Ok, maybe my box is not Montessori at all: it is not made of wood, and it doesn’t go in the simplicity/one self-guided task principle that Montessori toys apply… Nonetheless, it offers lots of opportunities for training fine motor skills, cause and effect association, manipulation…
And it might keep being interesting for an older kid, providing a way to see how color combination works (there is an RGB LED with individual switches to control the Red, Green and Blue individual parts) and a miliamperimeter that shows the box’s electricity consumption in real time - and it looks like the console of a Space Ship!

Awesome! I was looking for old controller units for my kids to play with but I think this is a better idea. Two questions, please: where did you get that dial switch from and how did you hook it up; also, how did you feed so many wires into the multimeter? Great, inspirational project.

You’re a wonderful daddy. There’s no toy better for a child than one made with love. Hang onto to it. She may outgrow this but, she’ll have it around for her children and to see, daddy makes toys with love.

🤗 Oh, thank you so much! I loved your words ❤️ it is true: it was made with lots of care and she still likes to play with it - from time to time (she is almost 6 now). Of course, there are days I don’t feel like a “wonderful daddy” - patience runs short when I am stressed and tired, and she demands a lot of patience 🤣

@@GeekDetour Parents are always hard on themselves. Just like our children, we have good days, great days, and not so good days. Some days we have lots of patience and others can be little to none. I kinda want to make a box like this but wasn't looking forward to all the drilling ... then I remenbered I have a 3D printer a little 3D modeling skills. I might just be able to model something up and simply 3D print a box. Solder up some wires from switches to LED's etc and voila! Can't wait to get started on my project ;)
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 28 дней назад
Oh, absolutely! I made this video a few months before I bought my first 3D Printer - after that every now and then I think to myself how faster it would have been just 3D Printing it instead of drawing by hand, drilling, cutting, filing… An even more “warmer” result would have been using a laser cutter and make it in plywood. Good luck! Have fun!

Loved your project. Glad to see it got some good use. I started making one of these sort of busy boards for my son, but the part I did not realize was how fast he would out grow it. In fact he out grew it before it was complete. You have to move fast as kids grow fast.

I feel really lucky that I could use a whole week to do it all non-stop (and another week to edit/publish the video) - otherwise it is very likely I would have faced the same fate of yours! Awesome! Very impressive. Many decades ago, I built a box much less impressive for my nephew. I didn't know it until a long time later, but he, then his brother and sister that came along later, got a lot of play out of it. My sister gave it back to me when the youngest was a teen. You might want to put something on there to secure the analog meter cover. Little fingers may pry it off.
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 5 лет назад
What a nice story, Steve! Thanks for sharing! You are totally right: she tried several times to open the meter, but I had hot-glued the cap even before I presented the box to her 🤣❤️ I wish my box could stand through times as yours did - let’s see 😊
@AlienRelics
@AlienRelics 5 лет назад
@@GeekDetour Oh, it had wear and tear. It was mostly parts from Radio Shack in a plastic box. One of the toggle switches just flopped back and forth, and one of the pushbuttons had the top fall off. I'd also put two bare wires next to each other with a 555 timer so it would click and growl when touched. No meters, though. That was an expensive part, back then. Lots of LEDs, beepers, and even a doorbell sound. Yours is much more impressive.

Hi Albert 👋 If your daughter is still a kid, you would be surprised how they seem to like these boxes - my daughter is 3 and 1/2 years old now and she still plays with this box. Of course one can go 115% insane and build this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j6zseFi070E.html

Hello Jenna! Well, you can do it :) You can make it simpler or crazier, it is basically a repetition of LED + Resistor + Interruptor Switch circuits. Here is a video of a much simpler box: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tSgGExrK-lo.html and he made a very detailed instructions page with schematics: www.instructables.com/id/Childs-Toy-Light-Switch-Box/

Thank you Riza, it means a lot to me, I appreciate! Well, there might be an explanation for the good text: I am terrible at improvisation... so all my videos begin with a text: I write them, then a few days later I revise them again. Then I record my voice-over, reading the text, and finally I edit the video to match what I read :)

I suppose kids might enjoy these light-switching-panels for many years, so, you are not late! It can get more fancy with Arduino: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5s1YJAz8STc.html and totally insane like this "mission control": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j6zseFi070E.html
