I may not live in Norway but I live in the Yukon. This is exactly the project build I needed to see. Thank you for all your hard work posting this video.
Just curious if using treated lumber and stains or lacquered finishes being toxic to the dweller of these boxes? Wondering if it would be better to use a whole section of a hollowed out tree with a roof and floor, protected with linseed oil, or is linseed oil toxic to them as well?
Treated lumber is no go, if its a stainer with only spirits - ok, I would avoid lacquer, looks unnatural, Linseed oil is often processed with terpentine(so check closer), I dont know but I guess owls will smell it. - you could use the most friendly paint u find and give it 6months to vapor off toxins before hanging it up. - or burn the box(charing, zugi ban method), brush off crust and apply a layer of tungtree oil(find a good one) or a food friendly oil used for cutting boards or the likes. A box made purely of a hollowed out tree will be very heavy. I dont recommend it.
Really nice box,one any Tawny owl would be proud of. Im going to be setting up a Little Owl box in my Woodland soon. Look forward to seeing your progress. Best wishes from Devon Uk.
This is a great sauna build video.. finally inspired me to start on my build.. I wondered if I could ask you about the glass, is it double glazing? I was thinking I would just get 8mm tempered glass and use this video to match the framing technique you used. But worried about heat loss, what kind of temperatures can your sauna get up to with that window? thanks and again, GREAT work and great to see the family involved.
Hey! Im no window expert but I belive this is a double glass window and measures around 1,6cm or so... I think 8mm will be on the thin side even though it is tempered - thinking heatloss and wobbly(if big) - easy to break, but heatloss depends on how big your window is... small will be just fine I guess. My window measures around 160x160 or something in that direction. You can oversize your sauna oven to weigh up for a "leaky" build. In my case my oven gives my sauna over 100 celsius in -15celsius... but I prefer it at 80-85c. Very happy with my build and the water evaporates from the tiles :) Each oven comes with a m3 that they are built to heat.. in my case Harvia Pro 20 gave me 8-20m3 and I built my sauna at around 14,5m3 inluding the window. (the window you have to add it's square meter to the calculations) ex.. my build I guess was around 12m3(room) + window 1,6x1,6= 2,56m2.... so 12m3 + 2,56 = 14,56m3 and well within my ovens capabilities. hope this helps you and be well and build well :D
@@MartinWoodStudios Thanks so much for this awesome reply.. I went for the Narvi 16 and also going 12m3.. window would be about a similar size to yours.. wow 100c in -15 is mega! again, great work mate.. thanks so much.
I just subscribed because I love watching fun makers from all over the world. Also, I just realized that since I am also already subscribed to The Swedish Maker and to Jesper Makes, I am now subscribed to makers from the big 3 Viking countries. 😀
Cool, but don’t call them voodoo chimes. That’s not what they are, they are bone chimes. That is disrespectful to the people who actually practice voodoo in their culture.
Sounds weird man. You mean I can't play around with words for fun..? What a dull world you want to live in. I think you are too sensitive to what others might or might not find disrespectful.
Great videos!!! I've just discovered you on youtube and watched a few of them. I live too close to an urbanised, built-up area, but there is one type of owl I have seen and love, and I intend to make an owl house, too. And a bat house, of course. (One more question: are you Swedish? Or maybe Norwegian?)
Hey! Thank you for the sweet words. I'm Norwegian. If you build a house make sure it's the right specs for the owl you intend to house, so get the binoculars up for some reconnaisanse. Best of luck 🍀
Martin, you are building a level floor, but from what I see on RU-vid, people are building a slope for the water to escape. Do you have problems with draining water?
If I had wooden floor I might need a sloped floor. My thought was that I didnt want the hassle of sloping it and I could mop it up instead. But I didnt need to, the tiles become quite warm and the water evaporate. I think because of the 1cm insulated plate under the tiles it leaves enough so the tiles become warm enough for this to happen. If you have more Qs dont answer here but write a new message because yt does not give me a notice if u answer this. Good luck!
Awesome video. Did you end up closing in the outside/ side openings of the roof? With a "soffit" or pest/bird guarding of some kind? Thanks for any info!
@@willgunter9356 the net was some sort of glassfiber material. I didn't want to use metal because I thought there might be some condensation, but I was probably to careful. I hope I answered you Q
Thank you, Martin! Amazing video and very exciting! I'm planning to build a Sauna and will use your video as a guide with some minor changes. What kind of glass are you using? Someone told me that window glass should be tempered to be used in a Sauna, another person told me that glas should be thermo the same are used in the patio doors. I just wondering if we could use "ordinary" glass from modern plastic windows.
Hi Sergi! The glass is a normal 2-layered glass from an ordinary window used in houses. (it works very well). No need for tempered or thermo if you place it more than 50cm from oven(thats my safety distance, it might work fine with closer but I have not tested). This had a wooden frame and I had to remove it from the frame because of the paint. Never use treated wood or painted wood in a sauna. In my country they give these windows away for free when changing to 3-layered modern windows that probably is called thermo windows.
А в следующий раз нас ждёт увлекательное видео, как заваривать чай. И поставил ты печку неправильно. Кто дымоход сразу на улицу тянет? Всё тепло вылетит. Где каменка? Где бак с водой, который будет тепло от трубы забирать?
I've got the same story. I have a Barred owl that hangs around the yard at the bird feeder. My wife talks to her . She's doesn't seem scared much of us. She scared me one nights 😅 long story. Im gonna check and see if this will work. I can make adjustments.
@@MartinWoodStudios more then see them , often is about hearing them , i just installed my second nest yesterday, and they arrived after 6 hours , incredible...I think they might be there but not coming probably due to the angle of how is facing the nest...maybe...who knows...but my first nestbox been untouched for months...
