DIY Campervan Pull Out Bed Build & Install Guide VW T4 Camper DIY Sofa Bed Build

In this detailed video I show how I construct and install my pull out bed. The bed is made from solid sturdy timer which I purchased from a timer merchant but this type of bed can easily be made from reclaimed wood. The top of the bed has pull out slats to extend the width of the bed from a single to a double in seconds. I have improved on the general campervan pull out bed by adding ply sheeting to the lift up section of the frame, meaning the extending slat bar can never fall through the bed frame and makes sliding the bed frame in & out so much easier. The campervan bed frame design is pretty simply to follow and install and the campervan bed plans can be made to your own measurement requirements. This camper bed design has been installed in my VW T$ Transporter van but is suitable for any type of camper conversion where a bed is required. The campervan bed construction only took a day to build and fit with some finishing touched added at a later time. The surround of the camper bed frame has had a ply fascia and carpeted to neaten up the look of the bed and the internal storage is vast. I chose not to fit a R&R rock and roll bed as I rarely have more than oen passenger and they are generally not as comfortable as a proper bed frame so this style of camper bed suits my needs and is considerably cheaper too. I hope you find the video useful and if so, please rate it and Subscribe to follow my conversion of this van.

Very nice improvement on a common bed design, I'll be attempting this style myself.

@@TheCampervanBuilder I am considering buying a cargo van and converting it to a trailer. I have no experience but there appears to be lots of resorces on u tube and books etc. My plan is to sell my house and live in it. Videos by people like you are very helpful. My plan is to make it very simple but with the ability to live off grid or hook into shore power.

Very informative. You make this look so easy. I have a Transit Connect that I'm wanting to set up with a comfortable bed. Right now I am just using a cot,which while comfortable enough, looks too temporary. THANKS!!

Couple of design issues. The gaps between the slats are far too wide (once in the pull out position) and once you put the mattress/cushion on top when you want to lift it you have nowhere for the mattress to rest while its open (it will be squashed against the wall). If anyone else uses this design all you need to do is put a piece in along the wall that is the same width as the thickness as your mattress and problem solved. Apart from those thanks for sharing.

Hi have you seen the new guide for camper van conversion you have to have two windows on one side of the van not counting the drivers or passengers door windows . And a Awning rail it dose not say you have to have a awning it’s just says a full length of the van . And must have a seating aria with table and there must be graphics on both sides of the van

This is awesome video, thanks so much for sharing, think this is the design I’ll go for but will make the slats larger, I’m quite a heavy bugger so covering more area I think will make it a little more sturdy aha

Hi great video, where did you get your bed cushions made up and where did you buy the legs for the bed? Thanks

They were caravan cushions but I’ve made my own since on my channel using foam, the legs were from b&q

18:43 - The gaps are too large my friend. Mattress will sink into spaces. A few more slats would have been perfect. Nice build! This is still the best design for a van bed.

@@TheCampervanBuilder I think he means it will damage the mattress over time. If the slats are wider the mattress can't droop in the gaps.

Looking forward to starting my own conversion soon, can you stand up inside your van? I'm about the same height and am wondering whether a high top might be a better purchase for this reason!
@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 5 лет назад
I can just about stand up straight in a high top and I'm about 6'3, I started with a standard height van and a week away didn't end well for the back & neck, no such issues with a high top.

thanks for posting this. I'm curious, what stops the outer edge of the pull out section from collapsing when you lie on the bed and your weight shifts over the area supported by legs ?

The inner slide bar secures the pull out section with the legs taking the weight of the other side, works a treat

Love this bed. Way cheaper than a rock & roll bed. 1 quick question. When be bed is extended, what stop the the pull out frame which is now in the centre falling in with the weight on it. I may have missed something somewhere.
@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 7 лет назад
Thanks, one half of the bed has solid static slats so if the bed is pulled out, half the bed is solidly secure and the pull out section can't fall through the frame due to the ply I have fitted underneath and the extending section also sits on the main support frame too, so there are no issues with it falling in/through etc and I can confirm this having been away over the bank holiday and it worked great, re-watch it in detail if you need to see how its constructed and fitted together

hi could you give me a list of materials required for this bed and size how did you manage to fit the fridge at the end is it an over the wheel arch fridge
@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 6 лет назад
The fridge has its own cupboard made that sits over the wheel arch with a video of that on my channel, I list what materials I use in the video but it’s just lengths of timber from a local timber merchant with old caravan bed slats used for the pull out section.

Great video,just making the decision to do a self build myself,like the idea of this type of bed thanks for showing us.Where can i find the list of requirements of the Dvla for registering as a camper please ?
@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 7 лет назад
Thanks, lots more useful videos on my channel on how to convert a van, google should provide a detailed answer but generally you need a fixed cooker (no portable stoves) and water, a fixed bed or seating that converts into a bed of at least 6' in length, storage space - whether under the bed of cupboards, a table that attaches to a fixed point in the van and you also need at least 1 side window. All the above need to be in a fixed position to the van. These are the main big 5 requirements, everything else is optional, take photo's, send them a nice letter and the V5 and they re-register it for free

@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 7 лет назад
Thanks, DVLA costs nothing to re-register as a camper, just fulfil the requirements and send the documentation along with photographic evidence of the conversion and they will re-register it for free as long as there are no other changes required like ownership or change of address etc.
