DIY cleaning products and my cleaning routine

Today I am sharing some DIY cleaning products and my cleaning routine. I am loving the cleaning buzz that is going on at the moment. Nothing beats a good scrub and having your house in order. However, I am not loving all of the chemical products that we have gotten into the habit of using. The cleaning aisle used to be my fave place in the supermarket and I couldn't resist a new cleaning product. Lately, I have become more conscious of the number of chemicals I am using, it can't be healthy breathing in these harsh chemicals and I also have to think of my pets too. I have decided to ditch the cleaning aisle in favour of making my own products. They are cheaper, better for your health and kinder to the environment. Instead of having a cupboard full of cleaning products I now only have a small caddy full. I think if we all made some small changes it would make a massive impact on the environment and our health.

Your house stays so clean and tidy because there is no men to mess it up!! Especially the bathroom!! I use bicarb and vinegar a lot. Mix cream of tartar, salt and vinegar for a great drain cleaner. Love your videos and your instagram makes me laugh every day!!

For laundry, you can try soap nuts. I started using it half year ago, they are some nut shell looking thingy, you just need 4-5 in a little bag, and put it in the laundry, the clothes come out clean and soft, I usually add Some essential oil in. The soap nuts can be reuse for 2-3times, the the nuts can go into compost bins, very environmental friendly , and very cheap too, £10 for few hundred washes xxx

I have been wanting to reduce plastic in my home and wanted the glass spray bottles. Glass spray bottles with sprayer empty can be $10.00 to $12.00 in the US. I have discovered that I can use the sprayer part from my plastic bottles, thoroughly cleaned and trimmed, will fit on glass bottles of vinegar. Yay me reduce plastic and get cheap vinegar and glass bottle.

Thank you for telling everyone about essential oils and cats not mixing well. There has actually been deaths involved. So many people don't realize this. Thank you again for helping in getting the word out! Also, there are warnings out now about essential oils and babies. Please, everyone, be careful.

Hi Catherine ! Some good cleaning solution ideas I do use a vinegar dish soap and water solution for my floors and countertops.i still use some stronger cleaners in my bathrooms. When cleaning my toilets I always use paper towels or a separate rag that's used only on the toilets because of all yucky germs that are on are toilets. My cleaning schedule is a lot like yours ! When I was first married, and for years after, I loved all of the cleaning products when I would go grocery shopping. I had it all lol But now, many years later, I make my own. I use Dawn dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and a little water. I put this solution in IKEA spray bottles. It cleans, isn't bubbly because of the alcohol, disinfects, and smells great. I use it on everything from dishes to cleaning my home top to bottom. I really enjoyed this video tfs xox

I use a steam cleaner for floors. The heat sterilizes and helps the surface dry quickly. I love being able to do this using only water. And I LOVE Castile soap. I admit in my "hippie" days I used it to wash my hair, but I haven't for a very long time and I don't personally recommend it. I really enjoy your cleaning tips! Thank you!

Hi Catherine the natural products that we use for cleaning is vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and essential oils. In the washing machine for the softener I use white vinegar with some essential oils it makes your clothes soft and it eliminates buying a softener.

I really enjoyed this video, it was lovely finding a youtuber I already follow going greener :) I also clean with vinegar and I've just found out about infusing it to make it smell better! You put herbs or citrus peels in a jar (I'm doing lemon peel and rosemary sprigs), fill the jar with vinegar and leave in a dark place for 14 days. Then you strain the mixture, dilute vinegar as normal for cleaning and it should smell great! Hope this helps x

Your home is immaculate Catherine. My home is very dusty all the time as I use coal fires and live in th country where lots of muck gets walked in but like you I try to keep on top of it. It takes me a long time as I have big rooms and high ceilings and lots of trinkets and treasurers. Must try the castile soap always meant to but never got around to it. I use a steam cleaner in my home and if you have pets it's a great safe way to clean. We mop our floors with it and clean our outside and inside windows with it which I was doing today. My steam cleaner is a vaporetto and is a very useful tool. Also use vinegar to clean my washing machine inside I just run an emtpy cycle with vinegar where the powder goes it really works and leaves no vinegar smell. Thanks for sharing your Beautiful home with us your videos are the highlight of my week and always inspire me as I have fibromyalgia and have bads days but seeing you and your lovely home spurs me on to get through and upkeep my wee Shabby Chic cottage xo ❤️

Love your tips and your video's . I have just started making my own too. I already make and sell my natural skin care. My tip to you is to use different coloured cloths for cleaning. Blue for the loo. Pink for the sink. Green for glass. Sometimes yellow for polishing. I get my cloths from b&m store and they are micro fibre and the blue and pink have net on the back for scrubbing. Very cheap. Tracy xx

Hello Catherine you're absolutely right Castile soap is made with sodium hydroxide and olive oil so it's very vegetable based. This might work also if you make homemade soap like I do. I also make my cleaner like you I use water vinegar a little bit of lemon oil a little bit of orange oil and a little dribble of like just a few drops of dish soap and you can use it on mirrors wood spots on the floor anyting. I love your bottles though they're so cute minor just from a dollar store and it's really ugly. I will have to adopt your pretty ways that you have! I have been making my own laundry soap for many years. I shred and chop up bars of soap such as Castile soap in bar form. You can shred it and chop it up yourself with hand tools. I wasn't using my mini food processor so I have dedicated it to the making of cleaning products. I store in the laundry area so that it doesn't get used by anyone in the kitchen. I mix equal parts shredded and chopped Castile soap or a specialized laundry soap such as Fels-Naptha with washing soda and borax. I understand in Europe borax is very difficult to find and I have read others who use two parts washing soda to the shredded up bars of soap. I leave it in powder form and use 2 tablespoons for regular load and if it's a high-efficiency you use one tablespoon. Personally I prefer to use some OxiClean when I have things that are stained. So I don't mix the OxiClean into the powder laundry soap. when I have something that is white and stained I will spray it with hydrogen peroxide. I know there are a lot of recipes that use a liquid version of what I just described but I find the powder is easier to store and it works really well. I have a small jar with a cover on it that I just put some water in the tablespoon or two of the soap Shake It Up and pour it into the bottom of my washing machine. I don't use a high-efficiency washing machines that has the rubber gasket. So sometimes I add vinegar to the rinse instead of a fabric softener. But I understand you shouldn't use the vinegar if you have the Rubber seal because it can wear down the seal. I only use the vinegar as a rinse agent on clothes that might get a little staticky like skirts or dress pants. Most of the time I don't use vinegar in the rinse. I thought I would mention that I take the same all purpose cleaner that you're using with the soap. I add vinegar and a little rubbing alcohol and that is what I use on my kitchen counters because I feel it sterilizes it a little more. in the bathroom I will use a little hydrogen peroxide around the toilet because it kills viruses including the Norovirus. It's very important that you keep hydrogen peroxide in a light proof container because light will actually affect the hydrogen peroxide while it's being stored. I just found a spray nozzle that fit the hydrogen peroxide bottle. I clean my keyboard and monitor and so forth with a little rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth and that does a good job of cleaning without getting things wet and damaged. Personally I use the rubbing alcohol right from the bottle on the microfiber cloth because I'm really concerned about getting any water on my electronics. I use the baking soda as an abrasive to scrub my sink. But I will also make a paste of baking soda in a pan that has burnt on food or to clean my oven and I make the paste just with water. soaking a pan with a little bit of baking soda and water will get burnt out messes cleaned up easy. I don't really care for the liquid Castile soap I find it it leaves a film. So when it comes to liquid soap I use dye free clear unscented dishwashing or washing up liquid. When I try to use dr. Bronner's Soap on my dishes I noticed a film that developed in time especially on glassware and silverware.

Great video! I'm addicted to bleach as a cleaner. I rarely dilute and when I use it to clean, by the time I'm done, I feel like I drank a cup. So, I need a change. I tried 'green' cleaners b4, but I wasn't convinced that they killed bacteria and germs. I'm slightly germophobic so I definitely need the assurance that what I'm using is sanitizing.

I stopped using most commercial cleaners a few years ago; I do use a commercial tub cleaner for hard water and commercial toilet bowl cleaner for lime/scale. I find a microfiber rag and my homemade cleaners do a fab job. I didn't like the vinegar smell at all, but I adjusted b/c it dissipates quickly. I don't even notice it now. I'll discourage you from making homemade laundry soap. I did, and at first it was great. I loved it and it was super cheap. But not having any surfactants in the mixture, my clothes, over time, got dingy. There may be a fix for this but I haven't come across one. It's nothing to do with hard water either. Stuff gets trapped in your clothes, b/c there is nothing to break the surface tension: stuff like grease and dirt. Surfactants make water wetter.. So the savings isn't any savings in the long run if it ruins your clothes. btw: I loved you lavender microfiber cloth. I haven't found any here in pastels. I usually but the big packs in the auto car washing dept at the store. I have yellow, orange, blue, white, lime green and dark blue. Some I had to retire. Microfiber ruined me. I cannot clean with a regular cloth. It has to be microfiber.

I'm no cleaning queen, but you are quite right, it doesn't take much effort. I have a son, a cat, two doves and two finches. Birds are especially sensitive to chemicals and can die. Laundry/surface stain removers... Peroxide: blood stains. Vinegar: some grease stains and the others ones. Vinegar with news paper works wonder on all glazing. Just be careful of the contour of the windows to avoid black marks. Shower/bath: in a 3M dishwand 1/2 vinegar 1/2 Dawn dish soap. I do it after my shower, no more heavy scrubbing. Rubbing alcohol: all vegetal stains, fruits juices splash, crayon, some ink and permanent marker if done immediately. To deodorize I put 1/2-1/2 alcohol with orange blossom water or rose water. This was a trial. It doesn't linger much but freshens up the air after cleaning or cooking.

I agree. The cleaning craze it great and has seemed to motivate a lot of people but the chemical products seem to be worrying me more and more. I have decided to use up the products I have now and either buy something like Method or Mrs Meyers or simply bite the bullet and attempt to make my own like you have. Thanks for taking the time to show us how you make your own cleaning products. A really well timed and relevant video for me 🙋

@@DaintyDiaries on Amazon you can also get a pack from a company called Alkimi. They are non toxic also so that's another option x

Mrs Meyers isn't as eco friendly as it makes out and isn't non toxic! The brand had a very good marketing team behind it and they apparently based the packaging on Dr Bronner's Castile Soap because people associate the look with a natural brand. It's really disappointing!

I've been using homemade cleaners for over a year now as the shop bought stuff was making me feel really unwell. It's brilliant.

Henry rage 😂 I so know that feeling but I would never trade Henry for any other Hoover, I have how ever purchased a cheap stick hoover that I use in between the deep hoovering I do with Henry. 🤗

Those amber glass spray bottles are gorgeous catherine. Way nicer than the old recycled shop bought cleaner empties I use. A couple og extra little things I do as well is I have a squeegy I use before I step out of the shower and I wipe down the tiles and shoeer doors with it. Takes a second and meand way less cleaning is needed. If you put some orange peels into a vinegar botyle for about 3 weeks infuses the oils into the vinegar to make it even more powerful for cutting through grease gir the cooker and things like that. In my oven I sprinkle baking soda then spray it with vinegar and leave it sitting for a while to do its job. In america they can get amonia and isopropyl slcohol and borax which gives them much better ranges of cleaners to diy. They were impossible to get in ireland but they seem to be gradualky making an sppearance again. Ive found listings of a few places that say thwy ship to ireland so they must be allowing them in the ciuntry again. I think a couple of the items were on a ban list from the old troubles . I agree with you about making our homes less toxic where possible. We are bombarded with toxins when you think about it. Xx

Thankyou Catherine, I've always cleaned as I go, and everywhere naturally stays tidy and clean. It's pet hairs that are my bug bare. 3 cats and a dog. 😂 Feel like my hoover is always on.. I have to drag my hoover around and have the same problems 😂 I'm going to try those solutions, anything that turns milky colour when added to water is also harmful to cats, zoflora is one of them. Xx

Like watching your videos. Really cute apartment. If you need a funnel, you can cut a plastic bottle and turn it over and you have a funnel.

One of my favorite diy cleaners is for a laundry pretreat spray. Mix 1 part regular dishwashing soap, 1 part ammonia and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle before each use. Saturate the stain and let sit for 30 minutes and launder as usual. This is excellent for all kinds of stains including pet stains for items that can be laundered.

Liked your video today. I have changed the cleaning chemicals I use in my house. I started using Method lavender plant based cleaner...smells wonderful. I still use the old basic vinegar.
