444 If buying a compressor get something decent. $500 will get you a 30 gallon upright with a belt driven compressor. The motor needs 220 volts so you may have to add new wiring to the garage. This will pump to 130 psi and do anything you require of it.
@zoidberg444
@zoidberg444 8 лет назад
+Lorrin Barth Yeah. I was leaning towards a 2.5HP twin cylinder direct drive one I'd seen. But everyone says belt driven ones last longer and are quieter. I just want something that can keep up. I'd hate to spend a bit of money on something and then find out it couldn't keep up. I'm from the UK so all our domestic sockets put out 240V at 13A anyway and i have a 16A blue plug in my garage as well. Power isn't a problem.

You can get a complete lower control arm with new bushings and ball joint already installed at Autozone for $59.99, the quality is very good, and that CV shaft should have just been replaced, and of course the complete strut. I`m replacing all the suspension and brakes on my 2005 Escape this week, can`t wait to get into it.

Well done Ivan. I work on quite a few Escapes and abnormal tire wear seams to be a big issue. Some tire brands a worse than others it seems. They need frequent rotations also. When I replace tone rings I use green locktight on them to seal out moisture and ensure they don't move.

You can tighten up tolerances by using a center punch to knurl the surface and then use red Loctite on the surface before reinstalling the ring. Be careful how large and how deep the knurling goes or the ring won't fit.

I don't know the answer but the DIY'er probably doesn't have every fancy tool. So, for them seeing the job done with hand tools is a bonus.

+Adel Jeffrey (Jeffrey's Auto) An air hammer is actually a rather low volume air application. Ivan would be able to get away with using his small compressor. Die grinders or anything that spins a turbine are air hogs. For those you need a big dog compressor. I have a nice big Quincy since I paint and do body work. I need it to power my SATA spray guns and AirVantage Air Sanders. Anything smaller than two stage 80 gallon 5 hp would be useless for me.

You say you need a real air hammer. I picked up a Snap-on PH3050A off ebay. Actually I picked up two...by accidentally bidding on both and won both. I now say careful what you bid on you just may win. I sold one of them. Moving up the a real air hammer means you need to upgrade to real bits. My cheap HF bits mushroomed inside the head and was a bear to get out. Nice videos I subscribed. PS if you get a real hammer you need the quick disconnect with it. Cause like they said is true with the spring holder your bit will go soaring across the room if you dry fire it not against anything.

I like to give the ball joint c press a smack with a hammer either on the end of the threaded rod or the other end. I find the shock helps it move easier. I actually had a harbor freight c-press blow apart while changing ball joints on my ram 3500. I don't know how I didn't get hit in the face with the bottom half it passed between the fender and my head and landed about 10 feet behind me. Since then I tighten up the forcing screw till it stops and hit it with a hammer, I was just going at it with a breaker bar when it blew apart.

What other occupation could you be working with a 4 channel lab scope one minute, and a B.F.H. the next, how could you not love it? Thanks for taking the time to show people the correct way to do this procedure. P.S. I use dingle berry hones on a lot of components, it really helps remove rust and small burrs, they make these hones in several different sizes, they really help on ball joints, and u joints .....and of course brake cylinders ......... so on & so forth, any way it helps me. Obviously don't go crazy with the hone cause no one should ever weld them in place ever!!!! just a little tiny quick pass with a hone that isn't to big. Cheers,

+cbsctomh Loctite 640, 660, 680 applied before installing the ring or 290 after ring installation would be a prudent move. Besides locking the ring in place it would also stop most moisture and corrosive road deicing chemicals intrusion under the ring and preventing corrosion expansion and a future failure.

Maybe not impact the axle nut on? I though this can cause premature bearing failure? Good video tho...Makes me feel a lil better about my ball joint jobs....

+TerminatorD4 As long as the torque is close to "factory spec" you should be OK :)

Just curious why you and ERIC O bash doorman parts so bad? I use them at my shop and have not had an issue. If I do then they stand behind them.

+Nick Palmer Yeah, sometimes there is no alternative so aftermarket parts are the only option. Definitely better than nothing! But i have had several comebacks due to bad quality parts (generally they last about a year).

+Nick Palmer I can't speak for all dorman parts. I bought a set of steering wheel rebuild gears for my Maxima. Well, the machining on the threads was wrong, so much so that I had to file it down for couple of hours, so they can work without binding. Turns out Dorman knew about that. Finally 6 month later, they retooled those parts, so I am getting a new set of those gears to try them out. I think in general Dorman has great intent in providing solution for badly designed oem parts and be able to buy just the failed component, vs a much more expensive entire new oem part. However the execution maybe a bit shy of perfect.
