Thank you Joey for the information. Was going to order the parts to build a complex one, then I saw this. Really great. I am setting up a 55 gallon saltwater tank. This will go in my sump right next to the Joey protean skimmer, drawing from the tank from the Joey overflow, returning in a Joey spray bar. Thanks for all the great ideas. Glad I watch your vids. Got your book. Now all I need to do is get your DIY decals. Can't believe how great you are in all your vids. Help me save a lot of money.

changing the media to a K1 or another non bio eating media is kinda where the hobby is starting to lean, but the reactor idea from a bottle is solid

love you vids Joey! speaking from personal experience i removed my biopellet reactor and went to liquid dosing. the reactor works best in a recirculating configuration. you need to have enough water movement to tumble the media, but with more flow you begin to strip the water TOO clean. if you have too much biopellets going on in a while you'll begin getting this nasty pink goo forming everywhere basically slowing your water flow down to almost a halt. liquid dosing of vodka or better yet, NOPOX by RedSea took care of that problem and it's a lot more controlable in that you dose in mL so you know EXACTLY how much you are removing equal to how much you dose. I know you did a dosing video a long time ago, so this would fit in perfectly ;)

If you put the reactor after the skimmer the dead bacteria can feed your filter feeders such as feather duster worms, gorgonians and sponges you might have.

Hey Joey, I reckon don't worry about a skimmer, a tank that size won't need it so long as you do your water changes, which I'm sure you will, but I'd suggest a GFO reactor instead, I've found in a reef system the phosphates are the biggest nutrient issue, given that you'll be running bio-pellets you'll need a skimmer, but personally, a tank that size shouldn't need bio-pellets or a skimmer, water changes should cover that no probs, but I would recommend running GFO as you'll get phosphates leaching from marco rock and lead to some nasty algae outbreaks in a few months. Love your videos by the way. Peace, Corz

Hey joey.. love all your vids. How do you plan to use it in a freshwater set up? As you said it needs to feed into a protein skimmer so all of the waste and dead bacteria doesn't spit into the tank and settle on the bottom. And protein skimmers don't work in freshwater. Just wondering what your plan is on how to keep that out of your tank.

Great video! A couple of questions; 1. This can be beneficial for both fresh and salt water tanks, right? 2. What exactly does it do compared to a filter (except for the mechanical filtration obviously), is this simply for bacterial growth rather than bacterial housing? Thanks!
@wolfinsignia
@wolfinsignia 7 лет назад
wurfag from my understanding rather than an air pump which ammonia and nitrite bacteria thrive in. nitrate consuming bacteria do not like rich oxygen which is why he use a pump rather than air. and should work in both saltwater and fresh water tanks.

I get it for expensive saltwater tanks. For freshwater, just grow a plant. You can have a herb garden on your fish tank and save some money.

Seems like a large pothos plant would do just as well at removing any nitrates as long as stocking isn't too much for the tank, but I guess it might not work well with everyone's scape. On the plus side, the pothos doesn't require replacement every 3-9 months.

Did you know? There has been some places where there is 10+TONS of dead bacteria cells all clumped together, this happens because the individual cells are so tiny and bacteria can colonize very well to eat them and when they do, they die and make the pile bigger

I just wanted to share with you some major disappointment I had earlier this morning. Someone promised to sell me a 48"x48"x19" acrylic drilled tank with accessories (sump, uv filter, all the works )for $300 last night (found listing on craigslist). I got everything prepared for this morning and on my way to this guys house he calls me to say he sold it last night. I was floored. Heartbroken, I don't think I'll find a deal like that again. Totally threw my weekend off. I watch everything you post and share your excitement but I don't have the funds to do the projects. Bigger is better, and this was going to be it.
