If you use a table saw with a sled you don’t need to sand anything because a table saw spins faster than a chop saw and it doesn’t leave any splinters leaving out the extra work of sanding

Another tip/possibility for anyone else that this might help: If you use a Zero-Clearance fence & miter insert, it prevents the back side of the cut from splintering and creates a very clean cut. You can usually buy inserts for cheap and make a sacrificial backing fence out scrap MDF.

How do you prevent this thing from splitting as the wood expands and contracts with the seasons? Being glued to a backer board and to each other seems it would cause cracking and splitting with moisture changes. Thanks.

The backing is 2ft x 4ft x 3/4in if someone is questioning.

Amazing video thank you! If you aren’t doing a 12x12grid as per the BBC design, how do you decide what pattern to use? For instance, I can only do several smaller 9x9 grids, will this matter?

I just repeated the design after 12 blocks, I suppose for a 9x9 grid you would just do the first 9 in each row. Could be something cool to experiment with! Thanks for watching

Could you follow the same pattern and use 4x4s instead for a bigger one? Or would that throw off the diffuser capabilities?

I've been wanting to try this! I believe it would still work but the diffusion effect would be on a larger scale. I've seen some larger control rooms use 4x4 in their designs as well, def something cool to consider. Thanks for watching

Very Nice. Looks like a piece of Modern Art. Only because I'm totally ignorant about the science of audio & sound acoustics, is it large enough to blunt sound? And If so, why?

While standard acoustic panels are designed to absorb sound energy within a frequency range, diffusers are designed to scatter the sound without reducing the sound energy within the room. This allows the sound to reflect in many directions instead of in straight lines off of a flat reflective surface. This reduces flutter echo and reverberation without attenuating certain frequencies. There’s a ton of great resources about diffusion all over RU-vid and elsewhere if you’re interested in diving deeper. Thanks for watching!

Very cool! Is it possible to use Styrofoam instead of wood? Since a diffuser doesn't absorb anything, it's an alternative, right? Excellent video, as always

Great video! You hang it too high it should’ve been lower, on the level of listening position. It’s just my opinion I might be wrong.😊
