A budget solution to add a bit of colored lighting with color light gels, by using cheap DIY colored cellophane gels and making a frame so that they can be easily attached to a clamp light.

Thanks 👍 I want to use gels. I thought of the same thing as you. I wasn't sure if it was safe because of heat from light. I guess it's okay then. Thanks for the confirmation.

A professional pack of gels is only $25-30. Doing this type of crap with the cellophane is way more annoying than it is worth for saving a few bucks. This solution is really just for people that are so poor they can barely afford a meal and if that is the case how do you even have a light in the first place.

That's a fantastic tip. We used CTB a ton for moonlight, but don't do what we did...you need to diffuse it too or it'll be too harsh in camera. I've also used CTO to mimic street lights, which I wouldn't advise diffusion on that use case. Your tip sounds perfect for our GVM LEDs as even Roscoe gels melt on Lowel Totas and definitely, 1k Arris.

Nice follow up on this DIY gel hack. I like that you customized your filter holder. Yes these DIY gels YCImaging recommended are a money saver and it gets that color look. Yes it's not the actual precise heat resistant gels material, but the end result gives a professional finish. I use these this same gel hack for my Kino-Flow lighting system. These work well with LED panels, CFL light bulbs, and fluorescent lights. Tungsten will burn these paper thin gels up so don't use this hack on Tungsten light system. Just as your recommendation, I found that when you double or triple the color layer you get a stronger color tone. A, you can't go wrong with this look plus it's $5 for a roll of this paper. That's like snack money. At least for me. Salute to you bruh, good review and test on hacking this joint.

Thank you NFT for re-igniting a great lighting idea! USERS (photographers, designers) should know that cutting costs and using a ultra light cellophane is a GREAT IDEA. However, it is VERY likely that if this material is used with anything and close to another than a 'cool' light (think LED bulb or strips), they can melt. It's a killer way to cover fluorescent lighting too! Ambient lighting easy. I'm using it to cover and/or line the fluorescent ceiling fixtures in the bathrooms of a converted radiator shop I DJ/host dance parties in monthly. Yahooo! I used the heavy weight gels professionally in the 80's and 90's when DJ'ing in clubs and they are efficient when used properly.

I tried this and while it looks great in person i'm finding that my cameras are seeing the colors wrong, even if i adjust the white balance. It'll see purple as blue and red as orange. Two different camera brands also so it's not a color science issue. Any advice would be appreciated!
@NatesFilmTutorials
@NatesFilmTutorials 3 года назад
Set your cameras white balance to the light source, for instance if your light is 5600K then manually set your white balance to 5600K and see if that works.
@DJ-hu4ih
@DJ-hu4ih 3 года назад
@@NatesFilmTutorials I have tried this but alas no help! The orangey looking red i think will be salvageable with a hue adjustment in post however the purple is wayyyyy off haha! I'm using a 5600K COB and the purple is closest to purple at 10,000k in camera, but still nowhere near as purple as it looks in person! I bought 5 colors though and 3 out of 5 look great though so I can't complain, especially when it's so cheap! Just wondered if anyone does happen to have a quick fix :)
@NatesFilmTutorials
@NatesFilmTutorials 3 года назад
Have you tried using multiple layers to get a more saturation?
@DJ-hu4ih
@DJ-hu4ih 3 года назад
@@NatesFilmTutorials totally! i've got a vertical sheet that's either 3 or 4 layers (can't remember which) and taped the edges together. I'll use that or i'll fold it in half and clamp to the light's reflector if i want more saturation so it's up to 7 or 8 layers realistically, should be more than enough! It does look nice and saturated, it's just in camera the hue is off despite the WB being correct. Strange one! Thanks for trying to help nonetheless :)
