DIY BMW E65 E66 Loud Engine Fan Fix 

I have a 2003 bmw x5 3.0i. Aux fan was going crazy loud. Changed thermostat and coolant sensor. Problem fixed. Thank you for this amazing video. So clear and explained thoroughly.

I've got a 2011 328, (78K mi) the fan began to run away from me today, LOL, (what the . . .). I'm seeing the dealer tomorrow and will ask them to replace both sensors just to be safe. I thank you for your video, I didn't have to worry about losing sleep tonight. It's folks like you that help make the world a little better place, thanks.

I have a 2011 BMW 328i and I had the same problem. Mine was at 56k miles and I had been looking for a solution everywhere. I changed the spark plugs, from the original to E3 and I do not hear the noise anymore. Maybe the spark plugs didn't produce enough power? I do not know, but these spark plugs worked wonders. Before I changed them when the car was idling I felt that it would shake; now you can't even tell that the car is on, at some point I thought that maybe I needed to change the oil again but that was not the case. Everything is smooth now! Something simple like spark plugs made that loud almost airplane noise go away!

OK....I'm a brand new, first time BMW owner and I bought it used....2011 X5....and this light came on less than two weeks after purchase! I came here and had major heart palpitations....I've been warned that fixing a BMW is pricey, even though I'm still under warranty. Turns out we were a quart low on oil....that's all! Of course, I know that's a big deal and now that I am under the care of a 20 year BMW exclusive mechanic, it won't happen again. Phew...........close call!

Changing out one sensor at the time wold be my preferred method to analyse the real issue. You could also have got away with changing only one sensor. Now we are "left in the dark" wrt. the actual reason for the fan to stay on at full speed

i have a question i have a 2000 bmw x5 4.4i it overheated on me then turned off on me well driving it then it eont start has crank but no go i checked the gas line and has no presure i could find the gas relay to check if it went out can you help me thank yOu

It happen to my e46 m3 also but it use to cool the condenser and the mechanic who fill up the ac gas overpressure and the fan kicks in max speed all the time. Thought the fan was bad but actually the ac gas need to be set to its normal pressure range and it back to normal after that

Hey chris from DIY i have a 745li but when i unlock the car with the remote key the rings light or angel light they dont light on and i just watch your video and i see your car off with the lights on I MEAN on the video they are flashing what can i do to my car for that?

very cool....I am having the same issue on ly 2009 X5. It started yesterday while we were out and the car actually went into Limp mode. We stopped, shut it down for about 2 mins, started it back up and were able o make it home. I am going to try this first.

Hi. BMW 2007 E92 diesel. My is showing the overheating Symbol and straight after it's going into limp mode. The fan comes on full blast and continues even after the engine is stopped for maybe about 10 minutes (on full blast). Any idea on what it could be ? Even on cold start it's showing over heating straight away and fan comes on. A little period in the middle where it was running fine then the problem came back.

where did you buy the coolant temperature sensor, you mentioned the water pump was a dealer purchase.

I have an e46 and I changed the lower radiator temp sensor and my fan is still blowing extremely loud, I purchased the coolant sensor and have read its located under my intake manifold and I tried replacing it but didn't end up reaching it, so much to move out the way and was scared of damaging more than the sensor itself. Do you know if the sensor on the e46 is under the intake manifold or elsewhere? Thanks..... BTW how much would this cost at the dealer to get done?

My e92 328 2008 has very loud fan noise at startup at cold and sometimes it takes 15 min to go off and sometimes only 3 min or when I shutdown and restart the engine.. i changed the water pump and the thermostat but that didnt work.. Is it clutch ? Or sensor? What kind of sensor please help

I keep getting p1111 Engine Coolant Temperature Radiator Outlet Sensor where would this be located? Ive changed the thermostat, lower coolant temperature sensor and i still keep getting this fault , can anyone shad some light for a 2003 bmw 745li , thanks in advance

My guess, it would have been the lower one. I guess this sensor is outside OBD II. You could do a video of scanning your entire car with INPA or simular.

bro mine is doing the same thing but mine doesn't run non stop full blast like yours, mine will wined up and be full blast for like 5 seconds then come down, waits like 5 seconds, wineds up again full blast for a few seconds then comes down.. kinda like an alarm on a fire truck lol... do u think it's the same issue??? please help

My 2006 325i is having the same issue, but mine only does that when I start up the car in the morning or at night after leaving it parked at work for 12 hours. Once that happen if I turn the car off and on again it go back to normal so what I'm trying to say it's not on high speed all the time. Was you car the same or it was on high speed all the time? I had my water pump checked and it's in a good condition, should I start with the temp sensor? Thank you much

Hi Chris - Thanks for the video! I have a 2012 F10 520i and had this problem for quite sometime now. Dealership changed thermostat and it was fine for a couple of months, now its back! It happens even when the engine is cold. Took it to dealership again, they checked and said thermostat again!!! I am starting to wonder if it is actually the thermostat or maybe they are just clueless!!! Any recommendations?

I have a similar problem with my VW Polo. The fan runs very loud the moment I start the engine and stays that way until I turn the engine off. I will try and replace the temp sensor.

Your lower temperature sensor was reading high so your car thought the coolant temp returning to your car was too high and so engaged the fan at full speed to aid the radiator in reducing its outlet temp

I had that problem changed thermostat and waterpump that solved the problem

2007 BMW328xi The first time my fan sounded like a jet airplane it also said it was overheating. it shut power down and I immediately had towed . All fluids were fine with no real apparent overheating..so it was back to normal fan speed for couple weeks then again..it started yesterday...seems as I start to hear then I slow down or actually I have turned off car then back on for a normal fan speed ...would you start with the fan sensor & work backwards....Need your thoughts please help

I have bmw e66 745 fitted with electric fan the full dan speed not working so the temperature reached 109C before it never pass 105c so i want to know is it temperature sensor of the fan issue

Hey Chris, I have an 03 745 and I have the same issue with the fan constantly on. What I noticed on mine is that the AC compressor clutch is engaged with the AC off. I have a leak on the AC because I was trying to add Freon but the gage did not do anywhere. Just like you, I am trying to figure this out. I also have a loud squealing which seems to come from the power steering pump, but still unsure. It comes one when I come to a stop after driving for a while. If I turn off the car and restart it, it goes away. These two things are driving me nuts, but I will find them. Any help, will be greatly appreciated...

I have a 11 335xi, the last week I noticed the radiator fan would kick up and spin in full blast and stop and repeat keep in mind its been -30 F up here driving it around and it would do this parked. I had the AC blasting so I turned it off and sure enough it didnt turn on once for my little test, I only left it off for about 5 minutes and kind of went about my day not thinking about it. I dont drive my car much so today I hopped in and it was a nice day 30 F and me and my girl went for a little cruise probably like 45 minutes, just going 30 most the time, hopped on the interstate for 5 minutes went 70, I took the exit and soon the AC started to get a little chilly I didnt pay too much attention but noticed, drove like 5 minutes home going like 30 and at this point it was blowing cold air and I was confused, asked my girlfriend if she felt it just to make sure I wasn't crazy. Almost the same time I asked her the iDrive system pops up saying warning! high engine temperatures! I glanced at my oil temperature and it looked perfectly normal then half a block later I got emergency engine heat from iDrive and lost almost all control from the accelerator. I immediately pulled it over and turned it off and sat there for about 15 minutes, turned it back on and it kind of kicked and started very rough and carefully drove it home. Any recommendations?? I appreciate if you read this I really do, theres no mechanics within 4 hours that will look at BMW's where I live so its either fix it myself or have it towed to a dealer/mechanic, thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem on my 07 550i right when I start it the loud fan is on, then some days it doesn't come on then again it will come on its weird

I just put a new water pump and after putting it I got the loud fan noise. Then I fixed the thermostat and still doing it. Today I went and got the two sensors after watching this video and after putting in the sensors I still have the loud fan noise. Not sure what else to doo. Any suggestions

hey Chris, I need some help. I have the same problem with the same car. I replaced the coolant/fan sensor and still no luck. I disconnected the water pump sensor and thermostat one at a time and did a loop relay on it just to see if one was working and the other wasn't. But still the fan is at 100%. Do you think it might be the fan at this point or should I still replace the other sensors? Thanks man I appreciate it. Also the link for the thermostat doesn't work. Thanks.

My 2007 BMW 750li is running hot. The car ran hot and the reservior burst. The repair shop said it was the fan, so I had it replaced, but that was not the issue. I have a loud fan after being on for a few minutes. There is water being thrown from the front driver side and it is still running hot. I think it could be a bad water pump hopefully. Any ideas?
