DIY bulb with toilet floater. Ep.62

In a huge storm the starboard hull slammed on the key, because of which we lost the bulb that protected it. So, now we built a new one from pvc pipe, a toilet floater, fiberglass and epoxy. I dreaded this job, but with trying and trying again, and again, it actually turned out fine!

The GF cloth or chopped matt are made with a 'glue' in it so it holds its shape when you are handling it. When you apply the resin the 'glue' is dissolved allowing the GF to then form to the part.

Overbend everything and then pressure the tube up to the hull and heat and then form back to the hull and grind or cut to fit . Then wrap it and put cone on the front. Maybe consider filling void with som type of waterproof foam. Watch as some plastics give off phosgene which is a very poisoners gas when heated !

"Nothing is symmetrical on this boat" ... haha, yep. That was one of the first things to discover, when I started to refit Thelxinoe. In all those years rebuilding stuff on board, I did not discover a single right angle. Not even the mast is situated on the centerline, but 3cms off to port and the starboard in-keel-watertank sits a full 12cms further forward, than the port one. So those guys at the Dean shipyard were doing a rather decent job on making those boats seaworthy, but accuracy was definitely not one of their strongpoints 🙂 btw:Good job. I'm not too sure, if PVC and Epoxy will stick together in the long run, but with enough layers of fibreglass on top, it might not matter anyways.

This is a variant of how a person would measure a swimming pool liner but without going into how to A/B an object in space I would measure equally off each bow point and drive a steak in the ground. Now measure from that stake or point in space to each hull point or change in contour then transfer to the other side.

YOU ARE INCREDIBLY RESOURCEFUL Whoa !!!I do not where you are situated but you use the metric system the bizarre north american way, all in mm personally i use the unit most in tune with the job, in your case the cm (if I ask how long the piece you would guess in cm approximations) so your pipe is 20 cm diameter and your length 1 meter and14 cm said "a meter fourteen" or simply "one fourteen". Conclusion 2345 mm would be said "two thirty four point five)Hard to believe but once adopted it make a huge difference in mental representation. Not sure I explained my point clearly ,if only one person gets it it is progress. Thank you for sharing your video.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
Thanx, man! 🙂 Well, you know, we have a tight budget, so I need to be resourceful, otherwise we couldn't live the life we are living right now. But about the millimeters, nowadays that's the international standard. With technical work you actually only use millimeters, not centimeters. Never. So doing centimeters is actually the opposite of progress. In practically all technically advanced countries technicians will raise there eyebrows if you start talking centimeters when talking about something technical.

I have never seen anything like this on a Catamaran, interresting
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
Haha, me neither! :D Normally you only see this on big cargo ships. It's for a better fuel economy, and in our case, it could function as a bumper against collisions with floating objects. And concrete quays 🙂 Otherwise the hull would have been damaged.
@rushd45
@rushd45 Год назад
Another way of getting the dimensions right is to use some simple cad software, sketchup, freecad etc of the existing bulb and the mirror the drawing and there you go.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
That also would have been a problem, Rush :-) Like I said in the video, this boat is not symmetrical. Left and right hull are not perfect mirrors of each other. Far from it. When you look at the shape of the hulls (although they are strongly built) the moulds must have been really amateuristic.

When spraying foam always provide openings for air and material to escape otherwise you will have air pockets.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
I guess you are right :-) That's what I love about comments on our videos - I am learning new things from them. There has been coming out so much foam in between the tube and the ball, that I presume that most air pockets are gone.
@MonkPetite
@MonkPetite Год назад
Why I wonder. Do you think it makes the ship faster ? Obviously the job is not bad. Super keen and cleverly done. Also their is more up floatation at the bow what can beneficial. The bow wil dip less. But still I wonder if it works out for you. Well try to fit a sonar in it .. one forward looking and one downward.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
They were original on this type, Monk. I guess it has several functions, although I don't know with which intentions the factory added them. Maybe more floatation in the front, maybe for a little protection against whales and floating containers? On big freighters it is done to lessen the fuel costs. With those large bulbs on them it should bring down fuel consumption with approximately 16%, but I doubt this is the case with our submarine with sails 🙂
@magpiefrogfrom2556
@magpiefrogfrom2556 Год назад
Bow of boats create a wave pattern along and above the waterline of the hull = friction. The bulb hits the water first and greatly reduces, flattens the wave = less friction. It's a bit like the up fins they are adding to the tips of plane wings in recent years, efficiency, less drag.

Great way to make the mould for the bulb. What is the purpose of the bulb? Could you have just taken the other one off?
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings Год назад
You need to be inventive with an old boat like this, Ronan, haha! The purpose? Those big freighters and tankers have them for fuel efficiency. I read that can save up to 16% fuel. But on our boat? Maybe the same reason, although they are quite small. But maybe for more floatation, because the original design possibly did too much horse back movements? I don't know. Yes, I could have removed the other one, because they are not part of the hulls, but they are a good protectionn against flaoting containers and whales 🙂

But when we got back from the Netherlands last month, we brought a few kilos of fibreglass cloth.
@TheBeaker59
@TheBeaker59 Год назад
The coated glass tapes like that are not well suited to Epoxy as they don't soak up the resin being coated either in PVC or PVA of various types. They are strong but don't shape as well, wet out, or as you found lay against the surface so standard uncoated glass cloth becomes denser stronger and naturally shapes better. What you have done will work but as you discovered its allot of work and messy to shape. Was that drywall or plaster tape you used? Not meant as a criticism of you, we are all learning on this journey through life :) thanks for the video.
