This video is awesome! Event that it's sponsored and it's an ad - I would definitely watch more ads like that! The amount of work you put in it is big, both constructing the pump and making this video. It was a real pleasure to watch it, especially the part where you described all the steps while showing them in short video shots. I watched that part twice - it was that good. I bet you learned a lot from your little experiment. Try running your system with your black sump full to the top increasing pressure on pump inlet. Your not getting real cavitation, but dissolved oxygen is coming out of solution and extra height may help give you more NPSH. Great video, keep them coming!

something something balance impeller Also 12:50 cavitation is when the dyanmic pressure is less than (flashing) then greater than (bubble collapse, micro water hammer) the vapor pressure of the liquid. In fact, in some rare cases, air can be injected to reduce the effects of cavitation because it keeps the vapors from collapsing. Overall fantastic video!
@flixerstudios1862
@flixerstudios1862 Год назад
Cavitation is something else than air bubbles. Cavitation occurs when the pressure goes below the vapor pressure of the liquid. The fluid then basically starts boiling creating small bubbles that collapse on impact. It's the cause of pitting.

@@EngineeringMindset Thanks for the reply! I'll keep that in mind. As a side note, I think it would be awesome if you did a future video on DIY shaft seals, testing various different methods to see which one works the best. Because when it comes to DIY seals, shafts seals are pretty much the holy grail of sealing techniques, right?

Can you make video on positive voltage vs negative voltage? How you can connect two 9 volts batteries for example in series and have +9 volts DC on positive terminal and -9 volts DC on negative terminal with middle terminal serving as common/virtual ground. What are the uses of negative voltage? Can you power a LED or 9 volts motor by connecting to -9 volts terminal and virtual ground terminal? Also since voltage is pressure, does negative voltage mean lower pressure and positive voltage mean higher pressure?

Obviously you enjoy building these sorts of things, but perhaps a more economical way is just buy a water pump for an old chevy 350 engine. Hook up electric motor to the pulley. The pumps can be had for like 15 dollars or whatever a junk yard might have. What I'm slightly more interested in is how the cooling works. Would there be an efficient way of making such a system work in a typical house?

Maybe a stupid question but.. What is the purpose of bearings? I know bearings are used a lot, and I know it usually involves something spinning - but I don't quite know the precise use for them. Maybe I'll find out in the rest of this video, in which case I'll delete this comment.. Love the videos!!
@EngineeringMindset
@EngineeringMindset 4 года назад
They allow low friction rotation of for example a shaft. That allows it to spin faster with less input power. Otherwise it would rub against the case causing friction and heating which will waste lots of input energy as well as wearing the shaft out very quickly.

12:37 I may be wrong but i don't think that can be called cavitation, i don't think the design is efficient or powerful enough to producer such low pressure to make water boil, at the very least not enough to produce any damage to become a problem, they are just bubbles sucked in through gaps and air dragged by the aerated water.
@EngineeringMindset
@EngineeringMindset 4 года назад
Yeah it's not true cavitation and isn't causing harm to the pump, but the bubbles reduce the performance quite significantly
