When you said you didn't design it the proper way, you mean by use a calcultor like this one : www.oliverprime.com/prd/?show=calculator ? Good job tho.
@OldTelecasterMan

Very nice looking piece... Before you put things together you could drill out each of the pieces of wood with a bit just a bit smaller than the dimension of the wood to lighten things up. You could even so back with a router set to the depth of hole of the shortest piece around the inside of the put together piece and remove quite a bit more weight. You would probably lessen the weight by about 75%. Again... Nice looking piece and neat idea...

As an audio engineer I have bought some of these for my studio (2 to be exact) and always wondered how these were made. This one is beautiful. Mine are black, but now that I see yours in the raw form yours looks way more bad ass....especially since you made it yourself. Lol. This is awesome.

He did a really good job. I'm glad he admitted how labor-intensive the whole project was! I've been thinking of doing this treatment on my whole fireplace wall, not really to affect sound - purely decorative, so the heights of the blocks wouldn't need to be as long ( I m considering 1/2/4 inches). We'll see...

Looks cool. I made something very similar a couple of years ago in a horizontal plain. A few of us however spent awhile boring and drilling random small holes in the base of the buildings and windows. I then used LED lights to illuminate probably 80% of the buildings to give it night time feel.

I just went through the same world of pain while making some game sprites from Super Mario Bros. using 1" maple cubes. 512 cubes, each one having to hit the belt sander! Seeing your video gives me motivation to see the project through, cheers!

? his hand is nowhere near the blade. and he may have a sawstop installed where it retracts the blade if it detects a finger. it wild and it actually works. demonstrators put their fingers into blades at trade shows and it never cuts them. his sleeve touching the belt sander is far worse.

One thing you could do is change your mounting method and route out the entire back an inch or so deep while keeping the edges full length. The heaviest part is the last 2 inches and you'd essentially cut that in half. So it would be about 3/4 the weight.

Loved watching you take this project on. I've been down the same line but haven't thought of actually gluing them together. BUT ... to perform well as a diffusor the front of each piece should really be angled, (in individually different degrees, 10°-30°). Then the difference between the long and the short pieces doesn't have to be that big. And as someone else pointed out, drilling into the back of each piece really takes of some weight. :) I'll be doing mine soon. Thanks again.

This is called a 2 Dimensional Quadratic Diffusor. It scatters sound waves to Make the room seem bigger. There is a particular order that the towers belong in. There’s a code you are supposed to follow. And the easiest way to build one is to do the shortest blocks first. Clamp them, let them dry, then do the next tallest set, and repeat. I know I’ve built a few. I’ve done the 1 Dimension Version as well for my studio.

This is the most insane project I have seen since Marius Hornberger built a million boxes. I have a place were something like that could look good. But longer and less wide. But it would need to be some hardwood which would make it insanely expensive and heartbreaking to cut it all up in otherwise unusable chunks.

I like it a lot. I wonder if you added an additional painful step of using a drill press and boring out some of the material in side each stick ... just to keep the weight down. It would also be an excellent place to hide individual jelly beans.
@JohnHeisz
@JohnHeisz 7 лет назад
Let's break it down: Assume a weight reduction of a bit less than half (~30lbs) is the best we could do. That's 480 holes to drill, which would take several hours (i'm guessing a full day, all things considered). Probably dull the bit to the point that it would have to be resharpened at least twice while doing this. Consider running the drill press for several hours while doing this - the wear and tear on that tool, plus the electricity used. finally, look at the mess we created that needs to be cleaned up - 30lbs of sawdust to sweep up and get rid of. Once the thing goes up on the wall, it's fine. The wall doesn't care that there's an 80lb pile of blocks hanging off it.

Hi John, your Prime Number diffuser turned out nice. I have designed several of these for different frequency applications in Architectural Acoustics. What is lacking in the video is how you determined this random pattern or is this just from looks. Either way, without properly treating the remainder of your room, I'm not sure the results you are interested in obtaining are achievable. If this just wall art, it looks amaizing. I can only imagine the amount of work that went into this build. Most don't have gumption you just showed in staying a project until completed. You might have just inspired me to build a few of the Prime Diffusers I've designed for some friends. Thanks for sharing... :)

So, I did the math on this. A 4x6 defuser (big enough to be a vid cam background) would have 3456 square inches. Each 1.5 by 1.5 block is 2.25 sq inches, so you'd need 1536 blocks. If you're doing 2, 4, and 6 inch blocks the average block will be 4 inches and you'll get 2 for each linear 4inches of 2x4. So that's 768, 4 inch lengths, or 3072 liner inches of 2x4. If you buy 8 footers you'll need 32 of them. At $3.60 per that's $115 of wood. At 10 pounds per board, minus waste of 15% the finished product would be about 270 pounds.

@rafezetter8003
@rafezetter8003 7 лет назад
It's WAAAY more complicated than that - I have some old wood that was being used for a wooden shelving structure in a warehouse - most are over 5m long; anyway the reason I saved it (bought from the people that were going to reuse it elsewhere - I bought them the eqivalent wood in NEW WOOD and swapped it) is that the old wood is OLD GROWTH WOOD. Even though it's pine the growth rings on it are very close together making it much denser with less knots and better quality overall. By comparison the new wood has growth rings that are much wider - Old wood: 5 rings per 10mm - new wood: 1 (ONE) ring per 10mm. So "premium vintage wood" is indeed a real thing - even with pine.
