Not needed if you use an uncoupling membrane like the one from SCHLUTER-DITRA. It is designed to absorb movement from the substrate without transferring it to the tile. Plus it serves as a waterproofing layer that prevents moisture infiltration. I am ready to be a spokes woman for SCHLUTER now😉
