Another option is to wait until the cane fully stretches and dry, then add the trim. Great job overall.👏

Perfect DIY job, we produce decorative stainless steel wire mesh, some of them are perfect for cabinet inserts, but this cane mesh looks more natural and stylish.💯

Very thorough & detailed- thanks for describing & showing each step and explaining why something is important- bc that helps one learn & understand, for the next project… it helps one become more capable & confident abt creating & problem solving themselves. Having the perspective of a man & woman is also helpful bc the approach is so thoughtful & directions are seamless. Thanks a lot! Ive had this thought myself after seeing some cool rolls of cane on Amazon- now I know it takes a bit of preparation & more materials, but I can’t wait to try myself!

If anyone sees this, I hope I can save you a headache. Don’t do this diy. I did this and it looked amazing right after, but didn’t even last a year. It’s all coming off. Internet strikes again…

Excellent idea!! I’ve got a Billy bookcase that I use in my coastal home as a pantry in my kitchen. The light wood is great, but the glass doors means you see everything inside (it’s hard to hide the Oreos 😂). I’ve tried frosting the glass and other treatments, but this is what I would love to do! Don’t know if you’re still answering questions here, but I love the idea of soaking and ironing the cane. I’m worried I won’t be as precise as you and wondering if you did try soaking, ironing and letting it dry before cutting with any success?

🤔 Curious as to why you didn’t just soak the cane in its original size, let it dry on its own and then cut it to size. Putting some weight or tension on it as it dried would get out those waves. Just thinking 💭

Even though you now know you made a mistake earlier but what you should have just done is thought of not trimming it off. You should have just stapled it and let it dry up and then cut off the excess...even though you didn't know that it shrunk 😊

How long did you soak your cane? I soaked in warm water for 45 minutes for a 32" x 13.5" piece and there was no noticeable swelling/stretching difference. *Maybe* 2mm if I'm being generous. Curious.
@TheNavagePatch
@TheNavagePatch Год назад
Not long at all - just pressed it between a damp towel in the end. I didn't want too much expansion for this project - just enough to tighten the weave when dry.

Tacking the molding so that it holds the cane in place, & stapling the cane or molding into the back of door or underside of glass frame/housing, in addition to some wood glue, will possibly last longer. The trade off is that upon close inspection it may have some space between glass & cane, or won’t look perfectly wrapped like professionals do... but it’s an ikea hack… & the idea is to get the look of the design/detail without the price or effort. But anything I put time and money into, I want to hold up… and I’m not sure this will hold up using glue alone. IMO… one should Atleast add some nails or tacks afterwards.🤷‍♀️

What would happen if I didn’t soak it and just cut and glued on my wood door?
@lauriee5200
@lauriee5200 9 месяцев назад
It wouldn’t have that tightly stretched look..might have an uneven surface…that’s my best guess…

How do you cut the border molding at the correct angle so that they fit together?

3m spray glue on the back would adhere to the glass...no problem.
