When I first did these in 2002,the recipe called for quite a bit of pearlite. This made the finished birdbath much lighter than sand with the Portland. I put them in the shed in the winter, it’s pretty cold in Pa. . So far they’re holding up well.
i'm only 3 minutes into this and i love you both already! what a great team you both make! Thanks, i'm gonna do this with my granddaughter when she gets a little bit older. she's 3 now so soon, though!
Y'all are so adorable! Love your bird bath. Thinking I will try this with our 9 yr old grandson!!! Never too early to get them interested in beautifying his surroundings.
Great video, but you should consider wearing a dust mask at the very least when handling/mixing concrete. Concrete contains silica dust. Inhaling silica dust can cause hardening of the lungs known as silicosis. Which is a dangerous chronic health problem.
This video was very inspiring. They look great! Interested to see how you paint the smaller ones. Beautiful memories to have with your Nan. Hi to Nan 🖐️
I love this video! This young man is SOOO precious and respectful he will get far in life! I actually used to follow Helen from Georgia and saw her make this bird bath! I also do projects with my granddaughters! We each wrote a book this summer son far! I’m going to send this video to see if they want to do this! Thank you!
Uk here. I don't know if wecangrow Elephants Ear here. We get deer here , a very big herd, they only eat a few plants. Lovely watching you both working together.
Great idea! Like how you hold it up to the camera to see it better also the tips and details really help. Yall make a great team! Those turned out beautifully! Enjoyed watching! Thanks for sharing!😊👍
Just yesterday I watched a video and was amazed at the plate in the shape of a leaf used to serve the food at the end of the video. It looks amazing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x86Jv1P7J-s.html Thank you for sharing! I like your self-confidence ;)
This is so great! Wonderful video. Very inspired to try a version for the climate here in Eastern Canada, I think I will have to use a pre-mixed "crack resistant" concrete blend and some metal reinforcement mesh to ward off expansion and contraction from the temperature fluctuations!
I've seen the tutorial of Mam Helen Wyatt too. You guys did a good job. If I may make a suggestion you can cover the sand with a plastic sheet prior to putting the leaf on so that any stray cement mixture won't come into contact with the sand. Also if you want it to be stronger, you can sandwich wire screen/ mesh within the cement to help prevent it from cracking. 😊
I just looked on Etsy and these types of bird bath's are going for from $100 to $180 USD...somehow most of these includes shipping...which I can't believe is affordable BUT there this would be a good side hustle on top of usual work.
I wonder if wire mesh would help strengthen the cement? Also, mounting the different sized leaves on each other or on a stock, requires some protruding mounting wire or rods for that process? How beautiful that is. Yes, I saw the Georgian woman doe this craft too.
What paint do you use that is safe for birds. I watched Helen paint hers too but she didn’t say what type of paint to use. I’m in az. Not sure what leaves I can find here to use lol.
Good job you guys! I love it & maybe someday after viewing your video many times I may try to make one. I love the big ones & they add a lot to a garden. 17:32
What a sweet video. At about 14:40/14:41 -- my husband and I both noted your Gran's facial expression change when you mentioned you were going home. Her heartache was palpable. It brought tears to our eyes, and each time I re-watch the video I tear up again at that point! I used to do all sorts of projects with my granddaughter until Covid stole three years from us. Now, sadly, she's at the age where she wants to be with her friends, and map distance has now separated us also. I love this video. Keep contact with her Reid! She cherishes these times.
Beautiful bird bath. You really should wear a mask and safety goggles while mixing the dry cement and the sand and also when adding the water. Cement is caustic and the dust can damage your lungs and eyes. Wet cement can cause burns to your skin and this is why you wear gloves. If you lay a big sheet of plastic over the sand then lay the leaf on the plastic it will make it so the sand isn't in contact with the cement, leaving you with cleaner edges.
I love this! I don’t have that plant, but one of my neighbors does and I’m going to ask them for a leaf. I love bird baths and I love making my own different types so thank you for sharing.
What a wonderful grandson! I have made these before using a weed called Common Burdock that has a similar leaf to yours and Quikrete. Yours turned out very beautiful! ❤😊
What a wonderful idea!!! I have been using just some plain terracotta pot bottoms for our bird baths. The birds love them but it would be nice to have something far prettier like this!! It would be a fun project for the family too!! Thank you for sharing!! ❤
Excelente trabajo, les recomiendo hacer una estructura con alambres atados, que colocaràn entre dos capas de cemento eso avitará que se parta o se cuartee, saludos,🇦🇷
