Part 1: Follow Espen The Boatbuilder build a C.G. Petterson inspired modern boat from the beginning to the boat is on the water.
Motor boats were catching on in the early 1900's, and in Sweden the Rudderman was CG. Pettersson. Engines in those days were heavy, and had low power. The way to get speed beyond 5-6 knots, was to design very narrow boats that would glide through the water with minimal resistance. Most were built from mahogny and was made to order from the upper class who held races during summer.

Great project! If you or your friend ever visit Newcastle make sure you go to the museum that houses the Turbinia. It was a boat like the ones you showed, it was launched in 1894 and was the the first ever steam turbine-powered steamship. It was 32 metres and narrow, and could sail at 34 knots, and was the fastest boat in the world at the time.

I just checked it out on google... you've got a good point. Long, narrow, sleak hull... Maybe this CG Petterson got inspired from somewhere else :) Espen has come a far way and closed the bottom now. Not enough material for a new video yet, but we're working on it.

@@MartinWoodStudios Great, look forward to seeing the progress. At that time there was a ferry to Bergen, Oslo, and I think Gothenburg to Newcastle, so perhaps he came over and seen it. I first watched your videos and subscribed when I was looking for an owl nest box video. Lykke til Espen med sjøbåten (Norwegian level B1 ie. Engwegian, not quite reached Norglish yet) 🤣🤣🤣

Hi, i saw the turbinia on Lindybeige's channel😊. Yes, young Pettersson may have heard about the Turbinia. From the twenties on, faster boats were using hard chines. A sharp angle between bottom and hull sides. Before this, most had a rounder shape. It is more effective at displacement speed, and gives a softer ride. However, stability and high speed performance is better with a hard chine. btw i'm the builder:)

@@1972espen Great work. I'll keep looking out for updates to see your finished boat. Perhaps after you have finished, the next challenge could be to to make a working replica of the Turbinia.🤣 Even a smaller 25% scale would be impressive. If you ever visit Newcastle, make sure you go and see it, as I am sure with your boat building hobby, you would find it really interesting.

@@njpringle I'm definately going sometime. I'm facinated with this period in history. The industrial revolution, brunel, and the fast development in transport. Even a 1/4 size turbinia would be an ambitious task😅.
