Your right the acrylic sheet does sell that it’s a real instrument but you know what else? LED - drill a small hole or modify your design and attach an LED for those early morning / night flights! Great video - subscribed!

Thanks for the tip! I'm working out details of my simulator's backlighting capabilities, but this is something I really want to do! I'm thinking white dimmable LED strips would fit nicely into the sim. Welcome aboard!

Your projects (and the Warthog project) makes me want to make a flight sim cockpit... even though i don't fly. :D I am using similar techniques to make an Apollo 11 DSKY though... :D I love how low-tech it all is, but when it comes together, it looks just like the "real thing". :D
@yorgle
@yorgle Год назад
Also, you should get a black paint marker to use instead of the sharpie... it'll have a much denser black.
@CaptainBobSim

Go for it! I find it's really fun, even though like you I don't really fly 🙃
@CaptainBobSim

I ended up using a printed decal and that gave a much better look. A lot of it also is the bed finish the printer gives you.
@yorgle
@yorgle Год назад
one trick i heard, which i haven't figured out how to do yet is to print blacks with full CMYK rather than just K, and it will come out more dense on the paper..

@@CaptainBobSim VSI is the next step before the complexity of say the dual arms of the altimeter. You are so creative, the sky is not the limit for you, way beyond. Perhaps your 3D printed case design can accommodate all six core instruments, with tweaks for knobs where needed. Did you try the parking brake print I sent you?

Hi Captain Bob thanks for another smart video sharing , I know already you did this for Microsoft, you forgot to bring it up, because there are still some x-plane users like me out there, dose this work on x-plane? Thanks so much 😊👍
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim 2 года назад
Good call! X-Plane usually plays nicer with SimVim, but you can use it with MobiFlight using my general X-Plane video, and use XPUIPC offsets instead of FSUIPC offsets (usually they are the same code/numbers)

Very nice collection of instruments you've put together! I've printed the 28BYJ-48 version (since I have several laying around), and I'm trying to figure out what you used to join the needle to the pulley - any hints?
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim 7 месяцев назад
Hi Chris! What do you mean by pulley? I did use some super glue to attach the gear to the knob.
@ChrisHobbs42
@ChrisHobbs42 6 месяцев назад
@@CaptainBobSim I've tried a couple of times to reply, and not seeing it show up, so maybe including a link is a no-no. In any event, the pully is in your github (Section 2 - Component Library and Structure/2-5 Instruments/6-PACK_Airspeed Indicator/28BYJ Stepper Version) as "Back Plate Stepper 28BYJ-48 Pully.stl" That's the piece I'm referring to. Looks like maybe there's supposed to be a metal rod or something that interfaces between the needle and the pully, but it's not shown in the fusion file. I just had some X27s show up, so the question may be moot, but I do like the idea of not having the screws coming through from the front of the instrument with the 28BYJ.
@npbosch

Very nice design. What stepper motor do you use ? In the attitude indicator and the altimeter it is a 28BYJ-48. Bit this one looks different.

I’m new to this channel so forgive me if question been raised before. So I’m wondering if the gauges your making can be tied to one arduino. Or do you connect them in some sort of tandem- config later on? That then connect to a usb port towards your pc. Thanks for this great video. 👍🙏👏

Yep! I'm connecting about 6 instruments per arduino and I use the arduinos for swtiches too

🤔 Is there any reason to use a driver if we can just connect it straight to an arduino?
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim 9 месяцев назад
Just for fun! These are small enough that the signal pins can provide enough power to move the shaft of the motor. The drivers also have built in diodes which mine does not have.

How many gauges can you run off an Arduino?
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim Год назад
Hello! It's 10 servos 10 steppers for an Arduino Mega. The amount of gauges depends on what electronics you use

Hi there Bob. I have built your Altimeter from 2 years ago using the 28BYJ-48 stepper but have found they tend to get hot and after some use they don't always work correctly. Is it possible to convert from the 28BYJ to the X27 you are using here. Has any one done this?
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim 2 года назад
Ian! It's great to see you again, I haven't made an x27 version yet, but hearing your experience I'm more tempted to go this route.
@ianmessenger7895
@ianmessenger7895 2 года назад
Thanks Bob. I have heard that the X27 will only drive a single needle successfully is this correct do you know. Am thinking of trying to convert your Altimeter design from 2 years ago but dont want to buy X27's if they wont do the job as the altimeter has like 3 sets of gears. what are your thoughts?
@CaptainBobSim
@CaptainBobSim 2 года назад
The x27 is very weak, so it would need to be a specially designed system. I know there's a concentric two needle version. I think it'd need to be modified though.
