I have a similar set up for one of my filterless ponds. I do recommend using "terracotta orchid pots" for the stands/pedestals. It allows for more water movement and high water volume.

I use Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce. And I have a solar powered aerator. Algae is a problem. I use alagefix to combat that.
@PalJoey-on1yi
@PalJoey-on1yi 4 года назад
Duckweed/Air Exchange. Duckweed is essentially transparent for air exchange. In polluted outdoor ponds or ditches, it's the other organic pollution and algae that is doing the choking. In a situation like this, Duckweed should be no problem. A really interesting addition to this patio pond would be to add one of those ultra cheap solar power water pumps to create a little mini fountain for just a bit of circulation and interest. That's if the collector is separate from the pump and can be placed for a spot of sun.
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
you are absolutely right! I think duckweed may actually help with gas exchange in many cases!

Quick hint for the pot plants. They floated because they were dry & the soil too light. Water them prior to putting in the pond & they should'nt float. The wet soil in the pot should then be heavy enough to weigh them down : ). Love the Jar with the plants inside, great idea . Looking forward to an update on the pond. Looks great.

Great video! I'm hoping to set up a small pond without a filter or pump. You've taken care of the waste/filtration problem with the plants but I'm a bit confused about how the fish have enough pond surface area to get the air they need? Especially with so much duck weed covering the surface? The plans don't look like the leaves go below the surface so I would have thought they wouldn't be good oxygenators.. plus oxygenating plants respire at night and use up the oxygen as well. Apparently, some form of surface agitation or a lot of surface area is more effective than plants? Sorry I'm really new and I'm reading a lot of contradicting information.. and I don't want to send my future white clouds to an early death by accident.
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
Good question. I have found that fish get the oxygen that they need as long as there isn’t a surface biofilm. A biofilm limits gas exchange at the surface. It is definitely more risky to go no tech with a setup like this. You need to start slow, let the system age, then add your fish and monitor their behavior for awhile. Avoid biofilms, also avoid warmer water temps (warm water can’t hold as much oxygen). Surface algae’s are good at oxygenating the water too. I’ve kept loads of fish without flow or surface agitation, it can be done!

I love your mini-pond -- it makes me want to start one of my own!! 👀😂 Also, do you think your school of white clouds will end up breeding over time? If so, would the increased bio-load from the additional white clouds then affect the rate of duckweed reproduction?

Many thanks! Can you please show how you protect the fish from the predators?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
Around here we don't have many predators. The main thing is to ensure that they have a place to hide. I would make a cave out of some stone or broken pots. This way the fish can hide if a predator is trying to catch them.

I have an outdoor pond similar to this that was completely demolished by a racoon in the middle of the night. Knocked over all the planters in the water and dug up all the bottom planted flora, too. Fortunetly, it only got one fish. Unfortunetly, I am rebuilding from ground zero today. Looking to find inspiration that can prevent this. I'm thinking of just elevating the pond somehow. I'm not sure if a decoy animal would scare off racoons

Hey, I'm setting up somethung similar atm, I was just wondering if rhe soil the plants were in from the store is fine to put in the pond, or so I need to replace it with aquarium plant fertiliser? Thanks, nice video
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 года назад
If they are organic plants with organic soil then you should be able to put them in the pond. No guarantees, but that's what I did. If the soil isn't organic then I would suggest replanting them into organic soil. You could also give them a good soak for a week or two before putting them in to help minimize nutrient levels and tannins. 👍

Not very often. If mulm starts to build up I will do a water change. The duckweed does a really good job of keeping the water clean! I might do a couple changes a season that’s it!

Doesn't the pots and planter leech toxins into the water?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
The soil used is organic potting soil. It actually releases tannins which are healthy for the fish. The pots are plastic and ceramic which are generally safe in aquariums. Any toxins that might be released would be handled through water changes. That said, always good to keep an eye on the fish for any odd behaviors. :)

@@Just_Lurking8 ya you could probably get creative and alter them or plug the holes with a rock or something along those lines. Bricks would honestly probably be better because you could make a more stable base. I just used the pots because I had them on hand 😊
