This is my second version of my automatic fish feeder. I wanted a more compact version that would be better suited for fish flakes and could hook onto the side of the tank. The mechanism is similar to a coffee grounds dispensor. It basically is a round container with a rotating disk on the bottom. The disk has a hole in it which food falls into. The bottom of the container alao has a hole in it such than when the disk spins the food will dispense out. Inside the container is a plate above the containers hole to prevent all of the food from dispensing at once and an agitator to prevent food from piling ontop of this plate. The motor is a 3rpm microwave tray motor that is attached to a minute accuracy digital timer switch.

This is the perfect plan I was looking for. I picked up an old microwave for free thinking I'd want the motor in the bottom for a fish feeder, and since the motor randomly selects its rotation direction I didn't want a design that uses an auger drill bit or something. AND its for flakes! Thank you.

Hi Jack thanks! There are several parts that are from obsolete inventory from my work such as the motor coupler, the gear (disc with hole in it), the plastic container, and an aluminum bracket. However it wouldn't be too difficult to substitute these parts. A disc with hole in it can be made from wood, the coupler could be a piece of ridged tubing (hose) with pipe clamps. There is a central bolt that is connected to the disk which is from Harbor Freight. The timer is also from Harbor Freight. The plastic piece inside the cylindrical container is simply a laundry measuring cup that I cut up. The mixing stick is a zip tie. AC motor is from a microwave. The rest is scrap wood so the entire feeder can hook onto the side of an aquarium.
