I must say Peter. When I was younger I was a daredevil with virtually no fear. I look back and my only regrets are not doing more. Now I am older and crippled up from disease and limited from many activities. After watching your flying vids, I must admit you have balls the size of bowling balls much bigger than I ever had. You only have one go around in this world, Live it to the fullest son, live it.

If you make windscreen into a triangle, it will save you a ton of drag. (or just get rid of it.) The twin configuration is serving you well, in that NO PROP STRIKE. too much deflection in landing gear can aggravate a ground loop. It's called the Wilga Wobble. Travel is ok, but that's why struts are used, so you can get the travel without deflection. (think solid axle VW, or the corvair debocle.) You are likely having issues with ripple current for the ESC's. you can solve it two ways: 1 locate batteries right next to ESC's, So create battery nacelles directly behind motors. (not a bad idea anyway) 2 use lots of LOW ESR capacitors(banks of them) on the inlet wire to the ESC's , located as close to the ESC's as possible on wires + and - coming from the battery. not on the motor side... Would not hurt to increase rudder size, but maybe wait, as moving the CG further forward will help directional stability too. If you need to get the plane to balance, conducer moving the motors forward on their mounts. still think you should have gone with a higher aspect ratio wing, as it's obvious the drag is extremely high. Get rid of the multi rotor props, and find some props with more pitch. They are causing drag at high airspeed, and losing thrust. other than that, looks pretty good!
@BrilliantDesignOnline
@BrilliantDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Excellent comments. Again, on the larger rudder, just add a foam/glass dorsal fin 42-48" x 10-12" that way just keep the rudder no mods.
@johnlucas2037
@johnlucas2037 5 лет назад
I also think the rudder and elevator are undersized... Made the same comment on an earlier video... never got a reply though...
@idontneednostinkingchannel6848
Also agree on vert and horiz stabilizer surface area - not only more authority but just think on what the name implies for a minute. Of course you're always going to be subject to the crosswind effect on any tail-dragger. (em caps are not cheap!)
@FPVREVIEWS
@FPVREVIEWS 5 лет назад
Idontneednostinkingchannel Love your channel name by the way.. The large chord of this low aspect ratio wing will generate a lot of reflex based moment. A fancy way to say that the wing curves down, and it has a big lever. So an oversized horizontal stab will be necessary. Ironically, a low aspect ratio wing and a high aspect ratio wing do not (necessarily) require a different size vertical stab. That is dependent on several other factors (or a combination of them, and their interactions). He has probably already figured it out, or will soon. just will require a lot of stick work, or stick pressure to keep it flying. He has already mentioned the CG issue, and will probably be confused when a change in CG does not fix everything with the flight dynamics. Unless he reads the comment section... anyway, yes, you are right.

I'm liking the battery nacelle idea! Combined with the low ESR caps (also could be fitted in the nacelle) you now have redundant power banks (possible crossfeed?)

I knew that gear would fold when I saw it in the construction video! Flat aluminum bar stock isn't very strong in that orientation. We used to use it for motion picture film guidance-roller support; it's hard to bend in short sections, but long sections bend like butter.

I don’t think it was metal fatigue, flat aluminum is known for its bendyness, and you had no cross member rope, you only had the vertical suspension ropes
@bumpty9830
@bumpty9830 5 лет назад
Right you are. The landing gear beam clearly bent without cracking. To be fair, the cameraman probably couldn't tell from his angle and distance when he said that.
@AlexJoneses
@AlexJoneses 5 лет назад
Matthew Grimshaw yah the aluminum did what it was supposed to, bend, he miscalculated how much force it would take, just needs a cross member maybe with a gas spring and a few brackets
@johnpossum556
@johnpossum556 5 лет назад
Yes. I think those cables on the LG are unrealistic. They'd be more helpful to the forces at play if they were connected more forward of their current location. Like bisect a line between their current connection point and the tip of the aircraft & connect them there. This way when the landing stresses push back they have some movement fore and aft.
@bumpty9830
@bumpty9830 5 лет назад
John Possum The problem here was that the cable was *pushed* instead of being *pulled*. As my theory of elasticity professor liked to say, "don't push on a rope." It was suggested elsewhere in the comments that similarly sprung cables running *up* from the wheels could have prevented this failure, and that may be true. I think no matter what he does with the gear, a ground loop is likely to break shit.
@AlexJoneses
@AlexJoneses 5 лет назад
Matthew Grimshaw yah that’s what i was thing too, too much pressure on one side will easily bend the aluminum. If they had gas pistons and a cross member then it could work, and still retain suspension

Did I mention, "terrible landing gear?" I think bonding some foam (airfoil shape w/ recess) to both sides of the aluminum, and glassing it would toughen it up enough to get the aluminum so it does not yield. Really excellent back of the napkin engineering-the details from the montage are SO cool! Add a long triangular dorsal fin-doesn't have to be real large but will help directional stability with little weight cost and will improve lateral twitchyness a lot. Landing gear: cut off legs leaving the horizontal stubs. Bolt on a 6-8" 4130 1" x 0.058" longitudinally with two 5/16" bolts to horz alum on bottom of fuselage= gear mount pivot. Then 0.875" x 0.065 x 1.25" stubs (fit inside longitudinal tube above) welded to two 0.875" x 0.065 x ~24" to form a 'ladder' with cross members for torsional rigidity with a plate welded at the base for the axle stub (with triangular reinforcements). Use existing spring/cable setup. contact me and I will send you a Fusion360 drawing.
@Mike-oz4cv
@Mike-oz4cv 5 лет назад
Why not simply use tubes with hinges instead of the thin sheets he’s using now? With a parallelogram arrangement he could even ensure that the wheels are always vertical. Another option would be using two mountain bike front suspension forks and mount small bicycle wheels to them. They are built to take heavy beatings and a fork only weighs ~1500g.

Shipwright here, but on my 3rd experimental aircraft build, one tip that might help: the number one error for fiberglassing is a dry layup. You can't tell just from the glass getting clear, you can still have too little resin between the fibers, and the foam core material, the most important part, from a bonding standpoint. You can avoid by wetting out the core material with resin before you lay the glass down. Another really good technique, that can be done cheaply, is vacuum bagging. It will help make sure just right amount of resin is used, and evenly distributed. I always use for projects where weight is important, like planing sail powered dinghies, and composite airplane parts. Keep up the good work.

First of all, congratulations on such a task. Regarding the undercarriage, apart from strengthening in the obvious areas that others have mentioned in the comments I have a question. Usually undercarriage legs protrude below the fuselage not only to clear the body of the aeroplane but also for prop clearance with the aircraft a level attitude. However because your prop clearance is no issue here, why make the undercarriage legs protrude so far? I mean if you shortened them and had a more protruding tail skid to clear the lower fuselage, many of your issues would be resolved. With the aeroplane in a more level attitude to start with, it'd be far easier to rase the tail...

It wasn't a landing gear issue, it was an equipment-failure-induced lack of rudder authority resulting in a ground loop, which should be expected to cause damage. The gear may not have survived a good landing, either, but that's not what happened here.
@AlexJoneses

I have built a couple of small 1 and 2 seat airplanes, you could put a tube between the two axles to keep one from folding in on itself, like the mini max. But then you loose all the spring in the gear. Otherwise alot harder thicker heavier spring aluminum gear.. I would go with the aluminum tube between the wheels. It works well on the mini max ultralight
@rideraaaw2927
@rideraaaw2927 5 лет назад
For some advice for the landing gear, use maybe a magnesium alloy steel. It has a higher shock loading, and maybe a tubular design instead of a straight beam.

He didn't account for the unexpected forces (moment twisting the gear, inward force generated by the twisted gear). In a perfect, frictionless world the gear would be just fine.

@bumpty9830
@bumpty9830 5 лет назад
The flat stock has bending compliance which allows it to act as a spring, dramatically reducing the complexity (and weight) of the gear system. Obviously it didn't do everything it needed to do, but it wasn't a crazy design. Sometimes great ideas are as surprising as bad ones. Try understanding how transistors work some time, and don't be too surprised if that boggles your mind, too. I wouldn't be so quick to assume everything surprising is stupid.

I don't like channels like yours because you absolutely nothing and get subscribers for it I've been trying for over a year to get 100 subs and you have 2000 from nothing it also doesn't help that RU-vid doesn't put my videos in anyone's suggested videos list

Reducing burrs and flashing would make working with aluminium so much nicer.

Shane Stephen - apparently you suffer from some sort of learning disability, so I'll try to be clearer and type slowly for you. These are Peter's own once in a lifetime Wright brother moments, and the recordings of same are unnecessarily forever marred by poorly maintained recording equipment - and this has been going on for months. If that makes me a "sad sad person", then so be it.
@dobledekersoulwrekr
@dobledekersoulwrekr 5 лет назад
john jones What would typing slower do? Dumbass. These videos aren't ruined or harmed in any way. Peter and his channel look at the bigger picture of building lots of cool projects quickly. He doesn't sweat the meaningless specks of dust or any other negligible shit. He gets stuff done.

It looks like ground control is a bit tricky without differential brakes. How about using a V tail mixer to run the motors, and have the V tail pitch input from a single throttle lever, and another servo tester connected to the rudder pedals fed into the yaw input on the v tail mixer. This would give you differential power to the motors from rudder input and hopefully help a lot on the ground with the low airspeed over the rudder. Good luck and keep on building! Brady

I hope your new motors will give you a significant power increase, as you were struggling to rotate. Obviously you know about the landing gear :) Also, I think you should add a spring strut with a wheel for the tail to raise it off the ground and lower drag during takeoff. You are awesome!
