DIY BMW E53 X5 Full Transmission Service (fluid, filter and pan gasket)

When the transmission pan gasket leaks, it's the car telling you that everything needs a service. Replaced the filter and put new DEX III fluid in there for the GM trans on the six cylinder X5's.
Trans pan torque is 10nm or 84 in-lbs.

Remember: Always remove the fill plug first. (as shown in this video) The last thing you want is to remove the drain plug and then not be able to remove the fill plug.

One question one suggestion, what size are the pan bolts, 8mm? Suggestion only thing I've heard is when you drain and fill and replace filter you should have the car up off the ground on all fours, so the wheels can spin and then go through all the shift points to allow the gears to pull up the oil through all areas while the tires spin. Idling and parked will not accomplish this step and it's an important one from what I've heard, also clearing the shift codes may also be important to allow the trans to re learn with fresh fluid. Not sure how critical that is though I've heard it can extend the life on older transmissions

8 or 10mm, I don't have the car anymore. Also, state where you're getting your information from. I'm pulling what I know from Alldata, which is admittedly less concise than the FSM. Still, Alldata makes no mention of having to spin the wheels, only to pause between each gear selection. Alldata also makes no mention of clearing "shift codes", but you can reset throttle adaptations if you feel necessary. I did not do either and had no transmission issues.

@Giggidygiggidy lol my freind that’s some serious technical bullshit if ever I heard it 😂😂 I’m ex mechanic of 40 years experience..just fill the damn thing with oil and start her up, it’s not the space shuttle 😂.. back in the days I thought I was clever and designed a tool to take tensioner of e type jag timing chain , I was excited and showed it to the chief engine builder … he took out a hammer and screwdriver and went whack , !! That’s how we do it here ..lol I was almost in tears 😭 👍🇬🇧❤️👌

I do mine every 25k when I tow and I believe the fluid I use, the manufacturer say 45k, which I change it at when not towing. I do center, rear, front and tranny fluid all at the same time. I have 235k on my e53 transmission that's original.
