I have made a lot of concrete planters and this time I wanted to experiment with making reusable molds. This segmented concrete planters are made out of Quikrete 5000 concrete mix which comes pre mixed in 80lbs bags and all you have to do is add water. I made one mold out of left over PVC 1-1/4” PVC pipe screwed to a piece of vinyl floor mat. The concrete hexagon planter was made out of pieces of PVC trim board ¾” thick and 5-1/2” wide. I used hinges to connect the boards. The insides of the concrete planters are made from mixing buckets and plastic bottles.

Oh, I love this project! (I know I say that every time). I especially like the face of the planter that mimic the surface of the a barrel cactus. Very artistic. I also appreciate the reusable practice. Thanks.

I've recently gotten interested in casting concrete, and although there's some great molds to purchase, I've ALWAYS been interested in homemade, reusable supplies! This is a GREAT tutorial with equally great results -- in particular, I love the look of the segmented planter! Thank you so much for the step-by-step instructions AND explanation of the supplies you use. That's a huge help! Cheers, and blessings from Eagle Rock, CA!

try oiling the inside bottles/buckets on their outsides (the sides that come in contact with the concrete) to allow for easy releasing

I like how the one made with the pipes mimics the ridges on the cactus! Oh, I'm not sure if this applies to all types of cement, but I read that you have to neutralize it for the plants? I guess unless the plant prefers alkaline soil. I could be wrong but just thought I'd let you know.

By holding an oscillating tool or a pad sander against the mold after pouring, to vibrate the concrete, you would achieve a better finish to the concrete.

The pipe one looks great, like a Greek brutalist crossover. Have looked into foamed pvc that they use for sign making? It is great material and you can bend it and heatform it easily. Should work well for reusable molds.

Feels weird commenting a year later but I have my doubts about trying foam. Concrete can become quite warm as it sets since the process is an exothermic reaction. I suspect over time the PVC foam would warp, shrink or crack as a result of the heat.

I wonder if a vibrator (not that kind) would help these come out a bit smoother. Place the bottom board on some rubber pads and set up a simple electric motor with an unbalanced bit on the drive shaft, attached anywhere on the board. Run it while you pour the concrete and then stop so the concrete can dry. Just an idea. I've seen long drill type ones for pouring house foundations.

THIS IS PERFECT!! Do you think it would work to scale up the PVC one using a 55 gallon drum and like...3-4 inch pipes? I want to make really big planters like the ones you see in malls that are like 4 feet tall and plant trees in them. I would make them baseless and sink the whole thing 6" or so into the ground to allow the tree's roots to grow where they want... am I crazy? Maybe.
