DIY build of the dangerous dangleberry lamp

It's a while since I've built a light, so here's an interesting one based on a cluster of repurposed Xmas lighting caps suspended from different heights.
Although this version uses simple circuitry to allow it to be plugged directly into a mains voltage lamp holder, you can also make a safer version with lots of parallel stems with a 150 ohm to 220 ohm resistor per LED for use with a USB power supply or 4.5V battery pack.
The wide viewing angle concave lens LEDs I used are notoriously difficult to find on eBay. I got mine as a bag of 1000 from Aliexpress, but be aware that quality and colour are not guaranteed. In this application standard 5mm LEDs can be used, and if the sockets are fitted then they can be swapped as desired.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of RU-vid's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

I have no practical knowledge of electrical work, but I swear whenever I watch one of your videos I feel like I could *maybe* tackle a small creative project and not immediately expire. Tall narrow things often detach easily from 3D printer beds because there is a lot of leverage. Adding a brim can help, but printing it in a different orientation is usually the better solution (although this may affect the finish). Adding supports can help too, but they also mar the final finish.

You don't have to "heart" this mr.Clive,You're keeping a substantial qty of technical folks sane in this time and it's appreciated Side note, I'm a bit less Clive and more AvE, experience wise. I'm a mechanical guy (millwright) that works on electrical things occasionally and your videos have helped me understand a bit more of the magic pixies. Last night I installed a new 12 volt cigarette lighter to use a bluetooth fm transmitter in my older farm truck. The alternator wine coming through the speakers was insanely loud because of the dirty power being supplied. I immediately referenced knowledge that I've learned in your videos that capacitors smooth AC, which this noise obviously was. I had a fat 50 volt electrolytic capacitor in an old box of electrical stuff and installed it on the positive and negative supply behind the lighter socket and the alternator wine noise 100% disappeared. I was very proud when it worked.

When I needed a large bulb for my steam punk light I made last year I made my own. I used an old base from an old CFL bulb as that had the bayonet fitting and a short plastic skirt fitted to it. I used the circuitry/PCB from an old unused led light which fitted perfectly in the old CFL base. I went shopping at Poundland and found a tapered cylindrical vase that had a small neck which fitted perfectly inside the old CFL fitting and was a similar colour to the old vintage style bulbs. A bargain 50p! I then brought three £1 garden lights as they had short strings of micro LEDs in them. Removed them and connected the three strings in parallel with to the PCB, bit of glue and hey presto, a large vintage style looking light bulb! Just gives off a nice warm glow and draws just 12mA. I do have other self made lights lighting my home thanks to Clive!

I can see a multicoloured version being rather attractive at Christmas time, maybe even a bunch above the dining table. Definitely better than the one that came with the kit for the JST XH clone connectors, a bit harder for the dupont ones because you've got to crimp twice to get the full length. very nice. I have several hanging Ikea lamp-mounts and I may try this. I had thoughts on doing 'production.' I have an offset screwdriver w a hook for twisting wire loops. if while laying out the loops you mark the descending wire with the sharpie just above your turn, then use the screwdriver to twist each one as you form the loops, it will all be marked and neatly arranged for you before you start crimping. you can then have a consistent pattern to mounting into the mini-molexes. also, if you put the ziptie through the top of the loop instead of around, it will be 'in-line' holding ½ as many wires, prevent one from being pulled through, and you can tuck the head inside the loopspace for neatness. just a thought.

I used to work at a wire harness shop where we used a wide variety of manual crimping tools. If you want to make the crimp good, using the tool that is compatible with the metal contact is ideal. If you can't do it, you can always follow up with some solder to increase the holding force and make the conductivity of the mating with the wire better. If you want to check into compatible crimpers: TE Connectivity has a good selection if you know your terminal/contact type (they are pretty pricey though)

I like this, have been thinking of making my own LED lights for a while now and this is a nice idea. As for safety, I don't think that is an issue as long as the housing is secured properly into the lamp base. I'd be tempted to bond or otherwise fix it in somehow. We sort of forget that traditional light strings for Christmas trees in 240V land were usually just a series chain of 12V incandescents (for 20 lights) or 6V (for 40, for the posh people who had big trees) with single-insulated cable, wired directly to a mains plug! I still have several such sets and they haven't been used since I adopted these cats, just the low-voltage LED string. Might be an idea to twist after assembly to make it easier, that way you might be able to fit a couple of LEDs in the housing? .. or a bigger bunch of lamps. Oh, one other thing .. I'm guilty of having twisted the strands prior to crimping, force of habit which I'll try to avoid after this reminder! I guess that's ususlly fine, although unnecessary, for ferrules though?

Supposedly you're not supposed to twist before use in ferrules either, but I do, to stop the strands catching.

good timing on my part lmao. since last reply to another in another vid i said its probably more fun to make my own lights over the store bought trash for using cheap parts or over driven them usually.

I think those little neons would look nice in that arrangement.

14:00 I like the resistors as a box. Makes them easier to differentiate from an inductor and can easily be turned into a fuse.

Very pretty. I would look nice with slow colour change LED's.
