Whether or not the landlord gets any benefit shouldn't even be a concern. Hopefully, the older you get the less time you spend thinking about how to get back at people. It's not easy to think that way, trust me, my list grows longer every day, it's just healthier in the long run. It's something you need to learn how to do, but it's well worth the effort.

Well I very much appreciate you commenting when it's not something you normally do, so thank you! That's very kind! But I also should make it clear that I do not (and have never) had the desire to make everyone happy. I am actually very selfish. I'm very good at setting boundaries, and I'm quite happy in my life I think in large part because I pretty much do exactly what I want to do. Within limits, of course, like I'm not actively a jerk to others around me, but I also *really* don't care what others think, ESPECIALLY not anonymous assholes in the comments. I will never change my content or the way I make videos for them, I will never stop talking with my hands just because people comment that it's annoying. At the same time, if I can get that message through to the more pesky and rude commenters, then they can save their breath and energy typing it out, and I can save my time reading it! Plus I think it's always good to manage people's expectations, be honest and let them know what to expect. Did they come here expecting only house videos, but were just too polite to comment on it? Well now they know that this channel will never be exclusively house content.

@@ShannonMakes LMFAO- Obviously you care very much or you wouldn't have had a mini meltdown over such a meaningless comment. You're the one that decided to turn your life into a video series and put it out for the world to watch and comment on. What did you expect? Then when you read a comment that triggers you, you call the people that watch your videos rude pesky assholes. That's the absolute definition of Projection. Classic Only Child Syndrome. Tantrum away, it's your channel. Nobody's expecting you to change who you are.

Your landlord played himself by using interior paint for outdoors. It doesn't last, so it's more work for him to renew it constantly than if he did it properly in the first place. And he made himself look like an incompetent jerk...

Yay, IKEA trip! I'm always amazed by how many landlords get into owning property, but don't learn how to maintain properties before they do. Which means they wind up spending money and time on things like paint which is not meant for outdoor cement floors. I have these tiles and love them. When i bought my house there was fake grass glued to the deck (shudder). I didn't have time/money to resurface the entire deck, I knew it would need re-waterproofing in a few years and I needed a temporary fix, so I bought these and put them down and they looked amazing. I wish I had thought to varnish them like you did, but even so it took a good few years for them to look grey and sad. When we actually needed to re-waterproof we just took them all up and while the were up we sanded them down and applied an oil deck stain before putting them back - they look like new. I would recommend next time you're in Ikea grab another box and stick them in your shed so you have spares. I found there's the occasional faulty boards that bow or come loose, not many but it's nice to have replacements.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 месяца назад
Yea, I had thought ot get extras too, but fortunately we have a few tiles left over, so I've saved them. And had also considered that they'd be easy enough to sand down and refinish in a few years, if the varnish alone wasn't enough (we will be taking them inside every winter, at least, that should help)!

@@ShannonMakes I know. I live in Florida where most of the complexes have been bought up by faceless out of state LLCs who hire management companies to collect rents and oversee things. The complex manager hires a cheap, less than experienced handyman to take care of minor repairs. I moved out of the last one when I put in a work order request to have the top outside wooden stair repaired because one corner had rotted out. His idea of a repair wasn’t to remove the step and replace it with a new one, it was to put the new one right over the top of the old and toenail it into the sides so that it was now twice as thick as the original. Not a safe bet in anyone’s book.

@@ShannonMakes lol... My very first job was working in a flower shop. I do fresh and silk floral arrangements, too! But the reason I know begonias, is because that was my grandmother's favorite plant. She had them growing all over her yard, and in every planter on her front porch. I was just shocked to see one in that color! The only ones I've ever seen here in the States are red, pink and purple. I didn't know they came in other colors! Yours are beautiful! A couple of things I can tell you about begonias. The are GREAT in indirect sunlight, especially morning light... but don't fare so well in bright, direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist, but don't over water them, and be careful not to get the leaves wet. Begonias can get root/ leaf rot fairly easily if they get over watered. Oh! And you don't want to eat begonias, or let your dog eat the begonias... they are a bit toxic.

When I saw the video title page with a very miffed looking Shannon Makes I knew it was going to be an interesting video. Like always you didn't disappoint. Talk about a win win situation. You cover up the crappy paint job and not more paint chips everywhere. Plus its asceticly pleasing to look at. As Rachel Makesy might say the chefs kiss. Canelle approves and the land lord doesn't benefit from it. When you said you backed yourself into a corner I immediately thought of Karolina Zebrowska when she was finishing the floor in her flat and left the snacks on the opposite side of the room. 😂 I used something very similar to those ties years ago to make a kind of pool deck for my kids to stand on so they wouldn't have to get their feet dirty before climbing the ladder to get in the pool plus it was a place to put sandals so that they didn't have to traverse across the hot ground to the house when they got out. It did its job for several years. Considering they were just cheap tiles from Amazon and I didn't think of vanishing them and sitting in the Arizona sun, which to say can be brutal is sn understatement. We moved the pool into the back yard last year and they came apart trying to free them from the ground and the plants that tried to grow through them. I may do it again this year. Especially since we got a new pool and put in a new location. If nothing else it will help keep the mud factor down. This time I'm going to take a lesson from you and varnish them to help make them last longer. As always another great video, looking forward to next week's.

As the wife of a property manager and the daughter-in-law of the owner of said 200+ properties, let me just say that all are not that way. My FIL won’t rent anything he wouldn’t live in. He has a maintenance crew that responds within 24 hours to most non-emergency complaints save weekends. They are meticulous about upkeep. They do pest control, fire alarm and air filter checks monthly. In fact, when there was a fire in one of three townhouses, the fire investigator said he had never seen such thorough maintenance logs in his career. This is also why they have a waiting list for their properties and long running tenants. I realize this is not the norm though. I agree. We were meticulous in renting out our houses for over 20 years. Generally, just 1 or 2 max at a time. We worked hard to renovate them in the first place and didn't want them to devalue. We also felt if you have a good quality property you have a good quality tenant. Many times the money we had went on keeping our rental property in good order NOT the house we were living in. Our last house that we rented out, we had 3 sets of nightmare tenants that caused thousands of dollars in damage. In the end our rent didn't begin to cover the damage cost. We will never rent out houses again after that. Another good landlord broken and another good quality property not available to renters.

I don't know how things work in America, but in Europe, and particularly in France where I live, the responsibility for maintaining the property (inside and out) falls to the tenant! This seems logical to me, given that it's the tenant who uses the property and therefore wears it out. On the other hand, the landlord is responsible for replacing the boiler if it needs replacing, and for any other maintenance of this kind, which again seems logical to me...

One of my favorite varieties is the Alaska Variegated, but I am also growing Empress- a deep red/ maroon, and Peach colored nasturtiums. They are easy to start from seed too!

I have a heap of these tiles that i bought, gosh almost 20 years ago from Ikea when I moved like you I packed them all up and put them into storage until I worked out what I was going to do with them, lol I totally forgot about them, until this video. It is one of IKEA’s most popular tile really, best part is you can add to it if the new place they are going to be used need more, they have not changed the tile at all. The veranda looks great at least you will get many years of use from them, and yep I too varnished mine, the thought of them just looking tacky after just a few months in the Aussie sun is not a great look. I used a roller for speed as well and the brush for the finished look. What they say work smarter not harder 😹😹😹

I get that you don't want to do anything to benefit the landlord, but that comes with a high cost. A little too high. Seems like it would have been far more cost efficient to rent or even buy a pressure washer to just get rid of the paint altogether. Even just a garden hose with a pressure nozzle would've done the job. or why not just buy a gallon of paint off the mis-mixed paint shelf at Home Depot and repaint it with a fun design? If your landlord is already using house paint as you say, he's not going to care if you do the same. Even outdoor carpet from a carpet store would've been less money. Not that what you did doesn't look great, because it does. There are just many ways to tackle this dilemma without involving your landlord. If your concerned about not getting your deposit back when you move, chances are, if he's that kind of landlord, you won't get back anyway. Seems to me, your main priority was making sure the landlord got no benefit from your work which is understandable but a little too spiteful.

The landlord should maintain the painted balcony floor, for sure. But some of the other comments here are the typical tenant expecting their landlord to upgrade stuff at the landlords expense. That is wrong. When someone moves into an apartment, the landlord needs to pay for anything that is broken, no longer functioning, etc. They don't need to buy anyone an upgraded faucet just because the tenant wants a new one. That's on the tenants dime.
